I parked my bike in an alley between two buildings. This alley is not a road, and cars do not enter the alley due to its narrowness and, well, the fact that it is not a road. The back doors of a few F&B outlets open out into this alley.

I got a parking ticket saying: "2031 - park in such a manner as to cause unnecessary obstruction to other road users".

Can they actually fine me for parking in this alley? It is not an actual road, so I don't see how my parking there caused "unnecessary obstruction to other road users."

Also, has anyone tried appealing through the One.Motoring website? Will that work or should I write directly to the traffic police?

Thanks.

Write to the authority who fined you.

Better do not state the reason saying it is not a road or assuming no obstruction.

Be sincere and cook up a story which will at least convince yourself.

If u need help, just let me know!

Haha. Cheers and good luck!

Thanks for the response!

I'm wondering though, are they actually allowed to fine you for parking in a place like that?

Also, when you write in to LTA (they're the ones who fined me), do you fill in the form on the One.Motoring website? (The LTA website has a link for appeals which redirects you to the One.Motoring website.) Or do you send in your request by post?

as long as it is a public space, there will always be at least one authority capable of fining you for illegal parking. and yes, the area you described is indeed public space, so the only issue is which authority. In general it can be HDB/URA, town council, CISCO, LTA, TP, etc depending on the specific space. I can only say for certain that if its not an actual road, then its not CISCO coz they can only fine if its on actual road.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

of course they can! as long as you are not parking at the proper designated parking slot, it is illegal parking. you can appeal online.

try to find some reasons that say you are only there for a short while for some emergency like needing the toliet in the nearby kopi shop.

don't argue with them saying this is not a road therefore how to cause obstruction to other road users. no matter what, you still did an illegal parking which they can use it against you. road user is a board term if you ask me.

play nice.

Ya, they did the right thing to fine you, otherwise why should everyone pay 15$ for season parking if we can find a covenient alley and park our bikes there. Although your one bike may not cause inconvenience, but if everyone thinks like you and goes and parks in that alley and jams it then surely causes inconvenience. So they fine you to set an example.

i think thread starter nv rly park there everyday. i sometimes myself if i need to go cbd there are no official paid parking place, id choose these kind of parking spot rather than parking at the side of the road which is easily noticed by lta or cisco. season parking, i think its a different case here my friend. cheers

Well, logic is same. If I am allowed to park in alley without anybody fining me, then why should I buy season parking. If you park there for 1 min or 1 month, for the authorities, they dont care, if they catch they fine you. Its about knowing the rules, taking the risk of breaking the rules and if caught bearing the consequences. In this case, TS has taken the risk and broke the rule and caught and he has to bear the consequences, ofcourse he can appeal, but here he is asking whether they are right in fining him. My answer to his question is "Yes they are right in fining him" :)

Yet a another rider paying the price for negligence. You wouldn't expect a car to park indiscriminately anywhere, so likewise it's the same case for motorcycles. No exceptions here. Don't get me wrong, I have had such fines in the past (parking on pavement, no coupon parking, expiry of season parking, parking on season ticket slot, etc). I guess I have learnt my lesson the hard way by paying $$$ for such fines. I hope all riders learn to park at proper designated parking lots. The government is fair on this note, they're only asking for everyone to park at proper designated lots. For us riders, 65 cents covers the WHOLE day, so consider ourselves lucky. Even if you park at private establishments, $1-$2 for whole day parking is very reasonable. Tread starter can try appealing, but no guarantee of waiver though.
