Be cool, Be smart... Be your Yourself!

Regardless the bike model/brand. No matter how good/fast the bike is. Without skills the bike is nothing.

New Monsters are now 695cc and above.

The 400cc is obsolete and those OTR are usually very old.

dang...means its been so long i've last wen for friday outing liaoz...

anyway wat u say was thru, seriously dun understand y gahment still restricting 2A to 400cc...besides sillypore dun think any1 classifies 400cc as a mid range ceiling...even japan has moved away from 400cc to 600cc...but den again we have those black sheeps sabo us wif reckless riding..till gahment has to resort to this measure to cut down on bike fatalities on our roads.... :sian:

I used to wonder why as well, until I started riding a 600cc bike. The power difference from a 400cc 58bhp bike to a 600cc 100something bhp is a lot of difference. We're talking about twice the power. Not many people can handle that. If 2A was redefined to include 600cc bikes, not many people will go for 400cc bikes...and then again how many folk can handle upgrading from a 10-20bhp machine to a 100bhp machine? It kinda defeats the purpose of the step-by-step 2b, 2a and 2 regime.

If your dream bike is a Class 2, just skip Class 2A. Can save some $$ for the big one.

this may be dangerous leh. u wun be used to the power...especially if u intend to switch to different kind of bike...like from phantom then suddenly r1 when u get class 2. I switched from phantom to g4. First few weeks on the g4 really like back to school..riding style so different+ so much more power. I think if i str away switch to class 2 supersport i wun dare to ride le

You're right but it really depends on individual. I switched from a Phantom 200cc to a Harley 1200cc without major hiccups. The reason I skipped class 2A was because there wasn't any 400cc bike that I liked, & I saw no reason to shell out cash for a transitional bike when I knew I was gonna get a Class 2 bike ultimately.

No doubt there will be a learning period to get used to the new performance of the much more powerful bike, but not really necessary to go through class 2A if you are confident of yourself.

Don't forget that the graduated motorbike license class is perhaps unique to Singapore. Many countries just has an open motorbike license for all displacements

Erm... IMO, Phantom to Harley isn't exactly a good example to depict the upgrade inadaptability, especially so for your comparatively petite HD Sportster. Firstly the HD is still a cruiser in nature, its power isn't really anything drastic compared to a cls 2 sportsbike. But upgrading from Phantom to R1 really is a problem. Other than the obvious ergonomics differences, R1 gives you a high-rev, peaky 180 ponies. I believe the HD Sportster doesn't even give you more than 80 HP, and considering that HD's low-end torque characteristics is more similar to the single-pistoned Phantom, superbikes/supersports and HDs itself are worlds apart.

Ofcourse there are countries which allow open class motorbike licences, but simply because some realise the shortcomings in this system, that is why our government(and some other countries as well) adopt multi-tier classifications to overcome this problem. Though, some might argue that the 2B/2A/2 classes exist for some obvious reasons.

Looking at how many of those just-graduated riders are wheelie-flipping their litre bikes should give you an idea how difficult it is to put a superbike's nose down. I would urge an intermediate upgrade to facilitate a more gradual learning curve. Then again, I share some of your sentiments as I know a few who survived the adaptability hurdle.

Good points... & I agree with all of them. I guess all upgrades should be looked at on a case-by-case, bike-by-bike and rider-by-rider basis.

No hard and fast rules for everyone, since everyone learns and rides differently

Just curious though, an R1 keeps 180ponies in the stable, how many horses does a 2A bike, say an RVF have?

Well there are soooo many cl2a bike to choose now.

If u like scrambler, theres the DRZ-400SM, XR400, if u like naked bikers ops i mean bike hehe. there's the S4, FJR400, GSR400 (if u wanna get 2nd hand fairing bike there's always the GSXR400, CBR400RR or RVF to choose from. there are some owners who still maintain their bike very well). Not sure abt cruiser thou but i thk not many selection for 400cc.

Btw. Super 4's Hyper VTEC is extremely reliable because it's working principle is different from earlier VTEC design for cars. Hyper VTEC is directly actuated not by oil pressure but by solenoids which recieve signals from the ECU and tachometer to increase the valves timing & lift. The failure rate of solenoids are very very low.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.
