Dear all,

I have heard several accounts from friends n bikers who had skidded in the past.

The common thing I hear is that right after a skid, the bike engine will fail to start up and the battery dies, even when the ignition button is pressed. But, if you wait for a few mins, the bike can be started.

Any mechanics/ engineers know the reasons for this temporary 'death' of the battery and ignition? I am curious about the mechanical aspects. Thanks!

The engine is flooded (carb bikes only) when the bike drops. After a few minutes, the petrol in the cylinder evaporates, and it starts normally.

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

other than skidding wat would cause this "overflow"? say if you pump the starter lever too many times will it overflow too? or not turning off the carb when not in use? any other reasons for the overflow?

Also if you're using wet batteries it may overflow due to the fall. since the caps are actually leak proof. The impact may also damage some crucial parts on the bike.

Unlucky 2-strokers might also foul their plugs (with 2T) if they attempt too much to start the carb-flooded bike after a drop.

So it's best to take a short break and recover.

Some bikes have a sensor (like what mordecai1968 said) usually at the ignition module that would automatically kill the engine when the bike drops. You would be able to start after that.

No idea how the petrol can get into the cylinder and flood it but that might also be the case.

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

What a close fren told me is that his bike's battery died after he dropped it. Meaning, when he turn the ignition key, the neutral light and head lights do not "light" up.

But after a few mins, the battery revives again.

bro, i riding sp. Bike tilting to the right badly so no choice slowly put the bike down on the ground cuz no strength to counter. After a few minutes, pick up bike. Bike cant start. After 1 hr, still cant start. When pick up bike, got some petrol on ground. Dont know is leakage or what cuz when bike on stand, no petrol leak. So how?
