regarding the blind spot checks and all that and lady drivers

my wife was a passenger on my bike before she started driving herself, and as she knows the feeling of being inside and outside of a cage, she makes it a point to check

and also she is very patient with other riders too

That is great. I think all the newbie drivers all have to go thru this course. i.e to be on a bike in at least 1 lesson. So that they will knw wat exactly is checking of blind spot for.

I'm still learning to ride and the instructor brought up the topic of dressing right. He said that many will not suit up properly for riding and that it's at the individual's own risk. I guess the shorts and flip flops is a result of the weather but I have to be honest and say that it looks totally unsafe and not to mention kinda uncomfortable. I would totally have a fear of my flip flops falling off or getting abrasions on my feet from changing gears. My mom drives and she refuses to wear flip flops when she's driving; she says it feels odd. But to each their own.

I personally don't go out in shorts and flip flops at all unless I'm heading to the beach. Heck, I wear jeans and boots here all year round with a synth leather jacket in my bag for the malls and cinema; FYI why are the cinemas in this country so darn cold? It's like watching a movie in a freezer. Anyway, like the instructor said, it's at the individual's own risk.

I'm still learning to ride but I know that I'll be in jeans, boots and T-shirts at the very least when I start riding out on the road for real.

actually it's easy to say that you will wear jeans and boots every time you ride now.

but when you actually start riding, you might have to ride every single day. imagine having to change into jeans even if you are taking a short trip at night to meet a friend for some kopi nearby.

anyway I still support gearing up every time we ride!

ride safe bros!

For me, it is easy. With the exception of going down to the corner store to pick up milk or whatnot, I always pull on jeans and shoes before I go out. It's what I'm comfortable in.

As for the gloves thing, I already bought a proper pair of riding gloves. The ones you can purchase at the center are NOT riding gloves. Exactly how do they protect your hands from cuts and bruises when you fall?!

it's just a minimum requirement i suppose. better than bare skin on the tarmac. don't think many people will shell out money for proper gloves, that's why got the $1 durian seller gloves. then again, the top speed in circuit is 30 km/h.

Things like improving safety for dispatch/delivery riders, could well be shouldered partly by their companies. Especially if it comes under Workplace Safety & Health regulations, company would be responsible for providing Personal Protective Equipment, or at the very least adopting internal regulations which make it compulsory for riders to wear basic protective gear like gloves and proper footwear.

Nice suggestion, Xavier

Until the advent of mandatory WSH for delivery riders, those of us in the management level should take up our own initiatives to boost riding safety awareness especially when we are still using the motorcycle as a daily vehicle to get to work and back. After all, we are the ones asking them to send urgent things around the island :)

So far I have had success teaching good maintenence practises to increase safety & reliability, and we all also wear Caterpillar boots as standard riding gear. They are durable, affordable, last for years and provide effective protection.

There are a lot of "live examples" why basic armour protection is good common sense while riding a bike but it's up to the individual to encourage "dressing for the fall" - not because riders are reckless and will eventually crash as famously presented by Top Gear (UK TV show), but because many motorcycle accidents are not the riders fault.

The media could have some part to play in creating public awareness of "bike = unsafe". After all, many or even all TP advertisements depict accident scenes or videos of riders dashing recklessly through traffic to end up with serious injury.

How about the case when riding up an MSCP and the stupid slippery painted floor causes accidental loss of control? THAT situation can be easily and more effectively used to teach the concept of "dress for the fall". It's a smart thing to do.

hey guys, i feel that the newspaper article is very well spot on. Let's be honest, we are prone to accidents but i believe bikers should atgatt to minimize injuries. Period.

However, this 'message of awareness' does not tally with the current practice of law enforcement personnels...and even driving schools! We all see traffic police offers on the road and i'm sure they'd rather use their own ff helmets and armored tops/bottoms. If they(the govt) are advocating safe riding habits, shouldn't they provide their men with proper gear?

And lets not get started with driving schools. Those white cotton (durian) gloves? For jesus/mohammed/krishna/yahweh/buddha's sake, come on!! Making change for the better all boils down to education, awareness & influence. Now how do we do that? The source of it, when they start learning class 2b. This can be achieved by enforcing rules like mandatory full faced helmets and other gears. The instructors themselves can be a great source of influence if they gear up properly too.

That is all and ride safe to every single one of you. :)

Right on.

The best place to spread the message of proper riding gears is at the schools.

Mandatory FF is probably overkill, as riding gear is a personal choice.

But they can do alot more with regards to educating the students on the benefits of proper gears.

We got enough crap coming from people who says FF and gears are too hot for Singapore.

99% of them probably never own a FF nor riding jacket/ boots...etc in the first place.

Cheers.

In the past perhaps personal armour and FFs didn't have effective ventilation and led to all these urban myths indirectly.

Been using FF and leathers for a year now thanks to rider reviews on SBF. Not hot at all once you get moving :)

The other day I did a 10 minute short hop from Portsdown to Merchant St. without the jacket and something definitely felt wrong moving at modern commuting speeds without protection...

Do u dress up for your ride to work bro?

I dress up to work as per my sig below; minus my armoured pants and boots, which are reserved specifically for touring.

But i wear jeans and my trusted Doc Marten boots to ride, cos thats my 'standard' attire anyway.

Almost everyday,i have my colleagues asking me if its hot wearing what i wear (FF helmet, gloves and mesh riding jacket).

Its warm yes, but if your riding under the afternoon sun waiting for the lights to turn green, your gonna sweat anyway, riding jacket or not.

So might as well 'sayang' your body abit and give it some protection.

When i first started riding, i thought that FF helmets and riding jackets were unnecessary and just to make the rider look cool. But after reading motorcycle safety articles that up to 35% of head injuries occur in the chin area, and seeing some of my rider friends having lost a tooth, i wised up and got myself a FF.

And ya, its kinda weird to see TP riders not geared up considering the fact that they are the ambassadors of road safety and they spend most of the job on the road. A FF helmet and perhaps a jacket wont be so hard to put on isnt it?

My everyday riding gear be it to work or go out is a FF (Flip-up, normal FF, graphics, no graphics...etc) :D, armoured riding jacket, armoured gloves and riding boots.

You will notice that those who question about the need of riding gears generally:

1. Knows nothing about it at all.

2. Always asks the same question of is it hot and such, but in the end they dun get it anyway.

3. Already got a dead fixed opinion that these are unnecessary and impractical. They are negative influence on all other riders in terms of safety gears.

Perhaps if they never really touched the tarmac before, they will not know.

Anyway, its a personal choice, I dont really give a damn as to whether they ride in full gear or ride in the nude. :)

Cheers!

Probably if you switch to mesh jackets, its better?

I think you will concur that on the move, its actually cooler with a jacket than without cos the mesh allows air to move in/out while blocking out most of the sun.

At the traffic lights, it's only like 30 secs-1 minute, and it does not feel hot at all given that the jacket and sleeves blocks out the sun.

Ya, after getting used to a jacket, it feels 'naked' to ride without one. :)

Sad as it may seem, it's true.

Even I am the same. I have all the pre-req touring gear.

FF, leather jacket, touring pants, boots, kidney belt.

And I've even tasted the tarmac.... many times... in my years of riding.

And yet today, I'm still riding to work in my office attire without jacket and most of the times, glove.

It's a personal choice I guess. I know that I will bleed, but yet I still ride w/o protection in the name of convenience and not sweating.

I know the risks, I accept the consequences.
