[Discussion] What do you hate about riding?

Lol it's quite an interesting decision to ride fast or ride like ah pek.

Fast -

Move decisively, avoid dangerous zones and "don't know what is blind spot" drivers actively. Sometimes it's better to lane split in advance to get past these idiots, than to be sandwiched by them!

However, other road users get jealous about the bike always being in front and show their worst attitude (the one that says their car must always be the one in front, bikes must ride at 70kph only).

Ah Pek -

Slow, careful, don't lane split, always double check mirrors, triple check blind spot, some people will give way to you but...

The rest of them mei yo jia jiao folks see the 2-3 car length safety zone ahead of you and cut in without signalling. Every time without fail. Especially if you're the last one in a filtering queue.

It also takes forever to get anywhere. Got stuck in a 3 hour jam once.

In a way, Ah Pek mode exposes the rider to far more danger, than one who decisively adapts to traffic and overtakes decisively.

I have to agree that riding very slowly is more dangerous..I drive more than I ride and to me, slow riders (I mean very slow like 40-50kmh) are like cyclists..even if they are on the left most lane. I know they are being safe but they are so vulnerable...it only takes a slight bump from an impatient driver to know them down...

Sometimes I see some riders...they are like daydreaming...riding slowly and either looking around and maybe just enjoying the slow ride..totally oblivious to the zooming traffic around them :slapforehead:

when i have to carry costly and fragile item and have the heart in the mouth for the whole ride, if bike goes down, everything total loss

when i am with 2 friend and all need to go to the same location but 2 friend no transport

when i kena fine

when i need to pay for coe and rubbish

boring rider. with a boring bike.

Are you still riding? :cheeky:

I love riding but I think Singapore is just a very bad place to ride - inconsiderate drivers, jams, very unpredictable weather...either it rains and you get wet or its just too hot and you get all sweaty...

Of cos, my workplace is only 5-10min ride from my home!

Heh, I've seen some "ah peks" rode a RXK like its a R1, splitting lanes, accelerating. Man, they even put my bike to shame (I'm a poser anyway). Oh well!

Rain, oil slicks, muddy port holes, all the harms that is to a bike.

However, what I am concerned most, is whenever I mount my bike. The road, as the chinese saying goes, "The road is as if a Tiger's mouth".

So many things unpredictable, death may comes anytime, regardless how safe I ride. Of course, you might say its a needless worry but still, being on a bike means you do not have much protection other than your helmet and armour, a impact anything above 50km by a vehicle, means there is a reasonable risk of severe injuries. You are not protected by a layer of steel unlike those cars.

Then again, I love riding, been riding since I was young. So everytime before a ride, I would involuntarily say a little prayer. Riding is always a risk, but that is the risk that I'm sure almost everyone here takes. Don't increase that risk by doing anything dangerous!

I'm a Tutor! Proud to be one!

It's amazing how I made it out of a 1 hour traffic jam earlier this morning without so much as a raised eyebrow. I was like * pat pat* wow good bike. Lol.

Then again I did a lot of DIY stuff to make the thing run as smoothly as it does, without overheating or hogging the road. Thing had absolutely no power at all when I bought it.

note to self - so called alternative routes suck when everyone else and their grandma knows about them.

Moron riders on kapchais that rev alot on traffic lights indicating a race-on.. Racing is on track not SG roads. They emit a bad impression to riders all around..

on a side note, for those who rode 2b before going to class 2 bikes..

do you find yourself lanesplitting slower during urban traffic when you are on a class 2 than on a 2b bike?

i find myself filtering slower because of the amount of ponies under me.. not worth to be throttle happy.. IMO..

Wow i thought i am the only fool to have this kind of thinking to practise my throttle control n braking .. Seem like i have someone with the same concept as me .. Riding in heavy rain is actually very cooling that if yr raincoat did not fail u lah :cheeky:

Some say that I should go to Pasir Gudang and learn all about riding technique but I find that unnecessary.

Riding solo through Neo Tiew is a great exercise of riding skills despite the 70kph speed limit for the purposes you've highlighted.

If we don't get familiar with the bike, and how the bike reacts when maneuvering, we're a sitting duck in an emergency situation (that other motorists may cause, leaving us to save their lives).

From experience, reactions alone are not enough. Prediction is better than cure. Track skills are also largely, irrelevant to street conditions and speeds, a recent kopitiam discussion concluded.

Thus, to be on topic once again -

I hate those riders who lanesplit halfway then tailgate centimeters away from another car or bike when unable to squeeze through.

Either lanesplit decisively or follow in lane!

You get those people who tell me that my "decisive overtaking" is dangerous and paramount to speeding. Didn't they observe me waiting patiently for a 5 car length opening so I can safely join the faster lane without holding up everyone?

Hmm Track to me is a safe place to understand your bike , practise your throttle control n try some drills in a very safe environment ... Maybe due to too much racing by fellow riders , u may have the wrong concept... At track It has no kerb n have run off just in case u enter too hot ...

Its how u look at it .. From wat i had experience having track skills can help u to avoid some accidents due to wrong judgement at unfamiliar roads..

the hot weather is definitely something I hate... scorching hot sun, and I also dont like to lug my helmet everywhere I go. Then also after rain and if you are going out, you have to find a place to put your wet raincoat, then chances are your pants will be wet and somehow its always the bloody groin area that is wet. Bloody embarassing!

I like going to work drenched. I will pretend to look like I'm freezing or something and declare to my colleagues (and bosses) - see I risk my life coming to work every morning...

If I get to volunteer (I'm a good secretary :3) for emergency dispatch mission (we have only so many dispatch riders) then I get to make big show of launching my heavy bomber again mentioning why dispatch missions are paid $20 per run and when I come back related to my many adventures on the road thereby raising morale for my colleagues who are permanently, like, stuck in the office facing a wall.

If only someone invent an aircon jacket haa haa.... :p

Something like this:

wah, i didnt take to the fluid cooling vest, becos i think it may leak. But this one is cool man, it might just work. But what is solid state technology? I hope its just not a car vacum cleaner with the motor put in reverse!

How dare they mention "solid state tech" as special. We're not in the age of vacuum tubes man, all of today's electronics are solid state with the exception of specialised equipment :D

I hate riding behind super fours during the rain. No matter what version, S, PB even the new revo, all will splash water at me. Argh.
