I have been taking my bike for 30 mins ride around the estate nightly to get use to it. The first few days felt like I am back to lesson 1a in SSDC :( Engine stalled, bike jerk, forgotten to check blind spot, cannot get the biting point..etc What a totally new experience it was.

I was so comfortable riding the bike in SSDC that I felt too confident. I guess I have to remember what the instructors taught me and try to get use to it.

For those who just passed and wanted to get a bike, please ride safe and full protection gear on please. I looked damn ugly with my jacket and boot but safety first.

How I miss SSDC :(

what is your ride? yeah, it is worthwhile to invest in riding gear but unfortunately they don come cheap so have to get one thing at a time. my plan is get FF helmet then mesh jacket/pants then gloves and lastly boots.

Class 2B - 26/03/2009

Class 2A - 01/06/2010

Class 3 - 10/07/2009

Nice to know you're mostly geared. Knee guards are important, but mostly ignored. A lot of bikes dropping are on the knees. So it's either pants or those motorcycle knees guards which are removable and able to wore under your jeans.

Anyone can ride a bike. Being a biker, is a state of mind.

i wanna offer another view on which gear is more important...see how this compares with other schools of thought.

1. helmet - this one everyone already know is the most important, right?

2. riding boots - many people will think this is the least important. but if you think about it a little more, even if you just scrape your feet on the road, its gonna be damn terok to ride. so even when you do not fall, you can get a bad sprain, strain, abrasion and god knows what. i think this is a good and cheap way to up your protection level.

3. gloves - sure. getting the jacket/pants are important. but if you are saving up, then this is another cheap way to quickly up your protection level. same thinking as the boots. even stationary falls can hurt your hands and fingers. so why not up this first?

4. pants. sure. the jacket is good and all. but if you look at a fall, the part that kenna the first is usually your legs. get a pair with good material and armour.

5. jacket...no need to say already lah :)

most importantly, get the very best that you can afford. don't skimp on protection folks. its your skin (and possibly life) on the line here.

Get boots with ankle protections. My colleague just had a fall on his R6 and in hospital now with metal plates in his ankles, after being pinned under the bike and dragged a little distance. Street riding protection is mostly about the inital impact! But there's no protection against car running over u when you're lying down after a wreck.

Riding isn't about the bike, it takes discipline and common senses to realise the need for gears. If you had ridden a bicycle and fell, you know the extent of damage you had.

Imagine it at greater speed, and with the momentum of the weight of the bike plus you, being flung on the tarmac.

Shiok but then again you've missed out the chance to gauge on how well prepared you are for TP.

Sian. Failed my Lesson 7 this morning. Actually the instructor wrote "PASSED" on my book but quickly scribbled a "REPEAT" over it. Said that my riding wasn't too good today.

I gotta admit, the first session is really quite a handful for habitual oversleepers like me. Was very tired and felt it quite hard to concentrate!

Same problem for me. Very stiff and less alert for session 1 lessons.

Down 2 cans of red bull and kopi for my TP each time...

care to share wats the common mistakes

i'm sure this will help someone...so here it is.

got this handout on the top 5 immediate failures and top 5 common mistakes for 2009 tp tests today after my road revision. i thought it was really useful.

top 5 immediate failure:

1. improper action causing accident/near accident (footed while turning).

-do more practice on moving off at t-junction to improve throttle and clutch control.

-check the side road earlier before going out of figure 8 and crank course.

-when coming to stop, ensure bike is stable to prevent right foot on road.

2. run off the narrow plank.

-position bike in-line with plank.

-move up plank at faster speed from starting point.

-use throttle and half-clutch control and foot brake to slow down.

-focus eye-point a few metres ahead...do not look down.

3. run off course/foot touches ground/strike kerb (crank course).

-ensure bike speed is fast enuf before changing to 2nd gear.

-release clutch slowly after changing to 2nd gear, do not turn throttle.

-only throttle gently after the first turn when on the straight.

4. fail to form up correctly.

-know your route well in advance, remember lane to be used.

-forming up correctly

-eg. one direction turn arrow lane marking form in 2 rows).

-eg. two direction arrow, position in 1 row on the side of intended turn.

5. strike/skip pylon.

-do not move towards 1st pylon too fast.

-position front wheel between 1st pylon and kerb.

-pick up speed only after 2nd pylon. eyepoint always on next pylon.

-most important...get enough practice!!

top 5 common mistakes.

1. wobble when moving off/stopping (2pts)

-moving off - release clutch slowly to biting point and hold.

-do not release clutch too fast cos bike will jerk.

-stopping - when speed is slow, apply gentle front brake.

-when speed is fast, brake earlier!

-late braking causes bike to jerk to stop.

2. wobble when changing lane/negotiating bend/turning (4pts)

-accelerate according to road/traffic condition before bend, turns or lane change.

-practice figure 8 and crank courses to prevent wobbling when turning.

3. poor acceleration (2pts)

-listen to engine sound grow slightly louder before change to next higher gear.

-take more circuit revision to practice moving off quicker.

4. incorrect technique (2pts)

-hold bar firmly with both hands when 1-wheel length away from braking point.

-head must look up, knee gripping tank (**think this is for ebrake lah)

-when front wheel touches braking point, apply front and rear brake together.

-four fingers must be used for front brake.

-clutch in should be just before you come to a complete stop.

5. fail to check blindspot (4pts)

-when bike is on move, always check to direction of turn at shoulder level before turn.

-when bike is stationary, before moving off, check away from kerb, look over shoulder.

ok...thats all for this. think there are good tips here. enjoy and all the best!

there you go bro! :)

in your search for a more feminine looking glove, be sure not to compromise the safety aspects too much or it will defeat the purpose. look for good material, good stitching, good extra padding, good knuckle protection and fingertip protection.

enjoy your search!
