Hi fellow FZ1 riders,

got a couple of questions regarding my Gen 2 FZ1. Please advise. :)

1) Spark Plugs

I am on the original spark plugs and mileage is about 18,000km now. The plugs are due for a change at around the 20K mark, so which one should I get? Anyone knows whats the original?

I am not into those expensive iridium plugs, normal ones will do. :)

2) Coolant

The coolant needs to be flushed completely every 3 years or something right?

Anyone knows whats the coolant brand in the original FZ1? Cos I might need to top up abit.

3) Anyone using fully synthetic EO? What's the service interval for you guys? every 5K?

Been using Maxima EXTRA4 10w40. Seems good enough, but not sure as to should I keep to the 5K servicing of E.O. and Oil filter change.

4) Charging point

Anyone installed a charging point/ cigarette socket on your FZ1?

5) Tyres

Anyone using Pirelli Diablo? What's the mileage that I can expect? :)

Using one pair now, seems ok. Then again, the original Dunlops seems ok to be, even though it was rubbished by many people. haha...

Please advise.

Thanks!

I guess the best part of the new FZ1 is the revised ECU map.

Probably make it less wheezy on lower throttle.

But i think it's a pain to keep a white bike clean.

plugs...

either use NGK CR9E or Denso U27ESR-N, gap is 0.7 - 0.8 mm (0.028 - 0.031 in)...

taken from http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/fz1specifications.shtml...

coolant...

i recommend Maxima Coolaide and do it every year...

flush and top with without distilled water...

if u know how, u can DIY too...

EO...

it is good till 5K km...

anything after that, u still can use, but not too recommended for engines unless ur fz1 is ur enemy...

heard some bike nvr change their EO, they only top up...

in the end, the whole engine was blocked due to EO hardening...

there goes their bike...

oil filter...

they can actually last up to 30K km or even more...

but usually ppl change it every 10K km...

some bike shops have promotion packages, if you calculate, it's quite worth it to change even oil filter together...

so, y not?

charging point...

u mean charging point for battery maintenance?

i've both charging point as well as cig socket...

wad would you like to know?

tires...

no comments on pirelli cus i'm a michelin rhino-ed PR2 fan...

Steady lah bro!!! :thumb::thumb:

I mean cigarette socket for charging my GPS. But I am concerned about quite a few things:

1. Waterproofing

I am not sure if water gets to the socket, the electrics will be kaput?

2. Will it discharge the battery over time?

3. Is there a fuse connected to the socket?

thanks for your advice bro!! :thumb:

NGK CR9EK. Actually no need to change if there're no issue. The plugs can last 30,000 to 40,000km. But if have spare cash, why not?

2) Coolant

The coolant needs to be flushed completely every 3 years or something right?

Anyone knows whats the coolant brand in the original FZ1? Cos I might need to top up abit.

Actually based on manual, they said add distill water to top up. However, I would recommend doing flushing every year, since FZ1 is a hot beast. Getting a bottle of concentrated coolant agent, Water Wetter only like $15 bucks per bottle then mix with distill water that can last u at least 3 flush. It's really very easy to do DIY flush.

3) Anyone using fully synthetic EO? What's the service interval for you guys? every 5K?

6k. Change oil filter after every 2 servicing of EO change.

yup! with bone! wth right? :faint:

outcome of my tire: PERFECT till now with not a single cent of pocket burning (crossing fingers till morning)!

wad happened?

i did a pre-ride check 2 days b4 my last week's KL trip and nothing unusual happened...

when i reach KL city toll for a break, i noticed there's a small white patch on my bike...

after close examine, i discovered that it is a "nail", probably covered with some white concrete substance... o_O

i did not pull it out straight in case my rhino-ed PR2 did not give me wad it should be, hence i jus stick with that till i got back SG...

when i'm leave KL back for SG, i did a tire pressure check and it dropped to 37psi from the initial 42psi...

it further dropped to 33psi on Monday and i immediately pump it back 42psi and arrange to go unique (since i got my rhino-ed PR2 from there) on my next available timing...

initial process?

reach there (half way ran into ah josh :D), the mechanic tried to pull it out but invalid, tried to "gor-ed" it out but bits of it was "gor-ed" crushed into powder... o_O

this is the point when i realized that it might not be a nail...

the mechanic still trying to "gor" my tire till the hole became bigger... :faint:

still can laugh at me and recommend me another set of tire... wth~! :gun:

i immediately ask him to stop doing wad he is doing and demand him to take out the whole tire from my rim and see wad is stuck in it...

this is the moment when i realized that it looks like a crushed/biten piece of a bone with sharp edges cus it looks like those that my cousin's dogs like to bite on and spit it out... knn~ :help:

remedy?

after pulling the bone out, this mechanic use his dirty fingers to rub onto my rhino, trying to make it seal up... wth~

i immediately alert the rhino distributor and he request kelvin to use hair-dryer/heat gun to blow onto the hole area to seal it up...

instead, this mechanic go take a flame torch and heat it! alamak! :slapforehead:

then he use his fan to blow it cool...

in the end?

ask me monitor on how is it, else they will apply another layer of rhino over it...

i decided it's time not to let them mess with it as they might not be the professional in rhino products, i go straight to the distributor the next day...

aftermath process?

reach distributor place and we discovered that there's no more leaking at that moment already...

perhaps the application had seal it up after the foreign object had removed and much heat had been applied during the process, the flame torch as well as the heat while riding on the road...

the normal air that contains h2o had also decrease the longevity of the rhino gel due to oxidation...

conclusion?

1. nvr use dirty hands to touch the rhino gel as this will destroy the exposed compound

2. nvr use flame thrower to try to heat the applicant in hoping that it will devolve and cover the gap

3. use only hair-dryer or heat gun if gap is too big

4. try to minimize the usage of normal air pump as it contains h2o

5. foreign object is safe to be pulled out but allow a little time for the gap to be sealed up

for now, i shall monitor on the tire pressure in the morning as tire... it no drop, it means the function/objective of rhino product is truly the true! hahahaha!

dun mentioned bro... ;)

free kopi? :p

anyway, cig socket for ur GPS...

1. does ur GPS comes with a power cable? if yes, recommended to use that cus if you're braving an ultimate rain during ur ride with GPS plugged into ur cig socket... i'm afraid that the chances of saying prayers is of a certain level cus the water might sip into it...

2. you can use cig socket for ur GPS without being affected by my point #1, u can either wire the cig socket in such a way that it does not hit water e.g under ur seat...

waterproofing...

shouldn't be a problem if you have cover over it...

see my pic below? there's a sample of my cig socket on the right side of my dash board along with a battery charger socket for easy battery maintenances...

discharge of battery over time & fuse...

for me, i use a switch to control the availability of my cig socket...

hence if the switch is off, how can it discharge battery? right?

back to answering your question, it shouldn't be drawing any power from your battery because no power application is tapping at your battery...

i don't use a fuse for that...

hope it helps... :)

30ml per 1 litre of distilled water. The coolant capacity is around 2.5litre.

It isn't really that troublesome. What do you think?

I am very ngiao person, so let's do that math. A bottle of premixed cost $20 or less but I dunno. Engine ice cost $35(whether include flush or not I dunno) and it can last a single flush only. A bottle cost $15 and it can last me at least 3 full coolant flush + a few bucks getting distilled water from mama shop + sense of satisfaction. :cheeky:

I had been using it for many years on all my bikes since 2005, previously using Maxima concentrated cooaide. All doing same cooling effect.

Cheers =)
