Hi guys. Sorry every time I post in this thread it means my pulsar got problem.

But this time I really had it. My pulsar without fail will not be able to start at least once a week (usually Sunday or Monday, not like it matters, but still), then miraculously be able to start the next day and carry on being normal until it reaches Sunday or Monday again.

How it does not start:

E-start button pushed, engine turns, mechanical whirl, tacho goes up, but nothing starts.

Kick-start feels weird, like I'm not kicking anything that's causing it to start. It's hard to explain this, but there is a difference between the normal days and days where it fails to start.

What I've done:

I've went Universal Motors like three times. Ah teck and Jacky checked everything and it's good to go. Cause as mentioned earlier, my bike only has problems on those mysterious days of the week. I've also changed a new rectifier and a new battery (less than 2 weeks old).

Currently my bike is parked at Esplanade cause it refuses to start again yesterday after work (Monday). But today after work when I went back to Esplanade, it still refuse to start. So I'm asking if there is ANYONE confident enough and kind enough to drop by Esplanade after 6pm on weekdays to help me check out what's wrong with my Pulsar? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread. Won't be able to thank you enough.

@FiddyCent, nice looking bike you got there :thumb: Humble suggestion about the photos though, is you remove those with Ah Teck. He doesn't like his picture posted, we have to respect his wishes. He allows us to take photos without making pb about it so we should respect his wish if he doesn;t want to appear on photos on the web, I'm sure you agree :)

@Irach78, congrats - future bikerette ? :D

@muzzyfuzzy, my take is that the days it won't start is not a coincidence: I suspect these are days where the day before or itself you haven't used the bike a lot (Sat, Sun or Mondays). Only used it for one trip during the day and maybe a short one. Please confirm ? If so, this looks like a battery problem, so could involve the rectifier as well. I've had the same issue/symptoms for a couple of weeks until I figured it out.

It's tricky because if you ride enough, the problem will disappear -> the battery will recharge enough. Also, the temperature affects it: very cold, the bike will be more stubborn to start. So if parked at a windy/rainy spot, could affect it as well. Once the bike starts though, just a little bit of warm up and throttle will keep it going.

I didn't understand your description of how it doesn't start so it's difficult to say what's the cause, here's what I suggest you check:

1. Voltmeter or multimeter to record voltage when "cold" and when started

2. If voltage is low (

3. If battery has enough voltage, check both your spark plugs, take them out and inspect them (see MJ's profile for photos of good/bad spark plugs)

4. If battery doesn't charge enough, change the rectifier - another way of knowing this is to change your habits: ride more on Sunday/Saturday (like 40-60min) and see if it starts easily the next morning.

Now if this is a battery problem as I suspect, a push start will always resolve it. Do you know how to do that by yourself ? To prepare for it, and avoid getting stuck without bike after work, always try to park up a slope or not far from one - or at least flat space where you can push the bike in case after work it doesn't want to start again.

If you know your bike is old, and you know the battery is still the stock one, my advice to you is to get a brand new battery, and if I were you, I'd put my money there without hesitation, it's a good investment.

Also, if you have an alarm, or any additional accessory that draws juice from the battery while riding or when stopped, disconnect them from the battery until you resolve the issue. (Note that when you disconnect the battery's connections, you will loose your Trip 1 and Trip 2 recorded figures. They will both reset to zero).

no wonder...i was feeling wierd that when did unique open a shop at bukit merah...lol

so universal motors is the only one stop for all pulsar riders to get their pulsar serviced?

No, you can go anywhere to get it serviced. But they are the only ones who actually know the bike and know what they are doing to it.

This whole debate about the Pulsars being so difficult to maintain and find parts for was relevant in 2008 but seriously, today it's not anymore.

The Pulsar is becoming so popular almost every week we have someone here asking questions about getting one. There are so many Pulsar riders out there it's impossible to park somewhere and not see a couple other Pulsars.

Soon having a Pulsar will be as boring as having a Super 4 in Singapore :o What does that tell you about the ease of servicing ? About the spare parts ? Do you really think this thread would be so lively and the Pulsar's popularity steadily growing each year if it was problematic to service it.

People need to stop making it sound like we're riding some exclusive model of motorbike that's difficult to take care of. And usually people who talk about the Pulsar don't and never did own one. So..

Without even looking at the Pulsarians who add a new accessory or tweak to their ride every month, there are tons of pulsarians who picked the bike for its FC and above all, how little maintenance it requires.

It's an economical bike that when treated well, gives back tons in terms of endurance and servicing needs.

I think we should all just stop debating over parts and maintenance. As far as i'm concerned, this bike is the cheapest bike to maintain in Singapore, given the speed and multiple uses it can deliver. A wave just doesn't even come closer to it...

spare parts are easy to get at UM Bt merah..wave is also economical, any bikeshop also have..dats e onli diff

but wave if kena strong wind feel like e bike goin to fly away liddat..pulsar more steady bo pipi. :D

anyway, when u buy bike..follow ur heart..not ur brain..hahaha..ride more worry less..i change bike almost yearly..hahaha..

Hi everyone. Is it tough to get spare parts for Pulsar? Heard from several bike service centres that they don't do servicings for Pulsar as the main spare parts holder doesn't release much parts out.

Currently in a dilema on whether to get a pulsar or wave for my transportation.

One big difference between wave and pulsar is the tank size. Pulsar 17 ltrs tank can go to jb and top and ride in SG for 750 kms. Wave I guess is 4 ltrs?

Wave no matter what modifications you do will still remain a cub. Pulsar can look like a super bike. That is priceless.

Yes Universal Motors is the only place to service your bike and have a peace of mind. But thats not an issue. Afterall even if there are 100 bikeshops that can service your bike, you just need 1 bike shop that you can trust and rely upon :cheeky:

sorry i off topic but i think your bike dont work weekends lol! no la back to serious i am riding fz 16 likke @YenYu and previously i notice my bike cant start after every raining day and finally find out that i have a habit to use a dry cloth placed under my seat to wipe my bike dry before riding then put the cloth back under the seat ad eventually discover that the air inlet is at under the seat and my bike cannot start because the inlet suck my wet cloth lol it might be some stupid problems like that just my point of view on the matter.

@O'Ren: Hi ORen, thank for taking the effort to type such a lengthy post.

Initially, I did thought it was because I didn't use it for a day or so as well before it died. But I kept records of when my bike acts up and there are days where I did ride the bike the day before even though it died the very next day. However, I did notice that my bike never died in school (which is about a 22km journey) but always die at home, at my girlfriend's place, or at work which are all rather short distances (like maybe low 10s km). While this might be a probable issue, clocking 22km a day just to ensure that my bike doesn't die is really quite ridiculous.

Okay let me try to describe and elaborate with my limited knowledge what happens when I push the e-start button. Engine turns (as in I can see something rotating in that little window on the side of the engine), there's that distinctive sound, my tachometer needle goes up, and if I hold onto the e-start button longer, my headlight will slowly light up and get brighter. But it just will not start.

The kick-start is the weirder one. When things work normally, when I kick-start, I can hear a loud of mechanical whirring and the engine will start flawlessly usually in one kick. When it's dead though, the kick-start is like one fell swoop with not as much whirring as before and it ends with a distinctive "tiak" sound. Okay that wasn't any better but honestly it's hard to describe.

I've changed my battery and rectifier both recently at UM (in the past 2 weeks) so I honestly doubt there is anything to do with these two. Before I changed my battery, the mech at UM did a voltmeter check for me before turning the engine on, and after turning it to see if there is any charging. There was. But I changed my battery anyway the week after because I was afraid it will die again. (which it did anyway in the end)

I've also tried to push-start the bike by going down the slope, which it started. I revved a while hoping to keep the engine warm and all but when I closed my throttle it died off. I probably didn't warm it enough, but that's seriously not a permanent solution.

I also have no alarm or any fancy electronic equipment attached to the bike.

As you can see, I'm pretty screwed and out of ideas.

@Bao: Thanks for replying! I clean my bike seat using a cloth after it rains also but I stash it in my box right after. I think it's probably a stupid problem with my bike too but I just can't seem to find out what is it yet.

Although I am a novice myself with bikes. Just a few thoughts:

Do you use the choke? Does it make any difference?

Could it be an issue related to the fuel supply like air gap in fuel hose or water in the tank? Issue with the Carburrator? AFR ratio?

I think now that your bike cannot start its the best time to have an expert look at it and diagonise the issue. Because the last time you took it to UM they couldn't have reproduced the issue. So even though you waste money on towing charges its still worth it for the peace of mind.

Was it parked under the hot sun? If it is, you try parking under the shade for a while, then try to start it again. Might help.

My baby can't stand the heat of Singapore sometimes.

Same too. Sometimes mine can start but can feel the lack of power. Like struggle to breath and then die off... Subsequently, cannot wake up unless I let him rest for 5 mins under a shade.

I think you must also see your physical build too. For me I am too big for wave. I think if I am riding a wave, it will downgrade to Honda "flow". If you are looking at honda, maybe can try the CBF 150 too? Heard that parts easily accessible.

@revhappy: According to the mech at UM, my bike has no choke installed. I don't know how is that supposed to work but yea, basically I don't exactly have a choke.

@haktek: You know, could it be my spark plug was wet or something, then whenever I left it by itself for a period of time then it miraculously can start again, because the spark plug dried itself? Is that even a possible theory? Then maybe because I parked underground the past 2 days at Esplanade, the air a bit still la so maybe the spark plug couldn't dry?

@speedaddict: Nope dude. It died both in hot weather and rainy days. And also started in hot weather and rainy days as well, so I doubt weather plays that much of a part.

Hi guys, got a newbie qns to ask about our pliot lamp. May I know what are the bulbs used for our pliot lamp and can they be used in the meters and signal lights? Becoz I recalled last time when I go and change my lights in UM, the bulbs look the same.

bro u cant underestimate the spark... u see mine i park at shelter that time also the same... because the patrol dried up it self fast but the thick carbon sticking inside the spark cause the plug to be still wet... so but thurs if u were to change the spark... it should not have a problem then it lies with the carb.... u see a cold start bike is realy pain in the ass... but right skill will be eazy to troubleshoot it.. if a the first time u had a hard time to start but a period of time i able to start whele it means the spark are dry and the afr are in a right ratio...

if i were u... i would check from head to toe... means u check the intake, then the carb, then the spark, then start... the last part dont need to borther much... its like breathing... inhale then exhale... so learn more about your bike...
