Hi everyone. My wife and I are planning to ride up (on a Honda CB750) for the very first time to Thailand during the 4 day CNY 2016 weekend.

We've been talking and planning about it for the past 22 years since getting married but never got down to it.

Well, we finally have agreed that we want to do it so I'm asking fellow bikers who have done this before if you have any tips to share that we both should take note of especially since we only have 4 days to spare.

Moderators, forgive me if I have posted at the wrong section.

Hope to hear from those senior tour experts.

Cheers!

How deep into Thailand are you intending to go? Check if your existing insurance covers Thailand or not. Bring copies of your insurance certificate. Also, print out a copy of vehicle registration from onemotoring as proof of ownership of your bike. No experience myself, but from what I've read from somewhere else, it might be needed for customs clearance. Again, bring multiple copies.

the question is , can the wife tahan sitting for 8 hours on a bike ?

Well, we both have done multiple KL trips and she's the adventurous sort. We're not looking to break records or ride at blistering speeds but just to cruise say between 120kmh to 140kmh...

Hi Simon. Thanks for the advice. By the way, I do believe you're pals with The Chew’s (maroon ST13 and yellow Magna)? They're my former church mates. Saw your post. Have a good trip.

Hi ,

The last CNY(2015) went to Cameron Highlands.

Start off 0400hrs frm SG

Super long jam after Nilai upwards [0800hrs at nilai]

Usually took us 5-6 hrs to Cameron.

That day almost 10 hrs....to reach.

The most sickening part,E lane also being used by car.

Toilet & Pump petrol also need to Q. very long.

Just sharing.......

Hmm...

If got enough leave... try leave on Friday (1 day leave, stay Ipoh eat eat walk walk?) and return on Wed (1 day leave) to avoid the traffic.

Any festive holidays, the jam would be super terrible at the SG/MY Customs and also the stretch of NSHW from KL to Penang.

I'll be going into Thailand too but from CNY 4th day...

2017

11 - 25 Nov - 15D, Taiwan - Fly and Scoot

2018

7 - 15 Apr - 9D, Phuket and Hatyai Songkran

17 Nov to 2 Dec - 16D, North East Thailand (Issan)

2019

30 Mar to 7 Apr - 9D Korea/Jeju Fly and Ride

8 - 24 Nov - 16D, Mae Hong Son

just came back from a solo trip to Hatyai, plan for an overnite stop since you are with wife. Plan your route before hand and rest whenever you are tired. Print out your vehicle logcard and you should be fine. For me, i sleep over at Penang on day one and reach. Hatyai noon on the next day.

I just came back from a trip up north. Should be pretty smooth to Hatyai. I rode NSHW early morning and late night so did not encounter traffic. But was on my way up to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Have some public posts on my FB. Maybe some of the info will be useful.

Was planning to go phuket from 5-9 Feb but worried on the nshw jam during cny peak periods.

GO up and come back odd hrs. Coming back on the 9 can be very bad. Try to avoid 9 as many Malaysia coming back to Singapore and Singapore holiday makers. I ever drove from KL to Sin took me 7 hrs. Jam to go into rest stop for a pee too. No parking at rest stop. Its a big no no to travel back the day before long CNY holiday ends. And that does not includes a 3 hrs jam at both custom. Total took me 10 hrs to reached home.

Car or bike? Bike has advantage of lane splitting to avoid jams.... though speed will still be slower than no jam of course.

Bike have no space to lane split as the highway jam even on the road shoulder. 2 lane highway will bcom 4 lanes jam all the way. Saw many bikers rest at petrol station.

yes festive season is a no no to travel on normal hours.

petrol station jam up , way before going in , cars taking up the road shoulder,

u lane spilt at speeds maybe up to 70km/h .

on a sport bike , weather hot, traffic slow, bike hot.

your inner things will slowly burn up

Posted (edited)

1.make sure bike in good condition

2.bring your photocopy insurance and lta owner reg letter

3.buy thai vehicle insurance at malaysia side petronas petrol station so no need to stop after thai border

4.top up petrol malaysia side cheaper

5.park bike near thai immigration booth pay rm2 per passport for speedy clearance then go n do vehicle carnet at another counter nearby rm1 or 2 tip also for fast service.

6.go back to bike and ride through the checkpoint. (make sure you go back same way becos of the carnet.)

7.after thai immigration 5 min ride you come to secondary check customs dun bother just ride through.

8.when going back home you must surrender the vehicle carnet at the booth after you chop passport. they will tell you where the booth is and all that(becos of the rm2 tips)
