1. Done a defrag recently?

2. In that processes screen, try sorting by User Name and look for process running under your name / userID. Some of these are custom installed apps / utilites and you may not need them at all times. Uninstall them or deactivate them from auto starting up. Manually start them up when needed. But make sure they are the correct ones before doing it.

3. Checked for spyware recently?

Just some areas to check for.

i agree that it could be a spyware problem coz a labtop will not become slow 'suddenly'. If it is overloaded by applications, then it shld be getting slower 'gradually' as you dun install everything at once.

does it happened randomly during boot up / reboot? it sounds like a corrupted system files or memory hardware failure.

i would suggest you do a backup of all your important files and do a fresh install (if not, full system recovery) .. it is a good idea to fresh install your machine since the os had been running for 2yrs. during this 2 yrs, many installation and un-installations, lots of junk files created, etc .. a fresh installation will restore your machine to its original speed.

if you're not a geek in pc, you might want to get your friend to help you out on the fresh installation, as the drivers can be messy ...

yeah.. I do agree with almondking that reinstalling of your windows is a better and quicker idea for your pc. Make sure you do find those CD drivers of your hardware, esp your internet modem drivers where the rest can be downloadable, first before you format. You wont want your laptop not able to connect to the internet after that.

Hi Cyanide14,

This link might help your investigation.

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic30262.html

They mention to .zip the minidumps and investigate the logs.

Alternatively, you may google and find out more about this error:

http://www.google.com.sg/search?hl=en&q=BCCode+%3A&btnG=Search&meta=

But, I think it's a waste of time to check them...

Make a wise choice, reinstall the OS and remember to get the drivers before installation.

Good luck.

suggested steps to salvage:

1) Backup

+ backup your data (preferably into external storage... HDD or CDR/DVDR)

2) Housekeeping

+ computers slow down for many reasons and one major issue is memory, both in RAM & HDD. For RAM, stop the unnecessary processes (check your startup) by either using the "Task Manager" or "System Configuration Utility" (run msconfig command)... if not sure, get help from friends from IT line

+ most NB run lots of apps in the background to enhance user experience but they take up system resources. no problem when new, but when more apps are installed/run, temp & compressed files are generated, the machine starts to crawl

+ uninstall programs that you don't need

+ if your available HDD space is low, its time to clear out the old unused files. transfer to backup storage or delete as necessary. seeking time for data is longer when HDD space is low

+ from System Tools, run "Disk Cleanup" (free up disk space) and then "Disk Defragmenter" (reorganise the fragmented files)

+ simple reasoning... imagine searching for a pair of shoes in a warehouse with lots of junk all over the place compared to another warehouse that has things properly organised

3) Check for Virus

+ close all applications, then do a virus scan... remember to update your virus list before scan

+ if you think your virus scan s/w is not good enough, strongly recommend you use the free "Housecall" online scan from Trend Micro as its quite complete

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

+ if you don't have antivirus s/w, recommend you use Avast! Home Edition (freeware but need annual activation but at no cost)

4) Check for Adware/Spyware

+ if you don't have a adware/spyware scanner, install the free Ad-Aware 2007 from Lavasoft

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

+ after installation, remember to run an update before running a complete scan

+ delete whatever critical/tracking threats found (guess there'll be lots)

+ a lot of adware/spyware comes from free programs... one of the most risky stuffs is free animated screen savers

5) Power down & restart system

+ shutdown completely, wait for few seconds then startup

+ do not use restart

6) Check if faster

these basic steps usually work for most of my friends and clients

if still no improvements, then bo pian liow... have to do system recovery procedures coz there could be tons of reason why your NB go on "strike"

e.g. system registry is messed up (especially if you regularly install & uninstall programs), certain windows DLL corrupted, bad sectors in your HDD, etc. the funny looking error (displayed with blue screen if i'm not wrong) is quite typical of system corruption and/or when certain files required are stored in sector that has gone bad.

System Config Suggestion:

If you happen to do system restore, strongly suggest you reconfigure your system as such:

a) partition HDD to C: and D: drives... use C: for Windows and programs, D: for data. leave at least 15GB for C: especially if you are using XP

b) after the initial installation of all necessary programs in C:, prepare a "good & clean" copy of system by running an image backup of the whole C: drive. can use s/w such as Acronis True Image Home

c) if possible, store this backup image on external storage (burn to DVD better still)

this setup is especially useful as you will be able to restore the "good & clean" image with most programs already ready instead of setting up from scratch:

i) when infected by virus/adware/spyware and cannot fully clean system files, simply format C: restore

ii) when system get corrupted, simply format C: restore

iii) when HDD crash, simply buy new HDD, partition and restore

"Triple-Gate" Protection:

Typically, every PC/NB should employ the "triple-gate" protection:

1) Anti-virus

2) Anti-Adware/Spyware

3) Firewall (hardware or software)

If buy, lots of good options available in the market. But if you want free ones, I would recommend:

Anti-virus... Avast! Home (daily updates, compatible with most programs)

Anti-Adware/Spyware... Ad-Aware 2007 (manual update/scanning, realtime online protection available only for paid version)

Software Firewall... Comodo Firewall Pro (free)

Hope these tips are useful

may all be well and happy

as for me, when my travelmate tend to run slow , i reformat the whole thing. well at least backup first.

then reinstall everything and it runs like lightning speed already.

tried installing mcaffee ever since then, pc up runing like a horse. since it can detect most spywares and malicious stuffs. (provided you update yer mcaffee every now and then)

For every 7 pounds you lose, you gain one horsepower.

I usually run the "MSCONFIG" or the "REGEDIT" program to disable unwanted stuff that runs during booting up & hog yr physical RAM memory & resources. Its just as effective as reformating yr PC. Sometime these unwanted stuff are put there automatically by spywares or adwares when surfing the net.

this is a good but only suitable when you are proficient enough to know what exactly you are doing or disabling.

wouldn't recommend any newbie to touch the registry keys and/or services :cheeky:

Tech-talk wise, I don't think simply disabling Startup items would solve most of the "slowness" problems.

There are other factors that can affect the startup performance of a PC.

Windows Services, installed fonts, a basic graphics chip that shares system memory...just to name some.

But as an advice for newbies...it's better if you start anew rather than scrimping by disabling important stuff that the Windows operating system itself might depend on.

From a fresh new system, inculcate good habits such as not installing small software that might form the bits-and-pieces of trash that might pile up at the end of the year.

Maintaining the efficiency of a computer is more or less the same idea as maintaining the cleanliness of one's room. Heck, this could be one of the aspects of computing in general.

another tip here is always backup yr registry by performing a "export" to yr root directory when yr comp is new. Just type "regedit" at the START - RUN function, then click "file" , select "All", click "export" to root directory. The meaning of "export" is actually save as; use the current date as the name of the file you are saving.

Always do a "export" before installing new software or otherwise, export every 3 months or so.

When yr comp one day faces problem or become very slow, you can recall back yr registry by selecting "import" of the latest Registry that you saved. This will restore it to the same condition as before. Any spyware or adwares or redundant registry entries or unwanted startups which are hogging yr CPU cycles & resources will be disabled.

Most comp problems can be solved or prevented by having backups of registry & having a good anti-virus programs such as McAfee or Norton.

Of coz having sufficient RAMS is the pre-requisite too for avoiding slowness. XP need at least 1GB RAM & Vista needs 2GB. Dun believe what the packaging says about minimum RAM, it is experience that matters.

Heya,

One advice though: There's a small risk when you choose the manual registry backup and restore method. You risk corrupting one or more applications if these particular applications so happen to modify the registry in the interim.

Use the System Restore provided in Windows XP and Vista. They do save selected registry settings too alongside important Windows files, in the event Windows misbehaves and you need to sorta turn back the clock to how it was the way before. And yep, you can use this before doing a potentially dangerous action, like installing any application or driver.

Perhaps by adding more Rams, it may help.
