to mi, warming up of bike (after a LONG rest, eg: > 6hrs) is impt.

i'll usually warm up my bike to like @ least 60 degrees on my temp gauge.

treat yr bike well, like a human.

can someone advise this, what abt 2 stroke bikes? do they require warm-up?

why i ask is because my mechanic told me many times not to warm up, just on and go straightaway. he mention if not the spark plug will get wet by oil and goes weak... something like that. He also told me to whack full throttle...

can someone kindly advise on this? thanks.

It should be 100% operating temp, meaning you should be riding the bike around for at least 15~20mins, the coolant temp indicating 80~90deg doesn't mean the oil is hot. Don't mess around especially with a new engine that's still 'tight'.

2 strokers don't depend on oil pressure like 4 strokes hence the oil temp and viscosity doesn't mean a thing to such engines. The main crank bearings are ball or roller bearings that are lubricated by the 2T. IMHO, it should still be important for the parts to come up to temp before 100% full throttle for the sake of expansion tolerance.

What your mech say is somewhat true. Petrol in 4 strokes is already harder to vapourize and combust in a cold engine. In a 2 stroke, 2t mixed in the petrol makes it even worse, so it is understandably easier to foul a plug.

thanks for answering my doubts. kinda of understand how 2 stroke and 4 stroke works now.

The main reason for warm up is to get the engine oil into the correct operating viscosity. Even with 'cold climate' viscosity rating like 5W50 (say Maxima Ultra), the oil is >6 times as thick as it is when fully warmed up. 15W50 oils >7 times as thick, 20W50 oils can be >9~10 times as thick. This is in our tropical climate, imagine people staying in winter conditions.

The lubrication and cooling of the crank bearings depend largely on the flow rate of oil. When it is cold and thick, there is too much resistance to pump and there is a valve in the oil pump mechanism of the engine that divert the flow away. What happens is that there is insufficient flow to the crank bearings. While there is an oil film clinging to the metal parts, this itself does not offer the full protection, in fact, not even close! This is a time when the the antiwear additives that plate the metal surfaces plays a big part, they act as a barrier that takes the wear instead of the base metal.

The principle of the crank lubrication is like those big granite balls 'floating' on a a base with flowing water, shut off the water and the ball touches the base, stop spinning. You can oil up the ball and force it to spin, but it still gets damaged.

If you rev the engine hard at this point, the bearings area can heat up very fast from the friction. But the oil in the sump is still cold and not flowing up to the bearings fast enough to sustain the oil film pressure, resulting in metal to metal contact, scarring the delicate bearing material. The end result is similar to running the engine without sufficient oil, spinning a bearing in the worse case scenario.

Of course, with our type of climate, we don't have the same level of coldness that people in winter climate have to deal with. The engine starts right up with little hesitation. Still, the oil is 6~10 times as thick compared to what the engine is designed for. In smaller 2B bikes, the oil takes forever to come up to temp, so might as well ride off gently once you can have steady idle. Class 2 bikes pick up temp much quicker and takes only a short while to get warm.

So what do you suggest a good technique for warming up a Class 2 bike?

okie bro, so before i whack hard i warm up nicely (slow riding 10-15mins) but before i ride..warm up idle roughly how long. 5min ? later my balls will get cook anot. lol

If warming up for 5min would get ur balls cook, then 15min on the expressway u get to eat piping hot hot dog ald.:cheeky:

rev and warm up till ur engine and piston running smoothly, roughly 5mins bah but it depends.

thats for 2 stroke.

if 4stroke. rev abit and warm up 1 mins can go liao unless the bike >2 days nv start then warm up longer loh.

for 4 storkes i think still depend on the brand of bike u riding and personal perference

some of my friends like riding suzuki , they will wait till their temp is abt 55 then they move off..

some like yamaha, wil show a lo first before the temp shown , once 40d u can choose to move off ,

i normally move off at 50

I usually let the bike idle till it's over 50 degrees (4 stroke), then ride off slowly. That's about 2 minutes of idling. After moving off i still take it easy on the throttle until the temps are in the high 60s-70s, basically the usual running temps i see at night.

But don't forget even if you warm up the engine to operating temp in the carpark, doesn't mean can whack the bike when you exit the carpark. Your tires and brakes will still be cold. Please be careful until those are warmed up as well.

not necessary. rev your bike early in the morning or late at night and you get ppl throwing eggs at your bike. just let the engine idle for a minute or 2 and it's good to go.

Erm what boout this : I usualy kick the kickstarter 20 times with the igniton key swicth is off. Then after 20 kik's , swicth on the igniton key and kickstart like usual. Is this habit good or bad for engine? becoz i tot, by kicking the kickstarter with the igniton key is off, i tot tht would help the EO circulate in da engine be4 i reli start the engine. After tht, i'll leave the bike idle for 5 mins. Den ride it gently for few Kms. Den VrooOOoommmmmmmmm

ANd my bike is onli wave100R....

Any comment bout this habit?

for 2-stroke kickstart bikes, what i used to do was crank the bike 2-3 times (with key in off position). start your igniton and give it a good one. my sp ALWAYS starts with 1 kick using this method. i never like using the choke because it sounds like crap. normally, i would just hold the throttle and let the idle hover around 1.5krpm for 1-2 minutes.

wah.. good tips given here! thanks thanks! but is it alrite to let say kick start with the choke.. then after that let it continue running for about 2-3 mins with the choke still on?

damn!

but say if it shows 84,85, and my surrounding eg legs are feeling HOT from engine, haha. means its good to go ?

1-2 mins wif choke on.

then close choke and throttle 3000-4500rpm, keep blowing for 10sec.

blow a few times before going off.

sure will not stall
