so im not that interested in sports bike (for now since i only 2b, but mayb 2a or 2 who knows)

i also need a box 2 store my helmet n stuff so a box on a sports bike is not nice

my preferences r street/naked bikes like rxz, pulsar, cbr150, fz16

1st - 1st or 2nd hand bike

so i need some advice

i currently haf 5k in my bank

im going 2 stop working soon so i wont b having any income till i enlist

recruit pay also $300+ only right?? (i could also use some NS tips if u guys haf any)

is it enough 4 me own a bike???

my fren say cfm can but is 2nd hand bike

but my father n uncle say try 2 get 1st hand n i also agree with them

i scared 2nd hand the bike always sick need go doctor often n the cost ends up the same as buying a 1st hand

im also planning long term n getting a 1st hand bike n using it all the way till i can afford a car (mayb in my mid 20s??? 4~6 yrs from now god willing)

so is this ok??

2nd - What Bike should I get???

i dont really know the types of bike so i hope u guys can intro me

1st choice is RXZ since i read here its good

my father has been using RXZ for god know how many yrs n i know RXZ is a good bike but it stop production so i cant get a 1st hand right??

so the next yamaha model is fz16 right??

the 1st time i saw it i fell in love with it straight away esp the body n outlook

but i dunno is it a good bike or not

another choice 4 me is the bajaj pulsar

i like the sporty look of it

other then that i dunno unless u can recommend other model n i can go n look it up

3rd - Finances

like ive said earlier i haf 5k in my account

i would like 2 know how much does the machine cost

like the fz n pulsar

how much in total do i need when purchasing a bike

insurance, deposit, monthly payments - how do i manage?

or u guys haf any links 2 any good website that i can read

thx

of totally no relevance to your question, i believe the correct term is NSF :p ns-man/men is when you ORD.

anyway, 5K say much is not much, say little is not little, when you enlist you gonna stay in tekong for 3mnths or so, whos gonna take care of your bike? i suggest saving up more first, get thru BMT, get into your unit. once you get your unit, its probably where you're gonna stay for the next 1yr++ not withstanding overseas exercises, which typically are about 1month durations.

i suggest you put it on hold for now. buy bike is not just about paying for the bike, u nd to pay for parking/tax/maintenance etc etc.

Totally agreed

When i was 20 years ago like you, i saved $10k in my bank just before BMT. within the next 6 months i used up all, for my 400cc bike, cigrattes, barang barang & woman.

So $5k is just peanuts, so forget about buying bike now.

5k is a decent sum, together with your NS allowance you can definitely afford a 2B bike, probably better to get 2nd hand since brand new will stretch your budget a bit.

But I definitely agree with above posts that you should wait till you settle down in NS, ie you know your unit, your boss, your job scope, staying in or out, whether you really need a bike.

wont be buying a bike with 5k.

like others have said, there''s insurance, parking, tax, maintenance.

and don't forget what if you "suay suay" need the money for other emergency?

may sound harsh but if you think about it, an emergency can easily wipe out your savings just like that, even before you buy a bike.

or you can wait until you go into your unit already.

agree nbk3, finish ur bmt first, then consider if u really need a bike or nt.. concentrate on passing first, then steer the boat according to the wind...

judging ur physical specs, either u are muscular or slightly meaty.. wif physical fitness u may end up in ocs or sispec dependin on ur pes also...

Hi, If you're intending to upgrade to 2A or 2, i would suggest you to buy a 2nd hand bike to get your experience first then upgrade to a new bigger bike! If you're gg to BMT for 4 months, you cant ride it anyway so it'll be good like all the other bros suggested to go into unit first before buyin a bike...

imo 5k is actually more than enough to own a bike, but since your looking at first hand probably would not even be enough to pay for machine price like fz16. if u buy rxz lets say 2k, insurance 1k, still got 2k for u to buy ur $15/mth parking bla bla bla. and please please get someone you know to view the bike with you, don kena tok den buy awhile machine spoil need to do overhaul.

Hello TS,

5000 will be enough to buy your bike, but then again, should you really.

Like with previous, strongly suggest you clear your BMT, and postings before you consider getting a bike. If say you stay pasir ris, posted to tuas naval base, then perhaps justifiable. But if say stay pasir ris, posted to pasir ris camp?

Also regarding choice of bike, it's up to you really. 5k I wouldn't recommend you get a 1st hand. Why?

Because firstly, new bike depreciate too much from a financial point of view.

Secondly from a practical point of view, you are prone to dropping, skidding or accident as you are still learning, not saying you will, but saying chances are higher.

Thirdly, with your budget, almost half of it will go straight to COE already, hence, you may run short. (For e.g COE @ 2k, your insurance 1st year will most likely be 1P = 1k , already 3k, 1st hand bike 2k not sure what you can really get there)

So, why not just chill a while, take your team go enjoy army first, then like some other brothers mention, you sure you can tahan the monthly fees?

Buy bike, say you clear everything one shot, and for some reason your savings left 1k. Is that savings really really yours? Not really, because you will need to use that to standby tanking the next 1 year insurance, road tax.

And last scenario, you every month 550, combat corporal, cleared bike installment. Depending on your bike, taking Phantom TA 200 (Which would suit you nicely btw, reasonable fc, reasonable for a 1.8m guy, surprisingly reasonable power, put box looks okay, not very problematic), 1 week pump $20 (over estimated), 1 month $80, plus season parking $17 totaling $100/mth.

$20 for cashcard (for shopping center/erp if say minimal) total $120 /mth. You earn $550/mth, hence 550 - 120 = 430. Sounds reasonable? So far still okay. $10/day for expenses (which is really estimated because see movie already $10) $430 - 300 (10/day x 30) = $130.

$130 is your reserve cash. Pay phone bill (NSF plan $19.95/mth) = $110.

Basically you left $100/month, and now to put things in perspective and how much $100 can do for your bike:

Change chain and sprocket, not enough. Battery, can left $40+-. Change tires, not enough. Change EO + Spark plug = okay, got $50 balance. Meaning if touch wood everything run nicely, you will have enough, once got problem, your bike park at shop.

So for now, please don't get a bike, take your time to build up more savings. Rather you take cab and can enjoy a bit, then everyday stay home with a bike at void deck because no money for petrol.

Finish your BMT first and if you still got the strength (mentally), think of the advice given by the bros here and choose a suitable bike for yourself during your stink in Tekong.

Posted

NS right? I'll tell you the sensible thing to do, get a spark or wave. 2 strokes will dig into your pockets with 2T and relatively high fuel consumption, at most you can get roughly 20km/l, race tuned ones can go down to 13. 4T kupchais can go up to 40km/l, 45 if you run lean.

4 strokes make more sense long term, 2 yrs of your NS especially.

seriously, at tat age, owning a private transport is damn shiok la. just take the money get a phantom 200, easy maintenance, top box and u r good to go.

but the thing is once u get your phantom 200, u will spend n invest more to upgrade which will eventually suck u into getting better and bigger bikes. this is generally the case!

u only live once, just go for it! otherwise take license for wat? who say buy already muz ride everyday? phantom 200 leave it there also wont spoil la, at most rust

No more regrets.

actually if a 2b bike is fully paid, it should be pretty cheap to maintain it every month if the bike does not give problems. i think the only thing you will need to worry about at your age is insurance. insurance at such an age can already hit over 1K yearly.

Posted

Get a good conditioned phantom with 2-3years coe left. Been riding one for 1.5years now. with roadtax, insurance, maintenance, summons etc doesnt even add up to 4k. Get one from the forum, cheaper. I made my mistake by getting one from a shop. This is only my humble opinion ofcourse

A day without riding, is a wasted day.

oh ****

sry guys

i 4got 2 mention that im not buying bike soon

like wad most of u guys said, im planning 2 do that

cos my frens also serving NS they also give me the same tips

bmt no need use bike

weekend only can go out so wasted

ive read them all n considered it

but actually wad most of u said i already intend 2 do

im not buying bike soon (hopefully by the time COE drop)

cos my fren also serving NS now

he say after bmt then buy

that also depends on the job n place

if kena near2 my house no need bike also can

alot of ppl do that n follow this pattern just like u guys said

my fren also say

go in NS make alot of frens n bros

cfm got biker kaki n can talk 2 them n ask arnd n survey n think of wad bike i shld get

there also hope got lobang get good 1 n can get plenty of help on bikes

n ya intend to follow

my enlistment letter say 9-week modified bmt at tekong

by the way i live at clementi

so dont haf that much camp arnd west area, most is at the other side of our small island

im a pes C9L3 (PES C usually high chance no need stay in right?? book in n out everyday???)

modified bmt

i no need take IPPT also hehe (but my standard can get silver n if i try hard can get gold also but i not that muscular)

last time sec sch i kena tackle my knee dislocated

from there my knee always loose

by the way im not that big la

arnd 178cm like that

which bike would suit me??

some say phantom ta200

is it a good bike??

unless i make it look nice2 then shld b ok ah

put box also nice

exp or not this machine??

how bout pulsar le?? no1 say anyhting about pulsar?? exp or not

i see the body dam chio

oh ya like i mention in my 1st post

the reason i wan get 1st hand bike is bcos mayb i wont b upgrading to 2a or 2

i wan a brand new good starting bike that would last me all the way till i can afford a car

i only need a bike 4 transport n convenience

hopefully in 5 ~ 7 yrs time by the time im in my mid or late 20s i wan 2 drive a car n settle down

the above is 1 scenario

the 2nd scenario is :

i get a cheap 2nd hand bike with like 4~5yrs coe left

by the time i finish NS i will start working (i no intention further study, got diploma only)

then i upgrade 2 a bigger bike

then get a car

this 1 long way

which scenario better??

1 - buy good 1st hand bike that would last all the way

or

2 - buy cheap 2nd hand bike, upgrade big 1 then car slowly
