Thinking of upgrading my workhorse... and wondering if I should pay the extra for an ABS bike.

Would like to ask people who have ridden ABS bikes before, how useful is ABS and are there any disadvantages? Thanks.

boring rider. with a boring bike.

On this topic I'm thinking factory-equipped ABS would be superior to afternarket ABS, which, referring to Phantom owners who tried these, are useless.

Reason being, an example superbike from a reputed manufacturer like Honda has benefited from millions of dollars of RnD, so it will work no matter what. The aftermarket so-called ABS systems managed only to increase the bikes' stopping distance significantly.

I have personally no experience with ABS equipped motorcycles but having been street racing for as long as I got my license, I don't think I'd want some computer taking over my braking systems at the limit. Riding at typical legal speeds, it's more than effective enough to "feather" (i.e., tap) the brakes to prevent wheel-lock if you sense the wheel losing traction.

But if you have a high performance bike ABS can work wonders because things "tend to happen faster than the eye can see".

The above feedback is purely one-sided, of course - so I await some experienced riders who have had the luxury of riding an ABS-equipped bike.

Yo bro, get a bike with ABS.

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=278132

Well, my ABS equipped bike cost a few hundred more but its worth every single cent.

Last month, a lorry swerve into my lane and the road is wet after the rains.

Happened so fast, so I just grabbed the brakes. The ABS activated and pulsed through the brake levers.

Without the ABS, most probably the wheels would have locked and skidded and what happens next is up to god already.

I am just your average joe with average joe riding 'skills'. All those e-brake procedures just went out of the window that day.

When you are talking about microseconds and metres to spare between an impact between lorry and a motorcycle on wet roads, those tapping of brakes and proper e brake procedure did not come to the mind at that instant.

ABS is standard feature for cars and now that this safety aid is becoming more common for bikes, I do not see any reason not to get a bike with ABS.

The few hundreds more you spent could one day save you thousands, or even more...

So...just buy a bike with ABS. You cant go wrong.

:)

follow condom logic, have it but dont need it, than need it and don't have it.

paying that extra few hundred for better braking performance in emergencies is worth it, furthermore, your life is priceless.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

I have it on my bike, and it activated once in an emergency stop. So used only once in 3 years, but that once is good enough for me.

Up till now, there is no such thing as aftermarket ABS for cars and for bikes.

those 'add-ons' phantom riders have installed shouldn't be even called ABS. maybe it is, but it probably stands for Ample of Bull SH1t.

cannot stoppie is an unwanted side effect? :cheeky:

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

I had ABS on my VFR and I'd say that it is worth every cent paid. You have more confidence during braking especially in wet weather. Saved me once (or a couple of times), significantly when I was on my way to KL. The car in front of me crashed and I applied my brakes hard. The pulsing on the handlebars indicated that the ABS was in full motion and it prevented me from fishtailing, especially at the speed I was traveling.

Cons? Unless you're a track freak, I doubt you'd be complaining about it. Most racers swear off ABS because of the lack of feedback from the brakes. And no stoppie too.

And oh, I've never heard of aftermarket ABS... Doesn't exist.
