This kinda thing you just pay and you don't think about it. The more you think about it, the more stressed you will become and you may explode.

100-200 per month 4 a decent 2b depends on the downpayment or duration of loan. You could save up a decent amount to fully pay a bike + a years insurance say 2-3k.

how much for

road tax? $5-10 a month

Parking $15 hdb season parking + $5 for outside(assuming you're not working there full time) a month.

insurance? $600-1000 a year for a p plater.

avg petrol? 100-200 a month

maintenance? I'd set aside $500 to get things right. $1000 in stores to back it up.

long term riding? maybe some $ for private settlement.

did i miss anything? need to calculate if i got enuff $$ to support 1

to put it simply, like Hydher mentioned.. at least ard $400 a mth jux to keep d bike running.. on top of that and VERY VERY IMPORTANT! reserve at least $500-1000 in case anything cocks up on ur 2nd hand bike..

like me! my TA200 sui sui i take over, most of the wear n tear probs come in like timing chain.. n even things like starter relay.. used for 8 mths total got ard $700 alr in repair...

A ride a day, keeps the doctor away!

YEAH! Someone agreed with me!

Truthfully bro, the less you know, the better. For example, my bike is fully paid. But if i were to take into consideration the price i bought the damn thing for, including depreciation, my insurance over the years, petrol, consumables, repairs and other stuff like parking. Then i have to calculate the inflation rate over the years and mix all the annoying numbers, plus, minus, times, divide.

Before i knew it, i became so damn stressed that i exploded (boomz). My parents and gf told me not to think so much about it and just ride the damn thing.

Like i said, the less you know, the better.

I just bought a bike, and alot of my friends, even my close friends say things like I'm a fool for buying a bike at this price and that price. I came home and reflect on myself but my parents and family supported me and told me, that whatever it is. Don't think about it. Just think ahead and careful...

If you are still schooling and your school is near, just take public transport.

If your school is like on the other end of Singapore, get a second hand 2B bike. My advice is to get a bike which is cheap but reasonably reliable. If you can pay full cash, go for it. Can you imagine if your are rushing for a thesis paper but you have no time to go and pay your instalment?

Any kapcai or despatch street bike will do. You dont want to worry about installments one. You already have your petrol, servicing, insurance, road tax etc to worry about.

If you intend to ride for many years, travel a lot and keep the same bike, it will be cheaper than public transport. The catch here is that you're getting a small practical bike such as a kup.

Getting a 2nd hand is very right for you as ur still studying, however CHOOSING a 2nd hand is the prob bro. Please get someone expert and i mean someone REALLY good to follow u and buy. Dun later become chop carrot lolx, u'll have more headache paying for fixing here and there =/

I guess if I realli anyhow calculate..i easily cfm spent 400+ monthly on installment, fuel, summon fee -.- nb!~

My monthly operating cost is $150. This is for the barebone essentials: petrol, parking, ERP, insurance.

My bike servicing so far is very no frills, just change engine oil, oil filter, top up coolant. Abt $30 per servicing. Think on average, it's abt 3-4 times a year.

No loan repayments or interest, coz paid full cash.

Was curious to see how much it costs to run a bike vs public transport vs car. So I've got an excel sheet tracking bike operating cost and expenses thus far.

Fuel prices also play a part.... so just get a small bike if you're looking at saving costs and to be practical.

I was in your situation before.

Fully paid with hardly anything left in the bank.

Life was miserable for a while. Till i had some savings.

Worth it? To each his own.

A vehicle is a liability and it does requires $$.

When you got a bike and it has problems and you have no $$? Live with it. If it still runs that is.

If you dare to take risks, you have to deal with the consequences.

My fully paid bike runs at about $80 if it doesnt move(insurance, tax , parking ; excl coe)

if you have a patience, save up and get something you really like.

unfortunately, initially i got chopped by the bikeshop damn jialat. I didn't realise it yet until someone told me. I've planned and thought I saved more than enough well now its just enough. Somehow, I got chopped although bringing someone with 20 years of riding experience when buying my first bike...

car is the most expensive. all in, and with the current coe rate. to comfortably run a car would cost nearly 2k per month. bike is slightly more expensive than public transport, about 20-30% more. it's still affordable.

but.. sometimes can't just think about the dollars and cents... bike is arguably more dangerous than car or public transport. rate of death, accident and injury. got to balance the cost & convenience with 'safety measures'. some of it is free, like rider's attitude. other 'buyable' safety stuff to get is probably a good helmet, gloves, etc..
