Hi Guys,

Sorry for this late response.

My Devices are connected separately as below. There's 2 different DEL lines, 1 for MIO TV and 1 for MIO 15mb ADSL.

For MIO 15mb ADSL, setup is as below. No microfilter as line dedicated for ADSL :-

Wall jack - rj11 - C877 - rj45 - laptop

I am reluctunt to blame a router.. any router.. Router is only a dumb thingie that does what it is told to do - marshalling traffic. Therefore, look into your configuration.

If you say wired connection works fine and wireless has intermittent connectivity problems, chances are your router is either on the same channel and the same subnet as many other routers nearby (i.e if you have a Linksys router, it would be Channel 6 by default on /24 subnet (class C network)) or you are on the same channel that is being shared with home appliances like microwaves and cordless phones.

Log into to the router configuration page and change the wireless channel to something 'less crowded'.. There are utilities that would analyse wireless networks for you, but it is beyond the scope of this reply.. :)

Some routers support up to 14 channels, so you can start experimenting with channel 1 first. Select it and see whether your wireless is stable. If not, move to channel 2 and so on, until you achieve the desired result.

You should try avoiding channels 12-14 (supported in Europe (1-13) and Japan (1-14)) as your wireless card might have problems with it.

The next step is optional and you do not have to do it if your wireless network is secure.

Change your network IP range: from default 192.168.1.0 to, for example, 192.168.10.0. You can leave the subnet mask unchanged: 255.255.255.0. So, your router IP will be 192.168.10.1 if you wish to follow Linksys analogy... Save, reboot cable modem, reboot your router and then reboot your PC and reconnect to your wireless network.

I hope the above is of help.

Stay Secure on Windows Live Messenger

Anyone who has used MSN Messenger has occasionally and probably seen this behavior before: Your friend messages you with a short sentence telling you he has taken your photos, and asks you to click on the webbie links to visit. He then logs out after 1 second without explanation.

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7406/ruthblog8.jpg

This is actually not your friend. It's the work of either a hacker or a virus that has infected your friend's computer.

Trip Zao of the Unofficial Windows Blog writes in his blog the steps that you can take to keep yourself safe, and be in the know on such behavior.

I've created a new thread to consolidate anything related to:

- Connecting to and surfing the internet

- Broadband issues that you want to discuss about (i.e.Singtel, Starhub, M1.

- LAN network...how to connect

- Wireless questions.

Feel free to ask...again, don't be afraid to ask anything, even if your question seems simple.

My home internet is currently shared through Cat 5e cables between 3 PCs in different rooms.

Am thinking of cleaning up the wiring and use a different set up.

Not comfortable with wireless unless absolutely necessary.

Was looking at using Aztech Powerline Networking.

Anyone have been using this type of network at home?

1. Any degrading of performance as compared to Cat5e/6 cable network?

2. How is the security? Not sure how so many adaptors can identify each other, paired up and still be secured.

** If the internet signal is transmitting through the adaptors and powerline, can others in my block be connected to my network if they are using similar powerline adaptors?

Can someone share experiences about powerline networking and whether it can be safely used?

Thanks.

Apparently, this owner of the wireless network seemed ticked off by her sister:

Hi people, i am currently considering whether to sign on for the m1/starhub fibre optic broadband(50/100mbps). Anyone has any experiences with these operator's fibre broadband?

I am also thinking of getting a 3rd party router/modem that will enhance my gaming experience. Is it necessary to do so? or the one that come with the fibre broadband will be good enough to do so? Do give me any comment or suggestion that you think will help.

First of all if you are the one footing the bill and can afford it then by all means go ahead and try.

I mean, if I'm encounter problems with my current connections like always being disconnected, I would then consider changing. If not, no point wasting money on the extra speed yet unable to utilize it.

But then, at this present stage, is it stable? I scare even more problem and stuck with a high cost bill. The cheapest I heard is $50 plus per month for Singtel.

Yes, i am the one paying for the bill... But the problem is, i am currently paying 30+ per month for my 6mbps singnet broadband and with a bit more, i can get myself a 50mbps and above.

Mine was not really there yet... Lag sometime when playing online game, cant even host a game. M1 is having a promotion of 100mbps @ $39 only...

I don't know about you guys but this is what i believe in.

Fibre optics is like a very very wide expressway. But if your carpark entrance (your equipment) and other people's carpark entrance (other PCs, websites and servers) only allow ONE car to pass through at a time, then i don't really see a point in widening up the expressway at all. Might as well just leave it to a normal lane expressway.

Network pros please shed light on this. Haha.

If all the connection is local you will see a difference but if the players or server is hosted overseas then good luck as the "speed" is only for the local connection if you want to know more about this pls check out hardware zone forum for more details.

How fast is fast? I need you to explain me the benefits for a family who does day to day internet surfing and PC gaming. My mum asked me to get it because everyone is getting it, but looking at the plans, its super expensive and i don't really see a need to improve the connection any further because of my understanding stated earlier.
