I would like to know how many ways are there to start the bike engine..?

 

i'm quite new to bike stuffs and i'm trying to learn as much as possible..

no need to learn these lah, ur bike use what to start then u use loh

the thing i dont understand is wats the diff between electric and push start?

 

kick start are normally use on scrambler right?

Kick start usually used on 2 stroke bikes. Scramblers mostly kick start but some also use electric starts.

 

Electric start: Use keys. Turn n it will ignite. Exactly like a car.

 

Push start: A last resort if u can start the bike. Basically u pedal the bike with ur legs with ur ignition to 'ON'. At one point, u keep opening ur throttle and the bike will 'come to life'. Hafta experience it. Quite a wonder for first timer when u try it.

I thought electric start..Its only after you push the start button then will start? Definitely not like a car at all..o_O

for bikes with only electric start, if your battery is low or the starter is faulty you may have to push start to get the bike going .

Bro, no offence, but when I read your post, my reaction was, "What u mean keep opening ur throttle???". Maybe you could clarify what u meant, because i'm really scratching my head.

 

For push start, what I do is:

1. Clutch in

2. kick to 2nd gear, not 1st gear (1st gear has the most torque, u will die trying)

3. switch on bike

4. Push from the side, still clutching in

5. When enough momentum, throw the clutch and open throttle, while still pushing bike

6. Once bike start, quickly clutch in, engage neutral gear and sit on the bike.

7. Let the bike warm up and go mechanic check what's wrong with it

Some Kawasakis (ZX11 and ZX14, to my knowledge) cannot engage 2nd gear unless the bike is moving at least 10km/h.

 

Kind of a bugger actually, as I prefer moving off in 2nd gear when I pillion. Can't imagine push starting the high compression 1352cc engine in 1st gear.

From my experience, sitting on the bike and pushing with your feet does not give you enough speed for the bike to start, especially big bikes. Of course unless someone is helping you push from the back.

got abit of down slope is useful when push start, but must make use of it

Really Interesting to know that, we learn something new everyday. Guess can't engage 2nd gear because of the high torque. I remember those who rode the Army bikes told me they needed to engage 3rd or 4th gear to push start, guess also because of the high torque.

 

From my experience, sitting on the bike and pushing with your feet does not give you enough speed for the bike to start, especially big bikes. Of course unless someone is helping you push from the back.

 

Its not due to the torque, but due to the way the gearbox is designed.

 

It is difficult to bump start in 1st gear because there is not enough force to overcome the compression. Harley Davidsons and huge diesel engines have compression relief valves that makes it much easier to crank the engine.

Hi this is my first time posting... saw this thread and thought i can share what i learnt during ns to push start the army scrambler..

 

Basically its the same as what Father John said..

 

Just that at pt 5. when enuf momentum, we jump up to sit on bike while the bike is moving, throw clutch and open throttle. Bike starts, quickly clutch in, engage 1st gear, and move on.

 

It's fun doing it.. but tiring.. :)

it all depends. if i try to jump onto my bike after push-starting it, i will most probably knock the bike over or loose balance. i've had plenty of experience push starting my old bike though, all thanks to the sh*tty battery.

 

They teach a running push-start and mounting without stopping to bike recce bike guys in the army. I am not sure they still do this, but they did about 8-9 years back.

ya i learnt the running and mounting push start method during my recce training in army.. that was about 7yrs ago.. it was a requirement to pass the 2b course..

 

at that time still quite agile.. now.. hmm will think twice on doing it..

useful to know how. but best to mantain your bike that you will never have to. something basic as changing your batteries every 1.5 years. of course sometimes there are other elements that come into play. like dead rectifier. or someone "forgot" to turn off the bike, leaving the headlights on for a few hours.

 

i got stick legs, so i prefer to use slopes as far as i can. ;)

 

for really big bikes like the busa... solo effort is not reccomended. probably possible... but man that thing is heavy. plus its no joke if you dropped your bike when you run out of breath. the engine braking can surprise anyone.
