Crazydj, try OGK aeroblade 2, Around your budget. Although I will strongly recommend OGK ff 5.

If helmets have only 2-3 years lifespan, I wonder how people bear to buy helmets which costs few hundred dollars like Shoei. Like waste money.

Just get a few cheap helmets to abuse and throw, less heart pain. :cheeky:

Don't know is the offer still on or not...try trade in helmet get hjc ff for $100?

its not a waste in my opinion, its an investment to keep ur head safe, if money is an issue over safety or things that can be avoided, it only goes to show how much one's head is worth to oneself...There is no guarantee i know but at least make the effort... HJC still got the offer man, its a while stock last promo..maybe can go down and take a look.

I think when they say that helmets have only 2-3 years of lifespan, they are referring to those arai or shoei helmets.

So cheeop ones like mfizz, lab, sumo all should last what, less than a year? Haha.

the life span guide is meant for all helmets man...its no joke when safety is concern, have personally seen many brittle and old helmets split into 2 and broken into ugly shape many times upon accident impact and also a fall from chest level..

omg.. I didnt know that helmets have such short life spans until I come across this thread.

Basically I'm still using an OGK Aeroblade which i bought in 2005 since I got my first bike, and I am still using it now (on daily basis). Like Kalyan, I dont bother to maintain my helmet too. If its drenched in the rain, I will hang it on my bike if I'm parked in a sheltered area. If not sheltered, I will just wipe the exterior and put the helmet in my box. (Sometimes I leave it over night because my carpark is not sheltered, as I never bring my helmets home)

My pillion helmet is a KISS helmet bought from LAB. Should be about 2 years now. There's no rust or any problem, except the side screws getting lose all the time. I guess the screws got lose due to constant vibrations in the box when I leave the helmet in the box when not pillioning anyone.

I'm sure alot of fellow forumers will tell me to replace the helmets because they're too old, and the core would have aged / weakened over time, etc. But hmmm..... no budget to change my ff yet, though I'll be changing my pillion helmet one of these days due to the screws. heh

From Honda's manual:

The motorcycle presents you a challenge to master the machine, a challenge to adventure. You ride through the wind, linked to the road by a vehicle that responds to your commands as no other does...

well if u ride almost everyday, the life span is not short man, u can feel it also..like i state its just a guideline due to weather or terrain exposure...:thumb:

shoei recommends replacing helmets every 3 yrs under normal useage.. my dajiro kato replica is already older then tat.. hahaha.. anyway no issues wif the helmet falling apart.. stil in good condition

on a side note.. i did protect my helmet exterior wif the raceshield protection kit.. so flying rocks n debris cant chip the paintwork

Reading the forums does tempt me to getting one of the cheaper fullface helmets, considering how often and how far I ride each day.

I was in conversation during a recent convoy outing and we compared mileage since we bought our bikes.

Other rider - 1,800km since April

Me - ten thousand

I'm not a dispatcher but I just love to ride at night... with a $15 cashconverter helmet. Doesn't sound right LOL.

Usually I change my Full Face helmet every 2 years....Outside may look good, but the polymer might be degraded.... When u impact is the polymer collapse and act as a absorber.....

SO usually I spend $200+ per 2 years.....I agreed some $500+ helmet have more comfort but are u willing to change them every 2 years....?

Better be safe than sorry.....

wouldnt want to wait for an accident to test if a helmet is good or not.. in my opinion, if a helmet can last 3 years... spending $1 a day on helmet protection (since I ride everyday), thats more than 1k already...

dont be penny wise, pound foolish...

anyway, another thing to take note of... dont save on your pillion's helmet please.. especially if its your wife or gf.. in an accident.. the pillion will fly further than u... u might not think so, but I rather she's more protected than me, as I will be more worried abt her than me in an accident..

oh yah, n for the o-ring rusting.. it might be due to sweat.. maybe the cushion thin out...try to keep it dry.

I got a HJC FF and a cheap GPR open face, both lasted me over 3 years.

I wipe my helmet dry (especially the D-ring area) after dry immediately after it gets wet (rain). I occassionally polish my helmet and visor. For the GPR the cushion bottom black area is starting to flake off my doesn't matters to me since it's only a bit uglier.

Visor wise, do not wipe your visor dry as it will cause scratches.

I have been using the M Fizz Evo II helmet for 4 years, only the D-ring is a little rusty. Used soft 99 to wax it only twice through out the 4 years usage.

the $1 a day thinking? my dad like to refer it as 'salesman talk'. no offense to you, long before i read this when i told him about this breakdown (i was NOT buying a helmet) that's what he told me. haha. but yeah, buy the best helmet your budget allows you to.

i agree on the pillion's helmet. i dun like to see those rider's wearing full face while the pillion only wearing a half face. i got scolded by my own family members when i just got my bike and my gf was wearing half face and shorts.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

salesman talk? if im a salesman, i will try to sell u a $100 helmet at $300 instead of asking u to buy a $500 helmet. hahaha

anyway, u r right.. of cos, in the end, buy the best that allows your budget allows to.

when it comes to biking.. these are my purchase priority.

1) buy a bike

2) make sure bike is all good and well (if buy 2nd hand)

3) invest in safety for self (protective riding gears)

4) invest in bike protection (raceshield, sliders, and stuffs)

5) then, lastly, performance upgrades.

Imho, I believe the safety that a helmet can provide can only go so far. The higher range helmets cost more due to it's weight, ventilation and brand.

"How much you pay for helmet = how much you value your head"

If I were to sell an open face helmet for $400, does it become safer? :?

Not intending to target those people who prefer more expensive brands helmet. :cheeky:

I prefer to get cheaper helmet and change often rather than get expensive helmet and use longer period.

To each it's own...there are pros and cons to expensive and cheap helmets, in the end it's up to individual. If I have money, I would really like to buy those $700+ helmet and change it every year. :o

Wow....so fast gotten the helmet?

Cheap FF helmet > Open face helmet!

It's okay to be tight...will loosen up after repeated use. Mine I don't use often, so every time I finish using it I need to open and close mouth to flex my jaw.

For full face and full face flip up, I try to use balaclava or head liner so that I don't need to wash helmet liner often.

Been using my Shoei J-Force 2 DAILY for 2yrs 5mths now and it's still fine other than worn out cheekpads after 2 years of abuse.I clean my visor almost everyday and NO rust as the Shoei inventors are smart. They use plastic screws so you only need to lube e sides about once every 2 months. At least that's what I did and it has been serving me well... Cheers!

Agreed. There are just so many factors. Price alone CANNOT be used to determine the quality and other aspects of choosing a helmet.

Let's imagine this scenario.

You are a military analyst who is in charge of determining the main assualt rifle of choice to be used in an upcoming conflict that would be fought in a jungle theatre. Field tests have narrowed down the contenders to 3 main assualt rifles.

SAR21

M16

AK47

It cannot be said that the SAR21 should be the best because it is the most expensive, therefore, it is of a higher quality or whatsoever.

------

Same goes with helmets in my opinion, get the RIGHT helmet that suits YOU, YOUR environment and YOUR personal preference.

And yes, i think FULL-FACE should be compared to FULL-FACE and not with a HALF-FACE. Its like comparing a TANK with an APC. Both provide protection, but at much DIFFERENT levels.

PS: Just so you know, i would pick the AK47 in the above fictitious scenario as it is cheap, realiable and has the largest calibre.

We all have our own way of viewing things, let's just say what we think, then move on.

If want argue, argue till our beloved helmets rot also can't get to a conclusion! :p

The main point now is...better to use full face than open face. More protection.

I let my gf use the HJC FF when I pillon her. For me I recently start to use Rjays FF-Flip Up she bought for me. Quite big shell, heavy, makes my ear pain when removing helmet from head, but I still try to wear it more often than open face helmet for her peace of mind.

With FF and FF-Flip Up, I try to phase out using open face totally. :o
