hello peeps, i have a concern i like to share with you all. Background info:

Air pressure i pump in tyres, 30-33 PSI

Tyre type: Michelin Pilot Power

Today while riding back from work, i was approaching a hump which had a metal plate over it and it was after a shower. I freewheeled to the hump (ya i was just being naughty and wanted to just cruise to it instead of braking later) and while doing so, i saw a kup coming from my left, so i clutch out and while doing so, my back wheel slid, somehow managed to recover but that was scary.

It happened earlier about 2 weeks back too in my car park as i was turning, my back wheel slid while on a wet metal grill covering a drain. That slide was not as bad, the tyre quickly recovered traction.

Just wanna ask, does it happen to you so often?! And i guess freewheeling is not advisable? Anyone knows if it will affect stable riding?

Thanks. Wondering if i should change the tyres but they are rather new, looks good, no balding at all. Grooves all look like brand new.

U din mention whether or not ur using brand spanking new tyres? If they are, they would be covered with wax so that makes it all the more slippery. But, even if it's not, metallic surfaces offer little grip in the dry; so in the wet they would be even less grippy. Once i was riding my cbr150 and was on a slow corner on a set of drain covers with metal strips, and just to know how slippery things can get in the wet(or rather for the fun of it), i revved a bit and the rear wheel just broke free. So that incident taught me to avoid metallic surfaces especially on corners, and those white stripes as well.

I dun think the problem is with the tyre as i use the same ones and they corner very well even with heavy rain. You can expect to find good reviews of this tyre on the forum. Plus, even with deep grooves it doesn't mean that ull have more grip. if the tyre has aged so bad that it has hardened it will not provide enough traction as well. Grooves are there to drain water while riding on wet surfaces.

From what you mentioned i think u were in too low a gear for the speed that u were doing so when u clutch out again the engine braking managed to overcome the grip that was available to the rear tyres on the metal plate. Just a thought.

As far as whether or not freewheeling affects stable riding, i don't think so ..maybe others can chip in..

Ride fast..ride safe..don't crash...

When you release clutch you engage the drive train.... its called engine brake which acts on your rear wheel... that's why you skidded.

Posted

nah, i think it's because freewheeling thats why he skidded on the metal patch. granted, metal grates offer very little grip as well.

from what i understand, when you freewheel (clutch in), the clutch disengages from the crank and the engine has less resistance. so you will realise the bike moves faster slightly.

anyways, i used to take corners and turns with the clutch fully in, only recently did i realise it was not safe. trying to change the habit. also practices correct gearing.

Hi all, thanks for all your input. Yes, i agree, freewheeling is something i think i would do much less often. And after thinking back on what happened and all your various experienced input, i have sort of concluded that freewheeling let me to have too high a speed and like some of you said, when i engage the drive train, my gear was too low. Break traction, rear wheel skid.

Yea, metal gratings are really slippery as an eel. Will try to avoid, if can't, go straight, go slow. Phew...what a few milliseconds.

My tyres are not new, they are about 2 years from Manufactured date. Although, in use for about a year. From what i learned at BBDC, they say we should look at Manufactured date and if more than 2 years we should not take it right? Does anyone practice this? My bike is 2nd hand and looking at the tyres i think they look alright. Just bit concerned on the Manu date. From inspection, they arent like cracked or show fatigued. Doesnt look aged at all.

As far as date are concerned, a racer indicated that even 9 months after we purchase the tyres they're starting their ageing process already. Maybe that means the tires are not really good on track where you're really leaning into corners. But Bridgestone indicates that their tires are good for 5 years from manufactured date, but clients that source their tires from them like Aston Martins will advice that tires should be changed within 3 years...for me( normal rider, non racer), if it's for transport, 2 years is still acceptable i guess..if there's still thread la..

Having said that, if you're uncomfortable with the tires' age, do a burnout and destroy the rear tire and change a set la..btw if u can find a way to destroy the front tyre pls let me know..haha..

After playing Soccer at Turf Club, saw fuel light came on, went to pump oil at the Shell right outside the Turf Club. After pump oil, looked up saw pump number 5 so walked towards cashier. In front of me was a middle age Chinese guy in business wear, long sleeves. When it came to my turn, I told the cashier, pump 5. She without checking, blatantly told me that it's already paid and said I was lying, claim that I should be paying for pump 6 since there's a BMW parked there and it cost 120bucks. Mind you, I was in my riding jacket, full face helmet as I never had the habit of removing them when pumping oil.

I took off my helmet and told her off, can't she even see that I'm in my riding gears and which idiot will drive a car wearing a riding jacket and full face helmet. At this moment, I turned and saw the business fellow drove away in his BMW. Then the cashier made a big fuss and insisted that I pay for that 120bucks. I was so pissed off that I demanded to see the supervisor. At the same time, told the cashier to allow other motorist pay first. She simply just say they can wait. :faint: So when the supervisor came, she took the case seriously and told me to pay for the pump 5 instead. By then it was about half an hour there already.

I jokingly told her that since that stupid business fellow paid for pump 5 then I pay for what? I could simply just ride off without having to make any payment. :cheeky:

This ain't the first time that I experienced these stupid drivers try to pay off their car petrol through our bike pump number. Bloody cheapskates. So guys, be cautious as sometimes the cashiers can be ignorant too.
