Sightings Report!

*blush* Quite unsafe to approach me on the road. I've the mentality of a guided missile when not in convoy mode. Everything else is a target lmao.

Oh and officially my bike is forced to run on 98 fuel only. Otherwise, predetonation. It's not a "low compression ah pek engine" :D

Well...I spotted you when I'm on the bus! :cheeky:

Yesterday went to find Chong and he helped me wash my bike's carb, now it starts easier.

Anyway...how do you know when your bike is overheated?

Your feet start roasting. I know, cos I used to run my engine lean. Which means, more horsepower, awesome sound, but your feet start getting hot. it's even more fun when you're riding in heavy rain/flood, cos you get hot water in your shoes!

Another indicator is when you stop the bike, sniff around the right side engine casing and you'll detect burning smells from the starter cable's insulator.

Thankfully my engine didn't explode from all the experimentation. Pity the 'bollywood outing group' weren't patient enough to witness the birth of the $0 vacuum-assisted induction Phantom :D

Anyways to stop overheating, either ride slowly or tune the mixture slightly richer. By say, 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Won't be so hot now.

Posted

I can rest the weekend knowing that I got my fuel mixture optimised to 1/16 of a turn :D Next mechanical upgrade would be the braking system.

or when u come to a red light..the bike stalls..

Not tempting fate, but on stock config the bike shouldn't have any overheating issues; it's a very rugged design. It's also normal to have higher than normal temperatures during the first 1000km of an overhaul. If piston rings, block etc was replaced, then the parts need to be run-in again, which is a incredibly fun process (if you don't dare to rev it the engine never develops full power!)

After Chong helped me washed my carb, I'm not sure if he tuned it back to lean. :cheeky:

Looks like another clinic session for you. It's a bit difficult to say how to tell richness from leanness on a forum post!

he refuse to do mine..saying nothing wrong..dont touch that

L J

..

There is some wisdom in that. Carbs are nasty little things that will refuse to run your engine at all if you don't know what you're adjusting! For that reason it's also a powerful tuning tool.

No EFI bike gives you a one-screw option between horsepower and economy. Although if the internal jetting, slides, etc are all messed up you do need skilled labour...

"Carmen's Revenge" Mark II

Experiments to boost hot weather efficiency. Engineering ideas from the history books :D

1. Fuel-Air Intercooler

  • Engines performs best at night and in rain conditions; lower environment temperature means denser fuel-air charge
  • Engines also rely on incoming fuel-air charge for cooling purposes
  • So, for hot days I want a bolt-on device to take heat away from the carburettor.
  • NOT safe to leave overnight as the heat exchanger assembly attracts condensation.

Parts required:

Computer heatsinks

Cable ties

Kopitiam engineering

2. Water-assisted cooling

  • A speeding fish lorry exceeding (100kph) spraying water all over Admiralty Road created a 50 metre long mist trail that I rode home; I could run the engine as hard as I wanted to without overheating
  • The idea is to dispense a light spray of water onto the cylinder block for limited cooling over 2 minutes
  • This water cooling system is to be used at speed and in hot weather
  • Or to make excessive noise/steam!
  • NOT to be used for rapid/flash-cooling which can cause block to crack!
  • Higher spec Subaru Imprezas have such a system to spray water over the intercooler.

Parts:

2x 500ml bottles

Plastic tubing

4-6x T-joints for plastic tubing (2 regulators, 2 on-off)

Maybe a battery operated air pump from Dr Koh's pneumatic-assist oiler!

In that case, a 3-to-1 joint with centre pressure line and side gravity feeds from "injector tanks" :p Pressure assist will enable a mist of water, which is more efficient for uniform cooling of the cylinder block.

3. Water Injection System (ala MW50 of 1944-45 German aircraft)

  • Some eccentric Frenchman designed a 6-stroke engine that injects water INTO the cylinder for cooling and additional power
  • In 1944, the German aircraft industry developed the MW50 methanol-water injection device that injected a methanol and water solution into the fuel-air charge
  • The idea was to retard detonation of the fuel under pressure and high temperatures (and also increasing cooling), thereby allowing significantly higher boost pressures to be run. Daimer Benz V-12s started produced over 2000hp for 5 minute bursts (originally 1200 or so hp), by war's end
  • You cannot pour water into the fuel tank, obviously, due to differing density.
  • However, I could evaporate the water into the carb venturi. This will give the desired effect of cooling.
  • The idea is to evaporate a small amount of water into the fuel-air mixture for cooling purposes, which will be expelled as water vapour into the exhaust.
  • System is as again only intended for high temperature ops. Water in stopped engine = NOT good.

Parts:

More plastic tubes

Inlet into airbox/carb AFTER air filter

Another 500ml bottle.

Today's clinic we discussed:

4. Victorian Steam Engine Instrumentation

Temperature gauge? No problem - Oven thermometers placed on the engine cover, block and a normal thermometer on the windshield. Allows me to monitor running temps / efficiency vs ambient temperature. And when to turn on the water injection? :D

Only issue is ensuring the thermometers don't go flying everywhere when I do a F16 style cornering maneuver.

5. Vacuum operated chain oiler. Karang guni horn minus the horn part, some tubes and 19th Century tea parlour engineering. $2 chain oiler!

6. Design ezzyoiler for Daystar...

7. Basket weaving with steel wires... lmao

29-6.

Water Injection device is operational.

Overheating in 35 degree heat? Spent 30 minutes in a jam and the engine doesn't want to go above 80 and idles excessively high? [Piston engines hate hot fuel-air charge. Reduced thermal efficiency and power]

Activate the water injection system for an instant boost back to 100+kph and a sweet running cool engine :D

The fuel air charge also becomes denser upon cooling and this sucks in more air into the intake manifold (and I get a loud turbo sound from the secondary intake every time I open er up :3)

I'm stealing all of Dr Koh's knowledge :D

Oh yeah, after meeting the Steed and Daystar last night my bike is very happy today. No vibrations at all at 100 lmao so no need water injection. Passive supercharging ftw

Bro, it's keeping the flame burning! Think Dr Koh is happy that the knowledge can be spread further and faster with the 2 of you! Which equates to more Ezzy-oiler user too! Hehehe...

Don't do it to others what you don't want others to do to you! God bless!

Is it the underground carpark with the entrance located at the steep slope area?

I don't know if I remember correctly.:cheeky:

The security guard keep warn me against entering the underground car park the last time I went. :sian:

2 days consecutively got trapped under rain...no shoes to wear...:(

Press starter only comes out the tacking sound.

Call her dad to help...he say battery flat help me push start bike then I rode home.

Do I need to charge my battery? Clinic still got battery charging service?

Will be attending clinic if my bike can start tomorrow. :o

Happened to me just now - push start is the solution. Be sure to turn off everything including remove the cashcard. The damned IU does suck power when supposed to be "off"!

I was thinking carb flooding was an issue too. Turn off fuel line immediately after turning off the engine.
