996 advertised for 17.9k, a 996 SPS for abt 19.8km, a 916 for abt 14k.

>>2) recommend mileage for valve adjustment? at wat cost for the service >>including the shims and labour charge.. how about timing belt and tensioner?

Getting my valve adjustment done at 40,000km soon.

Michael Chong from Kallang quoted $250 but most probably I'll get mine done at

Minerva which should cost more.

Pair of timing belts costs abt $140, change intervals varies, manual says 20,000km change or 2 year whichever first. Some change at 10,000km.

>>3) servicing of injectors.. how frequent and at wat cost?

Have got no idea but I use fuel injector cleaner. (STP, FP60) which I hope it helps.

Injectors are pretty easy to take out, but dunno whether can be dismantled or not.

Read somewhere in this forum use ultrasonic cleaning.

>> 4) 996 version is from the year 2000 to 2001?

Can't really recall from which year but I think 996 was introduced in 1999.

>>5) any other form of servicing that is a killer besides the valve valve adjustment?

I think once the valve system is bedded in, you do not need that much of any adjustment. Was told that normally, for valve adjustment, just open and check whether need to adjust and very often, not adjusted.

I think the "killer" is the timing belt change at every 20,000km intervals or sooner

depending on the condition of the belts.

And also the clutch system, being dry clutch and that is if you can bear with the

noise(it will grow louder and louder as the wear and tear grows)

Stock steel basket costs abt $250. Clutch plates pack abt $250 as well I think.

Other than the timing belts and clutch system, everything is relatively as per normal bike maintainance. (engine oil, brake systems, coolant etc etc)

Hope the above info helps.

Perhaps more 916/996/998/999 owners can feedback as well. :cheer:

I think the price of the cluch plates has gone up since... minerva selling the standard plates at $4XX and the sintered ones at $5XX...need to check on this

They generally last for about 15k B4 need replacing

That's a very interesting idea.....any modifications needed to throw in that battery??? I wanted a smaller dry cell when my battery screwed up last yr (I pushed from the industrial near Kallang Bahru swimming pool to Minerva Workshop and almost dropped my bike inside the shop....lucikily Eugene helped me support the bike. I'm too tired already), but need to mod the battery bracket, so I opt for the OEM YUASA wet cell :sian: Boring, once in a month have to check battery water.... :cheeky:

Gold Wing uses a wet or dry cell??? Why is it better than the stock Yuasa??

You and I same same bike.....I'm very interested, kekeke.

Hey bro! How's your twins? Hahaha, yesterday went to the Giant at

Malaysia to top up a dozen of NAN at 409RM and a few packs of

monster pack dryper worths 500RM, hope it can last a few months!

Oh. honestly i bought the 748 from a very nice owner who had gave

me a 12V battery charger! In fact nowaday i m so frequent on oversea

buz trip that i left the 748 in care with the previous owner. Initally i

had already suspect there is some charging problem.....

The "Gold Wing" type battery require no modification on the battery

bracket! My previous battery measured LxBxH. The diff is the B is slightly

longer but the allowance between the fairing allow the batt to fit

in nicely! I did change a new batt after i take over the bike, but after

3.5mths it worn out. Gave the shop a good screw, thus they recommand

me to the "GW-Type" :thumb:

It cost abt +/- $80 more for the bigger one, but it definately worth the

buck for a long run! I also did a re-routing of the electrical cables. For

the input (charging) and output (headlight etc) to and fro from the recifier

with a thermal resistance cables upz to 200degree about $70.

Also improve all grounding cables to the thicker higer current type, cost

about $80. The revamp of the grounding cable took about 3 days. I also

threw in a voltmeter at the cockpit to monitor the charging cycles. Now

it is as reliable as my F4i. I usually gentlely rev the bike for 20sec before

parking to ensure the batt have enuff juice to kick the next time. Sometime

i dun have the time to ride it for more than 3wks. A bit worry at first, but it

did not disappoint mi.

Hope my 2cts help. In any case if u decide to change the batt, let , mi know

i can bring u to the shop n fight a better price for ya. But i will be free after

20 Feb.

If it's any sign of things to come, let's hope it's a good year for the Italian manufacturer.

Can't wait for another MotoGP win right in Japan! :cheer:

BTW, bought a set of Ducati Performance alum clutch plates for abt $330.

I think ebay/online for a barnett set would be a better choice. US150 + additional shipping, still cheaper and more choice for products and services.....

Any luck getting the bike to start?

Will try to see whether sparks from the plug too.

And grounding is proper.

Use the choke lever or throttle a bit when starting from cold.

Maybe also could be a split fuel line hose from the fuel pump which is inside

the fuel tank.

Er... Send to bike shop?

my batt still at shop... no time to go down n get it... hope the problem is not 1 of those u mention...

Really cool. Don't think possible to go with a underneath seat exhaust look for my ST4 without going single-sided swing-arm and minimal work/fuss.

I think you must be pleased with the outcome.

Whom you got in touch with to do all the welding/fabricating?

Was thinking of making my exhaust 2 into 1.....

Michael @ Kallang Cycle is the man. Without his help, expertise & experience, this project would not have got off the ground. The bike would have remain a "pipe" dream - a vision in my head. He installed the front, rear end and did the engine work. I did the fabrication of the exhaust system and the nitty-gritty detailed work. He pointed me to the right people for welding and engineering work - they are all located near Kallang Cycle. Mike can pull off any mod when he puts his mind to it. You just have to be a "little" patient with him. Afterall, he is just a one-man show and he needs to pay the rent.

Yes, I am rather pleased with the outcome, especially when the bike is greatly appreciated @ http://www.ducatimonster.org

hi motocafe,

regarding your monster project, you powercoated the entire engine? would the powder coat withstand the heat from the engine? cos i heard from some shops that most paints would not be able to withstand the high heat of the engine..

hear from you soon :cheeky:

The answer is no and yes.

No, the powdercoat that I have done will probably not last because of the incomplete prep done before sending in. Every piece needs to be stripped to bare metal - that was not achieved. However, I am still pleased with the outcome as the engine's original paintwork (powdercoated, BTW) was in really bad condition.

"i heard from some shops that most paints would not be able to withstand the high heat of the engine."

I think they are referring to the normal solvent-based paint not powdercoating. Yes, powdercoating will work if you prep the parts thoroughly. Engine heat is not an issue as the powdercoated part needs to be heated to 325-375°F @ 12-20 minutes for curing anyway.

so would it be possible to leave the bike at K. Cycle and then let them do the stripping of the original paint? or do we have to do it ourselves then send to him to pass to the powder coaters?

Eh, I didn't do the powdercoating thru Mike. The powdercoating was done thru M-Technik @ Paya Ubi Ind Park. The problem was I couldn't find anyone willing to sandblast the parts. So, I had to do it myself - it's a lot of work[/u].

I understand that there's a guy who will do the whole process, i.e. strip the paint and send it for powdercoating. Contact below:

I am one of the "old timers" - I am on the left in the last picture. Small world!

Pepewee now working in HK. Saw him last year when He came back for CNY. Time flies...

After PK went to HK, haven't seen him since! Though remembering him saying no dirt bike scene in HK??? Got his contact?

Bumped into Botak Jason once in a while.

Told me most of the group retire from dirt riding liao, married married, or exit permit not approve....

Me still riding dirt but at the frequency of like once every 2 months.... not like

last time, once per week.

Wow... tat was back in 2001!!!

How times fly. :weep:

Actually, that was a BAJA that looked like an XR with small tank & headlight. Sold that abt 3-4 years ago. Now, I ride a DR650 converted to supermotard and the monster which is still not ready yet.

PK gave me his email a while back but I lost it. Perhaps he will be back again this year for CNY. Jason is probably a father by now - haven't seem him since his wedding. Us old timers still meet up once in a while @ Jalan Besar but nobody is riding trial nowadays. Me, 2 kids schooling - no more time... Still love bikes - now more into customising.

Great to hear that you are still riding dirt. What bikes do you have currently - ST4?

RedRocket can help you to arrange that :D

Will only be back after the 19th on Mar. If somehow gathering shifted, I'll try to come, provided some fellas in this thread go too.

Good info, bro.....Thanks. But an OEM Yuasa already cost me $90 from the dealer, so dun tell me the GoldWing type is gonna be $170 roughly??? :giddy:

I did my own grounding, that's all....nothing else, so far battery still good.

Anyways, my twins are good.....Both the V twin and the daughters. Been messing around with them with various brands of milk powder to test water, ha ha....I have no car to go into JB, so could not get milk powder from Giants.

Unless next time you go, you help me bring back some??? Ha ha ha....

Back to the bike, so far I have disconnected the battery for a month, but when I connect it back, it fired like the way it should. I know I have a strong battery still.

Thanks for your info. Appreciate that. Hope the GW battery not so expensive like $170......dry cell or wet???
