But by the way, I noticed that you said you only drop the gears AFTER you let off the brakes.

That is a big NO NO, you need drop the gears WHILE you are on the brakes. The last thing you want is to unsettle the bike with unecessary movement while turning in. This is crucial and you can see from onboard shots in MotoGP/Superbike/Where Ever, that gears are all done asap preferably before the turn is fully initiated. Brakes are eased off before (safe method)/while turning in(trail braking-advanced method) turn in. This Should be the last thing you do before committing to the turn.

Hart, can I ask you a question on that answer? Is it better to downshift sequentially (clutch in, kick down, blip, clutch out, repeat) or downshift directly to gear (clutch in, kick kick kick down, blip hard, clutch out)?

I do experience rear wheel lockup once in a while at the end of the front straight and before turn 3 of PG. I got used to it but I know I shouldn't be locking up any wheels. My ride is a CBR400RR with stock clutch and stock gearing.

Appreciate your help! James

Guru Hart,

Thanks for the help dude. I guess when it comes to track riding I am new. Only been there four times. Once I reached a certain stage in my riding progress, there were simply no one with the required expertise to tell me where my riding was going wrong...so over the years I've been doing what I do without knowing if it's right or not. I'll try out your suggested drills. Once again, thanks loads :)

i know because i almost died. walked away with bruises. saw an old man doing offerings at the corner i crashed doing prayers at a broken tree which my bike (rvf which i raced the following year)flew into. i did ask the old man about what happened as i felt wierd and he claimed he witnessed a very bad accident weeks ago and he heard rumours that rider died and he lost his sleep......

2 weeks later somebody really died(different corner).

the guy bought his KRR on the very day he got his 2B. 11pm at night, still cornering all over singapore. then disaster.he overdid the corner.....as it is a reducing radius like sepang turn 13 to 14. till this day, not many can do this corner perfectly in sepang. so road warriror having no run off area bangs into metal barrier, flies, and upon landing......his head came off, body lying in the centre of a 2 lane road. body was still wriggling.

the worst thing the best friend had to do was carry the head of his friend and put it at the body so that it doesnt look so bad to passerby vehicles. imagine carrying your best friend head in your hands. he was the only son.

i know this post is off topic.....but this is some of the reality that can happen.

i am not saying that u cant fly and land on a track crash, but chances of fatality is lesser.

Heya Ninja,

60/40 Rule - May apply but when cornering, things change so much I do not believe that would be 60/40 all the way through the corner, it cant be fixed, but what is mentioned about using the throttle to adjust weight distirbution and keeping the chassis happy definitely is definitely Gold.

Cheers,

Hartholomew Mamola

Dear Guru Hart,

Thank you for enlighten me on this 60/40 thing.

On the track there are no metal railings with killer pillars every 10 metres that are designed to stop cars and trucks, but slices up riders.

I cringe whenever I think of even coming close to those railings.

ppreciate your help! James

James, from what Charn taught was to clutch in, blip then kick down and clutch out. If you kick down, then blip defeats the purpose of blipping. Charn thought a gear at a time, some guys go 2 gears down.

RIDE SAFELY ON THE ROAD, BURN RUBBER AT THE TRACK

Since this thread is all about cornering, would like to shoot of a question which hopefully you regular track riders would be able to address.

I know that you are supposed to enter the corner at lower gears to keep the rpms high so you have the power to exit the corner. But during the straights where I go up to gear 4 or possibily gear 5 at revs exceeding 12k, the rearwheel always locks up when I drop the gears prior to entering the corner and gives me a good butt waggling. Sometimes it gets so out of hand that my instinct kicks in and I clutch in to free up the rear wheel..and screw my entry into the corner.

So what I need you helpful folk to share is your entry techniques...how to avoid excessive fishtailing before dipping into the corner.

Btw my technique in a nutshell involves brake, down gear, release brake, down gear and bank. Dunno correct anot... :p

which corner is dis? if frm 5th down to 3rd i guess it muz be turn 3. usually wat i did is dat after exiting turn 2 wif 5th gear, i will close throttle, apply front brake lightly n drop to 4th gear, let go of clutch to make use of the engine breaking then drop to 3rd b4 banking in while slightly releasing front brake( keeping the rotor grazed the pad) n controlling of throttle to keep in race line n eyes focusing on my exit point.........:)

Thank you John. I forgot to ask Charn the last time I met him at the track. But from our conversation back then, he seemed to be okay with either method (one gear at a time or multiple gears at a time).

I always thought you blip right before you release the clutch in order to match the engine revs to the wheels.

Sorry :offtopic:

I really hope the threadstarter did not ignore our warning...

interesting gearing....in pg, if u 5th gear is back straight, then turn 2 is done in 4th gear. followed by 2 gears at turn 3. turn 3 is in 2nd gear.

if u r riding a 400, then back straight can hit 6th gear.

in mid turn 2, u should be ready to full throttle again.....then slam the brakes and drop 2 gears.....what i observed when charn, jun jie, mark(maxxis) break for turn 3 is that their bike wont be perfectly upright....it will remain tilted to the left. why use engine breaking, when all the breaking is done using the front wheel.....

amba, if I WOT the entire back straight, I usually end up shifting up to 6th for only a very short time before shifting down for turn 2. So sometimes I just don't shift up and stay in 5th gear to negotiate turn 2 and then slam on the brakes and take turn 3 in 2nd gear.

I think charn said release till half clutch then clutch in and change gear again if u need multiple down gears.

happens to me too. but stayed in 6 long enough to get a few kms more. I think u can take turn 2 in 6th.

I'm talking about turn 1 and turn 2,3 ba...those that come immediately after the straights. Turn 1 can just drop one gear and take ah? Normally if i do that, my exit speed will be damn lousy...

i always take turn 2 in 5th gear using rolling speed n n yeah my bike will tilt left abit n knees out body tuck in close to tank n head turning to the left looking at apex b4 entering 3rd corner in 3rd gear, so far nvr try in gear 2 for 3rd corner. mayb will try ur technic nxt time n see how it goes.. if it can help me cut my laptime, dat'll be great.......:thumb:
