Actually depend on company. My part time job has 60 workers and 7 SS (2 in night shift), safety coordinator and safety manager, and only a sub-con hor. INN my full time has 1 SS and 1 SC as main con and 300 workers.

Part time job see WSHO important that's why bring me in to handle site safety and also prepare company for bizsafe 3.

For people going for safety jobs.....my advice is still.....join "GOOD" company! If you are in company with "crap" safety committment...

1) You generally learn almost all the bad practices

2) Controlled by your management to compromise on safety

3) Put your head on the "MOM CHOPPING BOARD"

4) Eventually lose you job

5) Get sick, tired and demoralised in the "safety" profession.

6) Almost no commitment and sense of responsibility what so ever

7) Just do paper work to cover yourself and nothing else

I know its kind of hard to find "good" co, furthermore they are usually very picky. So.....develop the right type of SO spirit in you then your future will be brighter. Prove to your management you are a "professional" not any "Ah DEH, Ah GAO". Value added not simply a hindrance.

Hope it helps! ;)

handsome, you sound defeated. :dozed:

where got good safety companies everywhere waiting for you to join them one?

if everybody so safety minded, then why there is a need for safety rules and safety ppl?

why not you join a company with bad safety culture and turn it around to be a safety pro company instead?

safety begins with the right mindset.

Well, there are good co out there, not perfect though. I'm currently in one of them. You are kind of right, but I'm not defeated.

5yrs back, I was in "crap" co. b4 too. but to be honest....not a lot of SO are capable of changing co. mindsets. Try a local contractor and you will know what I mean. Safety is still a pretty much, top down management committment approach. The final say is still on your top management and boss. You can persuade or negotiate, but if the final say is still not investing in safety and just to save money, kind of case close. Its always easy to say I go in to change the culture or the mindset but its always harder to walk the talk.

Right mindset is good and important for a SO. But most of the time, identifying the culture of a co is also important. To implement the kind of practice to a co with the wrong mindset and culture will take a much longer time.

My advice is not trying to dissappoint or sound negetive. I just wanna provide infor to ppl coming into the market with a more realistic picture. Its is a hard job, not as easy as it seems, have a lot of room to grow and a market where only the person who show true proffessionalism will shine. A really good company move towards a common objective/goal and move as a team with a full support of top management leadership.

Currently, I'm a SO by practice, part time trainer and auditor. Enjoying everyday of my work. Working with my group of dedicated ops team ppl and top management that commit to safety and well-being of the workers. You achieve miracles through teamwork! Looking forward to positive and capable ppl to raise the standard of this industry!

One final advice, the great wall of china is not built in a single day! Changes takes time to marinate and settle. It takes more patience to change the management than your workers. ;)

i agree with you... i was in Resort World Sentosa and i know exactly why joining good companies are important. And i was also from a few local companies that pay lip service to safety only.

Working in safety line cannot be based on a doing paperwork to cover oneself. The commitment to convey safety is a huge responsibility.

c'est la vie~

I like your thinking and mindset. However, a lot of companies cannot really be bothered to implement good safety culture. U implement too much safety measures will require cost. and the first thing the top management will do is remove u.

thats why they remain bad.

if you are working for CJY, then you better go bro.....they are the typical hit, langa and run type of company.

Side-track:

To prevent these types of co to use SO as shield. Normally the SO in the market will spread the news so that no SO will join these co. Then they have no choice but engage from consultant firm and when blunders are made, the companies are forced to change their culture.

However, same for SOs, if you blunder, the market pretty well know about it. So it will be harder for you to find a batter job position. Reputation stays with you.

I have seen and known so many SOs in the market.....so few really are proffessionals and practice what they preach. Most of the SOs just go for the money, not putting n their spirit. Respect others and others will respect you.

I fully agree with you.

When the Top Management wants to cut costs, save money for other purposes, e.g. marketing purposes, which can bring in profits/money, they will start cutting from EHS first. And when they say "case closed", it is really hard to negotiate and change their mindsets...

Hello All Safety Officers,

I need a favour from anyone in here in regards to any job opportunity as a SO.

I've recently graduated in SDWSH and in a look out for a job. I chance upon taking up this course offered by WDA after I was lay-off from my previous job.

Most of the jobs on offer states the requirement to be registered with MOM. Since I'm new to this industry, can someone enlighten me with other courses that should be a benefit for me to continue in this profession.

Your valuable advice and help is much appreciated. If require I can provide you with my detail resume. Txs in advance..Happy Holiday & Gong Xi Fa Cai to all

There ashould be 3 ways:

1) You can work under a consultant firm as a "training" SO.

2) Take a lower pay and work as a Safety Sup

3) Attached to a contractor and sign with them as a Trainee SO. usually they wants you to work 2 yrs after registration. these contractors provide a chance for you to get the 2 yrs exp you need.

Hope it helps.
