Really upset over this cause this problem didn't exist before top overhaul.

As new parts need to be worn in after an overhaul, carb settings may fluctuate until the run-in process is fully complete. This is random from bike to bike.

As for not starting at all until idling is increased, please note that some carb settings require the use of a choke lever which is located on the left side of the engine, beside the ignition.

Pull choke, start, and close choke as soon as the motor is able to self sustain combustion.

If problem persists after 1000km, go back to Ah Chong. Same for any major problems like well, excessive mechanical noise. But important for diagnosis being accurate is to ride the thing - most of the time these funny things disappear by themselves as parts wear in and oil film develops on the parts to lubricate and protect them.

Ps. An engine that starts too easily on the first crank is one that is running very lean. May create other issues :)

Or give me a call this evening and I'll drop by to see if I can turn one screw here and make the bike run properly

I just now went to start my bike.

Totally cannot start at all unless I tune up the idle speed.

Really need visit the clinic this week to get help from you guys. :(

dun b upset bro. small hiccup... better to go over to planet to make sure everything is rectified... e travel distance is a small price to pay for a service u know u wont get cheated by... :) i live wdl... any small problem also i will travel all e way just to get it checked... alot of times, there's no problem at all... haha... :)

if u totally cannot start, call ah chong... he can give u step by step instructions to rectify ur problem... totally cannot, he will advice u to get it towed over n i doubt he will charge u, cause he just overhauled for u, got guarantee one u know... haha... :)

just dun b afraid to call him, no matter u think its minor or what, he will help one... :)

Using the choke to start up bike?

I heard choke on for long periods would have problem...so don't really dare to touch the choke. :o

Would try tuning it to a normal idling sound and start with choke to see if it works. Rest of the problem leave for this sat clinic~ :)

a word of fairness, if you nv overhaul . u may required to pay even more when time passes.

uncle chong might tune ur idle speed lower to save ur petrol $. but on ur side u dun mind spend petrol, hence u will not appreciate it...

there might be other factors involve thou, wet spark plug, weak batt etc. which result ur bike unable to start.

besides jurong area been chilling these 2days....

no offence vashie. :)

It's safe to open the choke to start the engine, but don't ride with it or you'll risk flooding the carb, which is always bad :)

Standard operating procedure is to use the choke only when necessary if starting is difficult.. such as for a 2 stroke on a very cold morning. My Yamaha didn't have a hand-adjustable idling screw so I would manually control the warmup idling by hand.

No need to do that on a cruiser!

I'll say again that running in, by tradition, involves getting over such minor issues by just riding the bike. New parts need to work in synch with each other, piston rings need to expand to generate max compression, and carb settings tend to stabilise in time.

Posted

Ah chong initially set my idle too high, got a shock from the revving sound continuing even when I close throttle so I went back ask him tune again. :o

It didn't rain yesterday, and I went to pump petrol few hours after I came back from planet.

No offence taken...I'm really new to bikes so I don't mind hearing more input regarding the issue. :)

.... such unpredictability is why I switched to customs/cruisers over the usual plastic toys that sound like kitchen appliances.

It's an invitation to gain an understanding of old-school engineering :)

The reward is after a while you know enough to make a war veteran like this run beautifully :3

i am second to kaylan's "getting over such minor issues by just riding the bike" hehe:cool:

but again IMO what make uncle chong popular is "he care for biker's pocket via his trustworthy professionalism" which ppl recommand each other in SBF.

(off topic) i dunno how accurate is this, the last time i oso did choke starts when i have difficulty starting up.when i do weekly washing i realise the engine pipe turn color...

Posted

Pipe discolouration is due to overheating; I would inspect the carb settings. Richen the mixture a bit to lower operating temps, and oh, lower the idling a bit if possible.

And agreed on Chong.. when I didn't dare to touch the bike much less fix anything, he solved my carb issues with just one test ride in the morning.

So long as you're on stock components they should not give excessive trouble, since stock settings were proven in factory testing. If you ever poked at your carb my advice is limit yourself to idle and mixture setting optimisation. They don't have to be placed in an exposed area of the engine but they are, for a reason!

Once you start messing with slides, needles, jets, pilots, it's a world of massive complexity and possibly, more loss than gain.

Don't need a racing carb on this bike to go fast. Well you could get a racing carb but exhaust system, cams, intake etc would need to be optimised to make use of the carb's potential. And at the end of it I'll know to get a super4 to race instead lol.

And finally - some people have rejetted and retuned their carbs after an overhaul because it just wasn't running right. After 3000km the stock carb settings were used and it ran perfect. If vashie's stallion still requires the choke on Saturday it's mixture tuning time.

There's a "Bayshore Rd" exit along the ECP. Can find the address in the clinic thread :3 Oh and update your attendance there lol.

Will post a map here later.

You got more than a map :3

I went to try starting up my bike in the evening just now.

With choke on, the bike engine dies after a few second.

Tomorrow morning, I go install crash bars then drop by planet and ask ah chong about it. :(

chances are, idling too low.

tunning problem i guess.

Too high and the engine sound continues when I close throttle to slow down and stop,

too low and it can't be started.

Hard to show the problem too...cus only when engine fully cooled down then it will be hard to start...when engine warmed up, low idling also can start.

I'm just not an engineering type of person...such mechanical problems makes me feel irritated! Never met the problem before, now suddenly appear out of nowhere...kind of miss starting my bike with just a simple push of button. Haha...:o

I was accosted by the insolent rain midway through the KPE but my 95kph-in-rain Metzeler tyres allowed me to slice through a sudden heavy downpour without incident and the long stretch of TPE - KPE - ECP allowed me to dry myself :D

Visibility at one point was less than 50 meters - IFR mode (plane fanatics like me will understand :D)

Well...I was caught in the rain too...and my 10km/h travelling speed didn't help at all!

There was an accident at AYE and I was stuck in the jam...behind a van. :o
