Dear SPCA Supporters,

Join us this Saturday (16 May) at the 2nd Singapore Animal Welfare Symposium, co-organised and hosted by NUS Student’s Animal Welfare Group and ACRES.

Event Details:

Date: Saturday 16th May 2009.

Time: 8.30am-4.15pm.

Venue: National University of Singapore (NUS), Lecture Theatre 27, 21 Lower Kent Ridge Road.

Attendance is free, but please register beforehand at http://www.animalwelfare.sg/registration.html

Find out more at http://www.animalwelfare.sg

Open to all, the Symposium is a platform for members of the public of all ages, as well as animal-related organisations, to discuss issues affecting domestic and wild animals and those exploited on an industrial scale and come up with effective ways to end animal suffering.

Lively discussions on the topics ranging from pet abandonment to the ongoing Resorts World at Sentosa whale sharks debate and the welfare of animals in captivity at the Singapore Zoo, will put the spotlight on these pressing concerns and allow all of us who care about animals to discuss how we can successfully address these issues and together come up with effective strategies to end animal exploitation.

This year, exciting presentations will also be made by the 2008 Animal Protectors Grant recipients, showing how they have made a positive difference for animals in Singapore over the past year, and sharing how you can make a difference too!

The Symposium will also see the launch of the 2009 Animal Protectors Grant. Come along and find out how you can apply for the grant and make 2009 the year that your dreams for helping animals come true!

Attendance at the Symposium can be your first step on the rewarding path to becoming an advocate for animals or, for those already involved in the animal welfare movement, the Symposium is a wonderful opportunity to meet with like-minded people, chat to local animal welfare experts and learn how you can do even more to help our furred, feathered and scaled friends!

Hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Selina Sebastian

Hi, anyone got a puppy to give away for adoption?

Hi, I do know of someone who has a puppy for adoption. He's a local cross breed, about 4 - 5 months old. Currently tied outside some HDB flat.

Sincerely interested?

usin choke chain,it works for my dog. Of cos,sme might not agreed...saw another method, using treats, the dog din really obey.

To gain something, there must be a sacrifice. This is the principle of equivalent trade

From my expereince with my boys, I'd recommend training with chok chain then harness. Reason being, the chok chain causes pain and surely the dog will obey to feel less of it. Switch between chok chain and harness during the same training plan because once the 'pain in the neck' isn't felt, the dog will inadvertently want to do otherwise or simply appear to you as disobedience. You'll know he or she has learnt something when what you want is achieved even when the harness is on. But please don't be so over-confident as to test your skills with your dog off the leash, especially in public places. And as for the barking part, it helps when you're around to witness the act then grab hold of your dog's muzzle (closing the jaws), look em in the eyes and say sternly, 'Quiet' or 'Stop It' or just 'Shut Up'. Upon repetition, the dog will learn. These are common words even strangers will use on your dog so its easier for him/her to learn and recognize, just like Sit or Stay. In any case its very important to have eye contact.

Fortunately, I just had to teach my eldest and the other 2 monsters just watched and learned gradually. :)

Just remember that no two humans are the same even for twins, and this holds true for animals as well. Don't base what you read on the forums or interest groups as a rule of thumb. There are common methods and there are those that will suit only your dog. Don't force them. Learn to know what they want too. Its usually easier to ask why the dog doesn't do what you want. But do you know what he/she wants? For me, one's lazy, one's greedy and one's stubborn but they all enjoy a nice fat raw hide chewy and squeaky toy.
