Seriously I envy you TS. My dad stopped giving me allowance when I turned 17, not that he can't afford I guess he just want me to learn to be independent the hard way.

Anyway, your dad has a reason on why he doesn't want to get you a car in the first place. Why don't you ask your dad about his opinion? Or perharps someone like an uncle?

Unless you already had and their response is the same as ohayo's.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.

Bro,

Just imagine this la. You will be looking to spend about $1K plus per month on your car, looking into things long term, do you think it is worth it. You know 1k can go holiday every month and may still have spare change (thailand, china, indo etc) and if you open a forced savings bank account (1k can become 12k by the end of the year)

My wife and I currently own a small suzuki swift 1.6, i think the monthly adds up to about 1.2-1.4k per month, this is not a weekend plate and we got this cheap in 2006 @$60k. We really use the car for work and my company pays for the petrol, parking etc. Our monthly income is just below 10k per month, we stay hdb, eat simple, live simple, with savings. In my early twenties, I made mistakes buying nice vehicles, I drove a WRX, had a few cars to boot, yes it was fun and everything but I really regret not thinking bigger for the future. Looking back if I could relive what I went through, I'd never have bought these cars, and would sit on a more sizable bank account.

Do you sums, I'm not saying don't buy but do your sums. I'm not the kind who would say don't wear a hat too big for your head or give you the "young man listen to me" kinda bs advice because people, including me, learn from experience.

Currently we pay (monthly)

$645 for installments

$170 for insurance + road tax per month

$90 for season parking

$400 give take for petrol per month

$50 odd arrears and quarterly servicing

Thats already in the 1.3K range.....

Cars are very much more expensive now than they were previously due to coe hence a picanto would cost the same as my swift sport I'd think. As a rough guide, I've heard a wise investment person tell me, make sure your transport spending budget per month is less than 20%, I think that makes wise sense.

I was a SAF regular for 6 years. I only bought my first car 2 years after I left the army while working in the civilian sector. I paid for my car and bike myself. Stopped taking a single cent from my parents since I was enlisted. At the age of 18 and getting enlisted into the army but you are still taking allowance from your father?! sorry to say but this was my first thought: "F*CK YOU USELESS SISSY BOY!!!" (pardon my expletives.)

Stand on your own feet. What's wrong with taking the public transport when you cannot afford a car or bike? There are so many people doing that right now during that phase of life and many people who're doing well now took that route many years down the memory lane. Considering the fact that public transport was a lot worse than now.

I have a good alternative for you if you are keen to pay installments. Go and buy the AIA achiever plan. It is a very good stagnant investment. You get appreciated value 10 years down the road. Of course it it more lucrative to go for Kayhian and DIY. But the risk is higher and you are left on your own. Look far and think ahead. Since you only drive your car during weekends means you don't need a car. Why waste the money on a depreciating liability.

Look far, you can potentially earn so much more by not signing on. If that's your intention, signing on to buy a car is plain stupid. Be your own safety net. Don't rely on your parents at this age. Otherwise you are no better than a useless bum.

Then he can use the balance from his allowance to mod the getz to make it pick up girls.

True. Gives the repoman some work too.

When the economy is on overdrive, SAF also need to fight with the rest in recruitment. Now they tangle up to $25,000 for poly grads to sign on as regular. When you are 18, that is an obscene amount of money.

Because you deserve to be scolded. Listen to those who went through it and seen people create their own destruction. Believe it or not, I know several guys like you and none of them are out of unnecessary debts. In his mid 20s having to borrow $50 petty cash and then dump the friendship for that $50... You are treading that way. Heed the blunt unappealing advises or seek your tempting doom. The choice is yours. None of us get a single cent for giving you sound advises.

Yes I know. I went through that too. But realised how unworthy it is. I took the plunge 6 years ago to leave the SAF and never looked back. The golden handshake comes anytime. When your contract is not renewed, you are going to be in deep scheisse. And I know people drawing half the pay they used to draw in the army. One of them was even reduced to debt laden lifestyle and he had live the life of a city nomad just to prevent the repo man from repossessing his Suzuki Swift. The last heard of him was his attempt to try and sell some MLM products in camp. He AWOL the following ICT.

The young ones gotta look far. Don't be tempted by the goodies before them. $25K can be earned in months. Why sacrifice several years for a few months of money?

hi thanks for ur reply . i did talk abt signing on as a mean to support my own car right? is when someone post and ask wat if spf/scdf/army dont wan me as a regular den i ask question abt it . please, im asking for suggestions not lecture from a unknown, get it into ur D head n read carefully before u talk.

funny when the inexperience trying to get tips from the experienced result into their smug-ness and think they have the right to scold people . dont be a cunt.. please..

LOLx, Xiao Di Di. You wanna buy. Then buy lo. Why bothered to ask for advice and then not happy being 'LECTURED'? Anyway i dont really care. Young boy, i have been in the community since 2005, touring with my bike. While you are still a 13 years old secondary 1 or 2. Doing skirt chasing at Xiao Mei Mei wearing school uniform.

Anyway............Most to most, few months down the road....

i will see a thread......'Help, Can someone COI my car for me' The content goes. Hi riders and fellow friends, i have been defaulted my car installment for few months now because my father stopped giving me allowance to support my car. I am not able to sign on as a regular to secure my job. Given my dire financial situation, my gf wants to leave me. As my car is still new, i am not able to sell my car yet. I need someone to top up cash to me and COI my car.

Anyway off record...........I can be a smug, be cunt and i can be S hole just to boast of my achievement to you. Because i can do full payment on my all Class 2 bikes and class 2b bikes without needing to post online asking for advice, ask my daddy and mummy for money, risk getting flaked and scold people if i dont like what i am reading. Well, CAN YOU?

Of course there are someone way better than me. I am just a small fly here. ^_^

There's a sucker born every minute... they say. I love to see ppl screw up their lives when they borrow to finance their lifestyle.

That's why loan sharks still thrive despite the clamp downs.
