Hi,

What do you think of the alternative of charging ERP through "monthly subscription" mode?

Since the infrastructure is already there, gantry can detect the date/time/charge rate for a particular plate number and issue monthly bill.

the pros i could think of is:

- infrastructure is already established. safe-to-say no loohphole. passing through ERP gantry w/o IU unit are caught and fined $70 as it is.

- eliminate cash card stealing. this is more significant to bikers, the forgetful and blur ones.

- eliminate "no cash card inside when passing through ERP gantry" fine. for whatever reason it could be.

- eliminate the need to top up cash card for ERP purposes. to some people it means one less card to carry in the wallet.

the cons i could think of is:

- stealing of IU unit. but this could be solved by terminating that IU s/n. just like deactivating the sim card if u lost ur phone.

- additional bill. troublesome to pay monthly.

Good idea.

This idea has more pros than cons.

The most improtant advantage is it saves the problems of stolen cashcards on bikes.

More suggestions, the bill can be sent to the owner and be paid by GIRO, this will make it even more convienent.

To seekie,

The negative points u have mentioned u already gave the answers liao, so not much of a problem, I thk.

I can only think of a very minor issue:-

For rental and borrwoing cars/bikes from friends, sometimes we want to pay using our own cashcards, but this monthly bill thing, every charge will go to owner, so borrower must pay in advance.

Also, we do not know how much is charged when we cross gantry (currently we can c it from the cashcard on the spot).

People ask me, "Why ride bike?" I ask them back :"Why drive car?"

How about smaller ERP units? I've seen ERP-like units the size of cellphones (3210 size), and they work using prepaid subscription. Much better than the cashcard rubbish. And its obviously too huge for bikes!

I'll never have an ERP unit on my bike as long as it remains this size, its an insult to the design of the bike...

Cannot leh... they will lose alot of revenue! If everything go wireless, we dun need to put cashcard, therefore we won't forget to insert cashcard! So there will be no more $10 bonus made for every entry into restricted areas without a cashcard!

they considered this when they first implemented the Every Road Pay system.

however, the problem with the alternative is that your movements are tracked and invoiced with the dates and times and which gantries.

on the balance of it, the pay-as-you-go system was implemented instead.

He who hesitates is lost!

Sorry for Off Topic but why should bikes even pay for ERP when we aren't the ones contributing to a traffic jam? Perhaps we should petition for that instead

sorri :offtopic: .. bikes no traffic jam? think abt the msian bikers coming to sg everydae :giddy: ... its a gd system as it is more convenient and reliable, but the use of cash card will be lesser..

And when it's stolen, you sure u wanna pay $150++ for a new iu each time it's stolen? For sure the gahment aint gona give you a free one!

I wont want to use this system, even if it is implemented, although my off in the CBD. I'll rather risk forgetting to takeout my cashcard and losing that mere $20 than paying $150+ for the iu each time it gets stolen. And mind you, if you use it often, u wont be forgetting to take it out. And for those not using it often, no worries bah, just dun store more than $10 each time will do.

It will be better if they can have system like the easylink card, whereby a deduction is allowed even when the stored value is insufficient. And when you top-up the card, it makes up for the difference.

ya, i guess stealing is a concern here.

however i believe that there is no additional reason as to why people will want to steal the IU unit more then compared to now.

doubt people will go all the trouble to mangle and kaput your secured IU unit just to pass by a gantry or two before it gets terminated.

of course current scenario such as itchy hand or by those who feels a sense of achievement by stealing things from one's bike still apply. but should have no more or only minute increase if this system is implemented.

i think if no ERP we won't be having so much problem already.

I don't know why our country can be so proactive in being (let's say) I.T. savvy, or being the global hub for tourists, but not so for our road system and for ERP technology improvement??

I'm afraid that even when I grow old, they wouldn't change the way ERP works. Or even its ease of charging people $10 for failure to insert a cashcard.

Just a sudden thought came to my mind... why not just do away with the card system!

I thought maybe LTA could do this:

1. Add a sensormatic thingy on the bike and car (instead of the current IU unit)... that can detect your entrance or exit at the various ERP gentry.

2. Instead of charging it straightaway (current system - pay by cashcard), LTA will send a monthly bill just like electricity bill.

Isn't that better so that motorist don't need to worry about forgetting to put the cashcard into the unit (possibly causing accidents) and getting fined!

What do you guys think??

Biking is something that everyone can learn and enjoy! :goodluck:

Ditto!

They chose the "fine" approach of implementing the ERP.

To err is human. To not have a cashcard while travelling under an activated gantry makes a man $10 poorer.

I think this is a wakeup call to improve the current system in view of what has been discussed! :cheer:

Do you know what's their wake-up call in this case?

- Inventing smaller, slimmer, albeit esthetically cumbersome IU's
