Hi fellow bros,

I am interested in knowing more about brake pads. Read through a number of pages of this thread and realised that I am too far behind and it will take ages for me to finish reading all. So would any kind bros please help me with the following questions. Efforts deeply appreciated.

1. Is there any website that I can go to, to read up more about brakes, brake pads, and gain more knowledge? If there is, can someone please give me direction? =)

2. When will I know it is time for me to change brake pad? Just by the braking feeling or do I have to open my brake pad once a while to check?

3. What is the usual life span of a brake pad?

Thank you all for your kind attention and looking forward to your favourable replies. Thank you once again.

I have read all...hehe. Spent 2 hours reading the past 21 pages.

Here is my conclusion:

The following order is according to the friction level, single alphabet grip poorer than double or can say have lower friction level. Later alphabets have better grips or can say have higher friction level. So HH is best grip, H is 2nd best, GG 3rd, G last.

Some popular brands mentioned:

EBC- $60-70+ per set of 2 brake pads (HH rated sintered).

Vesrah - $35-38 per set of 2 brake pads (HH rated sintered).

Ferrado platinum- $18-25 per set of 2 brake pads Silver/red packaging (organic pads).

SBS brand - $15-19 per set of 2 brake pads (organic pads)

EBC - generally have good reviews except the price which is 3 times the price of normal SBS brake pads, grip well in both dry and wet. Expensive brake pads for those who are safety minded or racing oriented.

Vesrah - Good reviews on performance also in both dry and wet, but price is a bit higher than average compared to normal SBS pads, but again thats for sintered HH rating so nothing to complain. I never tried before, may be trying in future. Eversuccess is selling. Cheap sintered brake pads for those who wish to try out the difference between between organic and sintered brake pads.

Ferrado platinum - Good reviews on performance and price as well (my choice bcos I tried before at $26 per set including installation on my rear brake, good initial feeling compared to SBS which is quite gentle brake pads). Cheap and affordable performance brake pad.

SBS brand - Normal brake pads for normal usage, during wet a bit not so gripy and need to pump brake a few times. Need some warm up. Creates more brake dust. Other than that, most popular among many normal transport bike user. ( I am using this now, creates screeching sound sometimes like SBS bus...haha) For its price, no complain la, once finished the pads, I will changed to Ferrado or Vesrah, EBC seems too ex for me.

For me I have steel braided hose in front only. So I will wait until my brake pads are worn out, then I change my rear brake line to HEL steel line. Then thats the time to try out better brake pads like Vesrah. For normal usage, Ferrado is more than good enough for the braking feel compared to SBS.

Most important is u must get use to the bike's brake and know how much to apply so that it will be most efficient yet does not lock. Sometimes its becos the rider never press hard enuf thinking it will lock becos they dont understand their bike or they never bother to test and learn it. Its best to find a empty stretch of road or car park to test your braking. Test separately at first, get to know your braking power of front brake alone without rear brake and rear brake alone without front brake. Then test both together. Repeat until u get a good feel how much to apply during emergency. ALso learn manual ABS, learn to release the brake pressure and press again and release brake pressure and press again. I have friends who brake all the way and doesnt release brake pressure. Then when during emergency, they usually dont have anymore allowance if more sudden braking is needed. When they never release the brake pressure and press further in, most cases the wheel will be lock and the braking power is not there. Release brake pressure after every time u brake hard and brake again is a good habit so that in emergency, u still have more allowance to brake further.

During the time when u are getting use on the brakes, u will know your braking efficiency and whether the braking equipments are of proper order. If u feel that anything is not right, upgrade or service the brake pump, brake line, brake piston, and make sure your brake disc is of good condition before u think of changing this and that. Get the basic done properly then test the brake pads in order to conduct a fair test. I believe many user who replied here doesnt really know their real braking performance well.

Actually I beg to differ Vesrah is a cheaper sintered brand, It cost more than EBC overseas, but in sing, as yen is much weaker and cost of the import or whatever is still much cheaper than EBC,DP or any other sintered pads.

Every pads are different, some focus on initial bike and some easy modulation braking torque. I like pads with good initail bite.

I also thinking of new brake lines like Hel or Venhill....

So many pages..No time to read..But if someone can help recommend me good and affordable rear brake pads for KR that would be sweet..

Anyway when I press (feather) my front brakes..Got very quiet hissing sound..More like paer being rubbed with sandpaper..Should it be a cause for worries?

Thanks..
