Hi Guys, i don't know if this had been brought up before but after seeing track pictures, i'm like kinda interested to test my bike on the track.

Few questions.

What is the requirement to be on the track? Bikes, build, attire, costs and etc.

About the suit, do you have to own it or can you rent it?

If you are not used to tracking, do you get to so called warm up and play by yourself or do you straight go and race with others?

Your advice is much appreciated. Thanks people.

First, read other threads regarding starting out on the track.

You need your bike to be in tip-top condition. Minor faults that you can tolerate on the road can cause you danger on the track.

As for attire, some people get away with full-face helmet, touring jacket, leather gloves and SAF boots. That is not going to protect you much in case of a crash, it is merely to meet track regulations. But if you just want to try it once to see if you like it, you can do that. If you become a regular, proper race attire is essential.

The majority of us don't race on the track. You can call it free practice. Everybody goes at his own pace and there is no competition. Safety is the most important thing. You can race with a friend after you feel comfortable riding. You are always racing yourself to improve yourself, and that is where the fun is.

like some people would say ... it's the rider , not the bike ...

i may well ride an R6 but i could jolly well be ass-whipped by m'sian kup kias in track ...

well, some people play track to see how far they could push themselves/their bikes on the track ...so no issue to feel inferior about what u ride ...

On the track.. you challenge yourself and no one else. Dun worry about the kup kias or the 1000s.

Start slow and watch your RPMs in the corner.. you want to be in the max torque zone so that you have good engine braking for 4 strokers.

For 2 strokers... you don't have engine brake, or at least not enough of it to talk about... just be sure you in the high rpms... drop your gears to maintain the rpms.

Start slow and concentrate on keeping a smooth line thru the corners first then slowly build up your speed in the corners.

It is in the corners that all bikes become equal.

That advice seems to be from someone who have eaten more salt than i eat more rice. haha. Thanks anyway.

Bro, how you define torque in a bike context? So that means when you are cornering you should have high rpm?

hello.. just felt i should bring this up. a sportsbike is better designed for track purpose as compared to the S4. so dun expect ur bike to perform as well as a sportsbike. Also dun push so hard BECAUSE i have seen a fren of mine riding a S4 crash not because of his fault but because of the bike's limitations. due to that he retired from riding. like wat many people say, safety is the utmost important. u go in one piece.. come back to the pit in one piece. fast or slow doesnt matter. we all go there for enjoyment and to vent out some stress.. some of the better ones race for better timings. whichever group u belong to.. it's important to know the bike's AND your limits limits. no one's gonna laugh at u if u are slow ... i know because i am slow. :)

Bro, how you define torque in a bike context? So that means when you are cornering you should have high rpm?

Go look at your bike brochure. It will show you maximum horsepower and maximum torque and the corresponding rpm. Your maximum horsepower is normally very close to the redline of tachometer, whereas the max torque rpms is normally around 3/4 of the max hp rpm.

I have seen people go straight off the track instead of taking the corners, especially the fast ones like Turns 1 and 6 at PG. Simply because they were on top gear, and their rpms too low... therefore the bike just wants to 'drift' outwards. To make the situation worse... they panic and pull in the clutch, totally no engine braking... something you don't want have happening in a corner.

On the track you should riding with rpms as low as the rpms of max torque and pulling to the max hp rpms before changing gears. When you are in the max torque rpm range... cutting the throttle in an emergency will allow the engine braking to apply a steady braking force to your rear wheel to allow the bike to pull back into the corner instead of wanting to go straight.

But a word of caution here... you should have downshifted to the correct gear BEFORE going into the corner and NOT downshift in the middle of the corner coz thats going to load the front tyre and cause you to low side.

Thats why I keep emphasising to you that you should go round slow first and feel your way around till you are comfortable with the gearing for the corners before increasing your speed. Know what gears you can take a corner in first before gunning your throttle wide open.

I have seen alot of newbies go out and try and ride fast... gunning the throttle wide open on the straights (anybody can do that) but panicking at the end of the straight coz they dare not downshift or are afraid of hearing the engine screaming as they downshift for the corner. No downshift equals no engine braking equals go straight for the tyre wall.

And one more thing... go with fresh tyres, check your brakes and set your suspension and tyre pressures for track.

My DRZ400SM tyres are set at F 25PSI and R 29 PSI for riding on the roads. On the track it is 22PSI for both front and rear.

Track riding is fun.. it is the place to learn how to control your bike at high speeds and train your reflexes. Lessons which when learnt makes you a better rider when riding on public roads.
