Hi bros,

I've a 2001 R1 for 5 years now and despite the regular oil changes, i haven't really done much servicing and I've been itching to do one hardcore servicing.

Chains and tyres are all new so no concerns over those...

Can the bros here help me think of what i may need to do?

As mine is a carb engine, i will most like wash and balance/tune the carbs.

Batt and sparks still in good conditions (about 1 year old).

Engine oil and filter are also due to change.

Wash K&N filters.

Brake pads... if need to.

Coolant flush.

Brake fluid reservoir flush

Maybe install the Dynojet needles. depending on how much cash i have left!

What is this timing chain i hear about once in awhile? how do i know if i need to change that and how much does it costs?

Anything else that may essentially need checking after 5 years?

Because the bike is running smoothly and no problems at all. Power is still there and all.

So i am not very keen on changing too much things to the engine as the saying goes for motor in chinese "ye muo ye tuo!" (the more u touch it, the more problem u will have!)

Please share some of your knowledge with me!

Thanks!!

hi there nice to know that u rode your bike for a long time  yes dont touch your engine is the best as there is no problem with it

as for dynojet, there is no need to unless u install full system and a K&N aftermarket air filter to compliment them would be prefect.

timing chain wise would cost around $350 to change it .... but after several months of riding, the sound will come back again. No need to change unless yours ticks really lound :thumb:

What say u

Open up the fairing and check for any wiring or rubber hoses that touches the hot exhaust.

lolx.. thanks guys..

found the source of the problem..

its some tape on the exhaust..

unable to remove as its melted in already..

took out most of it though..

mech said it will just melt out within one or 2 days.

what do you mean by full system? do you mean the exhaust system?

As for ticking... i dun really hear any of that sound though. so maybe i am spared from spending that $350

yes i mean the exhaust  .... but even if u install the dynojet without the full system u will still feel the difference ... just that it goes better with the full system ....

and for the ticking sound, yes its normal for every class 2 yamaha bikes from R6 to R1 to FJR1300 unless yours can be heard miles away

oh definitely i would be interested to join in, provided i can join in and no last minute crop up like the previous 2 outings ..... But those living in the north and west would be in a disadvantage position ....

if i am not wrong, the correct way of measuring the engine oil level is when the engine is cold. Then check the level from there.

Did you change the oil filter also? If yes then the correct volume should be 3.5L

It is probably better to rotate the meet location so that it is fair to all.

Yamaha recommends to let the engine warmed up for a while, then switch off the bike and let the oil settle then check the oil level

According to the user manual of 07R1, 2.9L w/o filter change, 3.1L with filter change. So 3L should be ok.
