When singapore government was looking at licensing, they look at worldwide level and found that japan has the least number of death rate on motorbikes, hence they adopted this class system which we have today.

some forumers quoted Australian system for motorcycles... here's a summary of that system in NSW:

 

3 categories:

a) Learner rider license

b) Provisional rider license

c) Full rider license

 

Motorcycle Rider Training Scheme provides two levels of training; pre-learner and pre-provisional. Both levels involve on-road and off-road training.

 

Learner rider license

. at least 16 years & 9 months old

. pass a pre-learner course

. learner rider license valid for only 12 months

. hold license for 3 mths before can attend pre-provisional course (except mature age exemption, >30yrs old)

. license expire if didn't pass pre-provisional course within 12 months, attend pre-learner course again

. learner riders restrictions:

... dislay a black-on-yellow L plate at front/rear when riding, 2 demerit points if improperly displayed

... max. speed 80km/h

... cannot ride within the boundaries of Centennial Park, Sydney

... cannot carry a pillion passenger

... engine capacity

... cannot use any mobile phone function, including hands-free devices

... for any speeding offence, incur fine & license suspension

 

Provisional rider license

. pass a pre-provisional course

. Provisional P1 riders restrictions:

... display a red-on-white P plate at front/rear when riding, 2 demerit points if improperly displayed

... max. speed 90km/h

... only ride automatic bike unless test is passed on a manual bike

... engine capacity

... incur license suspension if get four or more demerit points

... for any speeding offence, 4 demerit points, fine & license suspension (min 3 months)

... cannot use any mobile phone functions, including hands-free devices. 3 demerit points & fine (4 demerit points if occur in school zone)

 

Full rider license

. can upgrade after holding Provisional Rider Licence for 12 months

. no tests required, just pay $$

 

 

Demerit Points Scheme:

Immediate license suspended/disqualified for speeding offences:

. >45 km/h above speed limit (6 mths)

. >30 km/h but

 

Points resulting in suspension (3-year period):

. Full unrestricted license = 12 pts

. Provisional license = 4 points

 

Double demerit points apply for speeding & helmet offences during all holiday periods such as long weekends, Christmas, New Year and Easter

To me, the Australian system is tougher than Singapore's.

When I got 6 pts (double demerit pts applies) for minor speeding last new year eve (31 Dec), driving/riding around becomes very stressful coz half the license is already gone. One more within the next 3 yrs and its back to public transport.

instead of pegging it to cc's, perhaps it be better to peg it to weight-to-horsepower ratio. That way, "2b" riders are able to ride 4 stroke, 250cc bikes, eg Honda Twister. It has the power of about a 150cc 2 stroke, without the noise and smoke that the garment's trying to cut down on.

nah seriously i think its either that or increase the minimium age limit. No offence but imagine if there is only 1 class or 2 classes of bike lic. Any immature young punk would be able to ride litre and above bikes and i bet there will be chaos liao... Racing around with each other blowing one another... Riding 2-3 years if you are lucky (or should i say unlucky), you meet all those people who tries to kill you otr, you sorta realise the dangers of the road and you do mature alot...

sorry for the noob qn. how much and how long would i roughly be to take up 2b. as in average? if lets say i buy a bike, transfering of ownership must i be 21years old above?

i think 3 classes is needed. but the probabtion should be slightly shorter instead of a year.. maybe 6-8 months?

just my 2 cents worth.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

IMHO, it's better to err on the side of caution, especially when lives are involved.

 

The different stages of Class 2 exist to acclimatize the rider to the different throttle response as you upgrade to a bigger bike. If you take away Class 2A, then there will be a big jump from the small cylinder bikes to the superbikes. Logically speaking, this may result in more accidents. And as a result of that, we can expect higher premiums for bikers. I feel that this system, although agonizing (especially when we have to endure the 1-year wait between classes), has probably saved more lives than we can possibly put on paper. If you ask me, there should also be such stages for Class 3 since you see those newbie drivers driving daddy's souped-up cars and crashing them...

 

Furthermore, the trouble you went through will probably make you treasure your Class 2 licence more.

Therefore, People will not like be going, Class 2 bikes only what or 2 wheels still a bike kind of thinking.

Then It will also make people understand more about the power and control of the vehicle.

Hahahaha!! Interesting categorization. If this works, Mazda would be happy since those rich daddy's boys will be buying the Mazda RX8, which is using a rotary engine at 1.3cc but churns out more power than those 2 litre cars....

I wonder many of those polled "Yes" to 3 license classes got Cl2. And how many who polled "No" dun. :D

 

Anyway, by upping the 2B to 250cc, many newly minted bikers will have access to alot more bikes!

They should change it to a 6 system tier.

 

Class 2E: 125 cc and below only

Class 2D: 200 cc and below only

Class 2C: 250cc and below only

Class 2B: 400cc and below only

Class 2A: 600cc and below only

Class 2: Everything else la dey

 

This way, kiddies will be more careful on the roads and won't cause so much trouble. Imagine being at the new "class 2a" which takes 5 years to obtain, only to get it revoked!

For bikes, 2B, 2A and 2 they not only have different power output, their weight and handling are very different as well.

Where by for cars, U can drive a 1.0L and a 5.0L cars without much problem. It is not right to say a car with a bigger engine is more powerful than a smaller engine.

 

There are so many small turbocharged engine around which is more powerful than the bigger cc cars. A 1.3L rx7 with 280bhp compaing with a oridinary 2.5L sedan with 170bhp. How many stock turbocharge bikes do we see running around (I can't think of any)? So whats the point of limiting the license for class 3 according to it's engine capacity? for bigger vehicles, the weight is the main concern instead of the engine capacity, which the govenment already been categorised into class 4 and 5. If let say class 3 were to be further broken down into 3B, 3A and 3, isn't 2B need to be categorised into smaller catogories? for eg 2B(B) 2B(A) 2B

 

I find that some ridders are suggesting class 3 to be broken into smaller categories is because they are simply jealous of why ridders need to take 3TP test before they can ride a big bike where a class 3 holder can drive almost any cars on the road.

 

I am a 2B holder dreaming of ridding a superbike as well. But i think the govenment did it right to let new ridders to gain experience by ridding a small bike instead of letting them go wild on the road.

hahaha. yeah. of course I know that too being a driver first turn rider.

hahaha. well, I'm lucky there's only 1 kind of license also right cause I can still be able to drive any cars I like. hahahaha.

 

It's just a suggestion so nothing serious consideration should be put into it. It's not about jealously or anything near that as I believe that it's all boil down into the driver/rider with the control of the car.

If it really is going to the 3 types of license tier

a Madza RX-7/8 will definately be a hot car, but insurance company will surely go all out to increase that price to rocket high ya?

There are also fast bikes in 2B, Like TZM or other 2 stroke bikes stories which are heavily mod with a fast rider as well. Nothing is wrong with that.

 

I am a 3 holder dreaming of ridding a supercar as well. But when I first got my license, I also didn't imagine if I could really handle a scuderia or a murcielago.

 

If weight is really the concern, how much would these type of car weight? mostly around the same as a normal sedan car ya?

And for the technology now, A class 2 litre sportsbike will be lighter then a class 2a sports bike

But with all the technologies implemented, I'm sure any drivers without much skills will be able to handle it too right.

Drivers or Riders are the same, I think it will be better for drivers to gain experience and learn before letting them go wild on the road.

i personally feel that it should be 2b and then open class.. having 2a and class 2

just dosent make sense, even the driving lessons are the same for class 2a and 2, bottom line its just waste of time.

Maybe should have auto license as well since more auto scooters appearing. Had been riding auto scoot since day 1, probably forgot how to change gear liao ;p
