Hi kspoh

did manage to start my bike with another battery, and checked that the voltage across the battery was about 14v .. does it mean that the alternator is working since it seemed to be charging the battery

cheers

I am not too sure about the correct charging voltage. For car i know it is between 13.6V to 14.8V depending on models. I would test mine and let you know...

Likely the fuel indicator needle within the tank was damaged during the replacement. Check that.

For 1200, is the fuel level sensor inside the tank...

Don't own a R1200 but here goes .....

Item 4 is the fuel sensor, you can see the float lever. So it looks like an internal sensor.

Yup! But think the sensor can be replaced seperately. Not need to buy the whole set...

And number 11 is the fuel strip... hear say that this part got alot of issues

Hi,

I'm completely new to BMW bikes. I'm contemplating getting an older bike for touring (budget constraints), and I was considering between the ST1100 and the BMW1100RT.

I have not owned a BMW bike before and don't know anyone who has, so can anyone advise me on the pros and cons of owning one?

I am concerned about price of maintainance (parts + labour in S'pore), reliability and also quality of parts. Honda parts are relatively cheap, and very reliable, and can be easily sourced locally. Also, I can just go to any shop for servicing, but I suspect I probably can't do the same with a BM? How much more costly are BM parts percentage wise?

Between the Honda ST1100 and the BMW1100RT, which one has a smoother ride (i.e. vibration free)? Also with regards to reliability, which one is more problem free?

Thanks very much for any advice you can give.

hi bro ,both bikes are already "teenager" era,so both will give you adolescent problems.leaks ,mood change(sometimes fail to start),high maintenance so on.why not stretch your budget & get hold of a 2-3 year old stx1300.cheers.

ermm I was also budget like you I got the Pan European version instead of the STX and BMW due to budget constaints recently.

The previous owner had maintained the bike periodically.

10 years and still running like a horse!

No issues able to start the bike

No leaks for the coolant and the engines

no signs of cracks on the hoses and the engines

after u get ur ST11

Go to a reputable mechanic like GOPA specialise in ST11s and have your bike checked out for full servicing. he will advice u wat to change

No doubt his services dont come cheap.

As for BMW let the BMW bros advice u here.

I've recently got a low mileage R1100RT, and so far so good, no problems. I send my bike to PML for servicing, and other that the 30,000 km service being a little bit costly, the other stuff surprisingly is quite reasonable. There are several times I send my bike in for them to check, tune or adjust things, and they do it FOC.

Had a Japanese bike before the RT, and there's really not much difference in terms of maintenance.

My 2 cents :)

MiddleAgedBiker ...

I have owned both the ST1100 and RT1100 for my previous rides. I have sent to GOPA for the ST as well as PML and PITA for the RT. Both are good tourers. You can seldom go wrong on the Honda but i'll give the RT one notch up for handling and stability.

Both have been around for sometime so the wears and tears are unavoidable. Sometimes it's just pure luck. If the pockets are not too deep, the ST would be a safe pick. Parts replacement on the ST can be less taxing. But i do agree with soma that there's minimum difference in terms of maintainence. Good luck

Never own either bikes but from what I see of my mates:

1. ST1100 is heavier to manhandle than the RT

2. ST1100 seems more reliable with less issues e.g. final drive. However, a well-maintained BMW is quite reliable.

3. R1100RT wider than ST1100 for lane splittting? If mirrors clear, then panniers will clear. The BMW's panniers are wider than the mirrors, it seems.

4. ST1100 is "smoother" due to the engine layout.

On paper ST1100 seems the choice but that is a strictly thinking with the head and not heart approach.

Cheers

what options does the GSA comes with?

Does it comes with the panniers?

Anyway, the price is not much off from PML.

A GSA will cost around the price that Mr. Lee of Lois offer.

Maintenance wise is relatively low and no issues with the reliability at the moment.

Be aware that if ur GSA is a PI, to get it service at PML, will cost u $5k (I call it a membership price).

cheers.

Totally agree with many rider here. I just got my BMW r12st 3yr old switch from fz1s. The bm maintenance wise is the same as any jap bike. Only problem is the parts wich only pml carry them locally. Internet is another option to bring in parts.

Servicing can be done on Ur own, eo change spark plug, other basic change. No issue.
