Thanks for the replies. I'll remember to use gear 1 to move up the slope if I have to stop before turning in. Otherwise, I'll use gear 2.

Hi, I'm currently doing L2. Should I use gear 1 or 2 to go up the slope? I forget to ask the instructor.

gear 1 for 2b bikes

Not necessary must be for 2B bikes.

1. If you have stop at waiting area to clear, u enter slope @ gear one .

2. For L4 & above + TP, If traffic condition is clear from the moment u turn right @ junction , follow by filter left , u enter slope @ gear two. (be traffic condition dependent)

actually they said we should be in gear 2 for going up the slope and not to drag the gears when going up the slope.... the instuctors explained that 1st gear the throttle too sensitive so hard to control when going up the slope.... i guess it also depends where you are coming from.... if your starting from the green cone its going to be hard to pick up enough acceleration to kick up to 2nd without your engine vibrating like crazy.... so i guess if your coming from after the traffic light and the coast is clear, use 2nd gear as you are making the turn up the slope and kick to 1st just before you stop the bike....

any lao jiao care to clarify this?

U are correct.

Actually it is possible to move off from the Green Cone, Change to 2nd gear, the turn up the Slope no. 27. Then accelarate slightly up the slope, thenback to gear 1.

If u wanna stay on 1st gear from the green cone all the way to Slope no.27, then make sure u're riding slowly or make sure ur engine rev/noise is not too loud. To loud means, you should have been in 2nd gear.

Thanks for your reminder. Did my PDL early in the morning, and yes I was indeed on Lesson 6 when I should be on Lesson 5. Did inform the staff and they sort it out for me.

Now waiting for my monthly allowance to come in then will book the next lesson asap. Shocked to find Road Lesson costing close to $40... Hope can clear the lessons in least tries else pocket gonna get burnt.

my sense is that the biggest area to master when going on the road is judgement of the traffic situation. use the circuit to perfect your bike control techniques. when you go on the roads, you should not be struggling with the various aspects of bike handling. rather, your attention should be on the various conditions on the road (i.e. other vehicles, pedestrians, debris, road condition etc).

also, use the circuit to perfect the different procedures that you will need to execute when on the road (e.g. u-turn, turning right at a major junction etc). try to book those slots in the circuit where there are many many cars to get a sense of road condition. this way you will maximize your time/money.

just make sure you are very confident with your bike, go in a relaxed and steady speed, think safety first when on the road and you should be fine.

actually, if you take bus or taxi, watch the road condition and see how different people react. then you get an idea of what you should do when similar conditions arise. check out youtube as well for videos of how to handle different road conditions.

all the best!

agreed!

on the road is about adjusting to road conditions

frm wat u learnt in ur circuit.

lane change and the fundamentals..

cause out there..

no one give u face.

He didn't meant it that way. Was trying to say that if you have enough speed, you can proceed to gear 2 before moving up to the slope but got to stop in gear 1 of course.

If you don't have enough speed, it's fine to stay at gear 1. In the case if you choose to stick to gear 1 all the way, then it's best not to overrev because some instructors/testers might see it as you dragging gear and penalize you for that.

erm... i think a lot of bikes can move off with gear 2

if i recall correctly even cg125 can move off with gear 2...

but not on the slope la...

(p.s. if you accidentally stop with the bike in gear 2 just throttle a bit more and move off... hopefully tester won't notice if you don't make too much noise/stall :p

but gear 3 it probably won't work la)

and actually super 4 is also supposed to move off at gear 1... that guy probably forgot to gear down ba...

With this kind of attitude, you won't be learning well. Imagine how you'll do in the TP if you weren't even taught certain things because you missed a lesson?

agreed with you. rather spend extra 40 bucks then fail TP. waste more time and $$$

A second of precaution is an hour of safety. It never hurts to ask.

Going for my first on-road lesson next Friday at night, anything to look out for? First on-road lesson will cover what aspects of riding?

PS: What is the "proper" and "TP-approve" way of checking blindspot? Head must turn how much? I normally turn my head parallel to my shoulder, scare the tester can't notice...

Don't get nervous and follow instructions clearly. Apply what's been thought in circuit lessons outside. It'll cover filter lanes and the usual riding on the road I guess. Don't think there's a TP-approve way of checking blindspots; just make sure that you check them clearly by turning your head instead of using the corner of your eyes.

yeah, considering most qualified licence holder throw away 90% of all they learnt on the day they passed. Driving centres is still the place to get politically correct instructions and techniques. Just pay heed to instructors, be humble, don't get discouraged or pissed if get told off (ref: Instr M****n). You'll get along fine, oh yeah, drink red bull, it makes you more alert and give you wings.

No.. We're not talking abt moving off.

We're talking abt what gear can be used to turn left onto the slope.

Yes, I do mentally prepare myself before every lesson. It helps me a lot by visualizing what I'm gonna do.

And I do ask questions to clarify doubts, and the questions I ask on the forum are the questions I forgot to ask.

But those Honda Wings on tank, you have to "Kiap" with your thighs leh, else instructors will scold one. :cheeky:

First on-road experience is going to be a combination of excitement and nerves. One thing for sure, keep yourself awake and alert!

You will need to utilize all your bike handling skills while you are on the road. From now till then, familiarize yourself with any of the circuit courses that you have any lingering doubts on. Make sure you can handle all of them with confidence.

Two areas that many people struggle with is lane-changing and U-turns. So pay attention to what the instructors say about these maneuvers. They are important for your (and others') safety.

Since you are going out at night, pay extra attention to road condition since it will be harder to spot slippery surfaces than in the day. Ride a little slower than you normally would and try to be smooth rather than quick.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience and be in the moment!
