Hi all experts out there!

I'm a p-plate rider, riding a KRR. Sometimes I'm being tailgated very near by cars, lorries, etc. so I heard that lane-splitting is a safe way for getting myself out of danger.

I would like to hear all of your advices! Thanks!

lane-splitting is both good n dangerous...its good if ur riding straight with no wobbling...but it is dangerous if ur wobbling wats more if a car trying to overtake u n at the same time u wobble...

n if u see a big vehicle e.g lorry gangster or bus...plz plz dun split beside them...

1stly the ar big...they wont see u

2ndly the fricton wind cause by them will blow ur bike to the other lane...

so the best is...there ar no best actually...u will learn throu exprience... no worries...

n dun be pressurize by being tailgated...juz change lane n let them overtake u...

juz my 2cent worth...

yup.. lane spilt lorries and buses is a "NONO"

always lane split a car only.. but when the lights started to turn green again, pls be reminded to get in lane again. imagine the cars beside your left and right are moving. and u'r in the centre of them.

Not to mention that vehicle in front may not be able to see you coming at all because lorry blocking the view... until it's too late

And sometimes cars see lorry behind and try to change lane in front of lorry cause they think lorry very slow one, then suddenly because of the reason above out of nowhere come a bike... :help:

Ya, sometimes I see some poor bike kena ping pong by car, or worst lorry... luckily no accident.

If kena tailgated then change lane lor. If it is a jam and cannot change lane, the car behind is an idiot anyway, give yourself a bit more space in front and flash brake a bit earlier before you stop, anyway if he hits you he needs to pay you, and at such slow speeds you wont be too badly messed up, probably just get up scold driver exchange particulars only

keep to +/- 20km rule - if traffic ard u @ 50km/hr, dun go @ 80-90km/hr! 60-70 will be much safer.

Also, us small bikes brakes not as good.

when passing by big vehicles, take note sure got azzhozz try to change lane w/o checking blindspot. Reason coz they think big vehicle behind me, no one will try to eat in. Also coz they cant see what's behind the big vehicle.

If u r being tailgated, the best is to have more space in front, so if need to e brake u wun become juice.

Juz my 0.02.. :)

My advise is if they are tailgating you, Check if you are actually road hogging. I know you are scared but just dun care and keep your mind focused in the road ahead or let them pass or get off the right most lane.

Best is just to give way bro...its hard to some at times but for me i think of it as ladies first...besides, i rather reach my destination safely...:cheeky:

If la, lets just say u are at the furthest left lane and other vehicles are tailgating...maybe u can put in abit more throttle, abit only, or u can just maintain the speed limit of the road..u are not in the wrong And always remember to be in the centre of the lane that u are in......:thumb:

1. Always remain in a low gear. At the beginning of your bike's torque. In simple terms, just maintain 6-7K rpm on your krr. So when you need to move, you have enough torque to accelerate forward and not lag.

2. Always look in front, the direction you want to go. You're squeezing between two cars? Don't look at any of them when you're in between. Just keep looking at your exit.

3. Maintain throttle in slow and tight speed. Immediate closing and opening throttle will just jerk the bike forward. Use the rear brake if you need to slow down. If you need to squeeze around tight and slow traffic, you can maintain balance by holding down the rear brake while keeping the throttle open.

I dun dare to lane split but just follow some simple rule.

1. Keep on lane 2 or 3. Never travel on lane 1 unless going to do a right turn

2. Always travel at the center of the lane, otherwise some vehicle will try to squeeze you. I got squeeze by lorry, SUV, van b4... So I had learned my lesson already.

3. If got hign beam or horn, move to the next left lane. Usually vehicle behind you will not try to be funny to horn or highbeam when you are at the 3rd lane.

Most importantly, ride with a relac mindset, dun gan chiong. Remember, we got pay road tax, so we have the right to travel on the center of the lane, not in between 2 lanes to endanger ourselves. :cheeky:

One way to learn is it see how others do it.

I ride a Phantom, so when I first started squeezing, I did it by following another Phantom.

The idea is if he is riding the same bike as me and he can go through, I should logically be able to go through too.

Few things to take note.

1. Don't bang car mirrors. When you near a mirror, slow down, make sure will not bang then go.

2. Check that the cars are not turning. Look at the tires.

3. If a car is very very near the line, but did not signal. He is @#$% going to turning. The Hell with the signal! He will turn! Be careful.

4. If there is a space on either side of the road infront of you during a jam, stupid drivers will try to do abrupt lane change, to go into that slot. Be ready to E-brake. Sometimes they can lane change 1/2 way stop on the dotted line blocking both lanes, as well as the dotted line we are so fond of travelling on.

5. Lastly when squeezing inbetween 2 big vehicles eg: Lorry/ Army tonner. Be prepared for a sideway wind blast. At high speeds 90km/hr and above, it will feel like someone is pushing you sideways, be prepared for the push.

when doing lane splitting, like what one forumer here said, don lane split between lorries and buses, it absolutely true ...

Moreover, get urself a Flamm or Hella, whatever air horn ..etc..

While doing lane splitting, prepare urself for the brakes, clutch and down gear if possible, and perhaps keep ur left thumb on the horn button ..... IF the jam is damn hectic, adjust ur speed accordingly and on high beam.. it works well if ur headlight is a HID .... drivers will take note of ur coming ...

It doesnt matter what brakes ure using actually ... With proper techniques im sure u can brake effectively ...

i rephrase what i mean - us 2B bikes are in more danger when we need to ebrake, however effectively, simply coz of slimmer tires.

thus when u see bigger classes bike lane splitting at high speeds, doesn't mean u "can" too!

Lastly, I try not to lanesplit BBO (Big Black Objects) coz i do not want it to be my last! :cheeky:

If 2 big vehicles in front of me ald going at 70-80 (prob that explains y we need to >90 to lanesplit), i rather NOT lanesplit - wait for a better opportunity?

bro... lane split prevents accidents but also will invite accidents or stupid drivers who refuse to give way and let you thru... when they see you riding and going to squeeze thru, they will purposely move their car abit to the lane that you are going to squeeze thus "might" cause a accident...

So.. we lane split when the car infront jam brake... to avoid direct crush... but you must be ensure that you have check right or left lane around 30 seconds earlier that no cars is coming.. that's how we prevent accidents...

anyway, feel free to come to KR thread for more informations.. :)

Normally i will lane split if the jam is damn bad, car moving very slow(30-50km/h), but mostly i will just keep in my lane. One thing i do when i am in my lane on a expressway i will try to keep to my left side of the lane just in case the front car jam brake and i can't ebrake in time i still can squeeze inbetween car. Lastly don't be pressure to lane splitting, in time to come through experience you will know when you should lane split...
