Hi guys. I am thinking of buying GPS for my bike but on a budget. I am looking at Nokia 5230 - would cost me about $48 with sigh with plan. But the question is if it would be suitable mounting on my bike? Would the software would good? Is it easy to use? If suddenly rain how? All this issues make me think if buying a GPS specific liike Nuvi 500 would be better.

Any views?

as stated in JK web.. 499.. 2 cradle... garmin scooter mount and RAM-mount with DC cable (which i havent receive yet as no stock)

if u do not want power cable.. RAM-mount only package is 439$.. so u'd need cigg socket to plug in car DC charger.

Other brands.. seriously.. can't match up to Garmin. I was contemplating to get other brands also, which uses other maps and formats.

Gave it a good research, and in the end still stick with Garmin. Bought the Zumo 600 for piece of mind. Never regretted.

Have you done your homework before saying that there are other better brands besides Garmin?

Malsing, malfree, papago etc... these things you need to know. Garmin provides map for many other places than just SG/Msia/Thai.

Garmin does not play mp3? Mine is able to. A few models of Garmin can play mp3. But that's really something not important in purchasing a GPS unit. U r better off with a standalone mp3 player.

I advise you to get a waterproof Garmin unit. Bigger screen would be a plus.

My 2nd advice would be for you to read through this thread from beginning. All your queries would surely be answered.

Like someone already mentioned, these China made GPS running on cracked version of Window Mobile OS. These GPS has the capability of running multi format maps from Mapking to MFM, to MFM(for Papago) etc. To run Garmin format map, these GPS are using cracked version Garmin Mobile XT software.

Such GPS may be rich in features and functionality, but it can never match a Garmin or Papago GPS, in it's hardware, and software.

Most of the complaints on these GPS are slow routing calculations and poor response of the touch screen. In term of speed, these GPS will never be able to match the processing speed of a Garmin because of it's OS. This is one of the reason why MFM created a lite version map to reduce the lag when running on handphone. Anoither complaint is the short battery endurance.

On their claim of waterproofing, what's their IP rating ? Can they do this ?

GMaptool to combine the maps? Have u downloaded it? Mapsource is just as important.

For Shahrul, if he just wanna find out if its useful having a GPS on a bike, why not start off with a cheap, 2nd-hand 205W? That's how i started off, and then i realise that a GPS can be very useful overseas. Sold the 205W and bought the 660. 205W is not waterproof anyway, but u can buy the waterproof casing.

A GPS is not required for local riding....
