Are you talking about your Motorola Cable Modem?

From my experience, nothing should pass through your router, even simple intrusions such as Ping, etc...need not worry.

Do a trace route program to determine the hops that are causing the lags. If it is a starhub hop, bring up to starhub to address.

Current rides: Ducati 999 and X9 500 SL

most routers have admin console..

to view the connections, including computer name and MAC address.

how many PC in ur home? if there's more connection in router console, that's someone intruding ur network.

trace route? just type "tracert **.**.**.** ip address" in command prompt.

but i dont think this will help, coz someone is directly connecting ur network, not from other networks.

make ur router secure? that depends on router/switch functions.

best is to assign static ip to ur home pc/laptop. disable dynamic ip feature.

most wireless password systems are not easy to crack, just dont put common words :thumb:

there are many wireless in HDBs nowadays, i can detect about 7 networks from my room, some are even stronger signal strength.

so if ur network is password protected, it should be okay..

suppose you are using wifi connection... set your security properly and it'll be very difficult (or almost impossible) for others to tap into your network... those very pro hackers dun count lah

depending on your router's functionality, a suggested security setup would be:

1) strong passwords... at least 8 alphanumeric

2) static IP assigned to each PC and/or notebook... once there is a IP conflict, u know someone is using your IP. btw, others can find out your IP by using an IP sniffer program

3) don't broadcast your SSID so that it is less easy for others to know your "network ID" for hooking up. btw, others can also find out your SSID by using a sniffer program

4) deploy encryption. WEP is more convenient but less secure than WPA:TKIP+AES. if use WEP, use the 128 bits 26 hex digits version

5) use mac address filter and permit only identified network devices to join network. btw, mac address can be cloned

6) change your passwords and encryption keys regularly

7) if desired, can also deploy website blocking

8) if desired, can configure firewall to block all ports except those you need

one of my friends tried configuring his wireless network for DHCP with encryption, but assigned static IP for "authorised" users. then he block all IP and allow only those "authorised" IP (nos towards the end) to access internet. so someone happily break encryption keys, connected to network liow but still cannot use internet coz his DHCP assigned IP is blocked... can try this for fun :p

happy playing around with your router & firewall settings

:goodluck:

may all be well and happy

haha, nice to have fun that way.. but what if the sniffer get angry and hack ur pc, since he's in the network.. :)

I'm using starhub 2nd best plan(the one cheaper than the $100+ plan) and I still find it slow at times.Thing is EVEN THE ROUTER's password can be hacked by others so change it often.

This is what a friend from Army intelligence told me, apparently he learnt those white hat hacking kinda thing whereby he can send you something and once you accept, a push of a button in his com can send your disc drive ejecting and closing lol.

anyway if you want speed, use direct instead of wireless.

Which is why in computing knowledge circles such as you, I and the peeps here (including people who are in I.T.) usually advise novice computer users not to succumb to social engineering.

Don't accept files from people that you don't know

Don't give out passwords, not even personal information

Exit from websites that you feel is not making you comfortable (eg scams, etc...)

I have multiple computers at home and my whole family uses them. What I usually do is make sure all of them are equipped with the necessary. AV, simple firewall, PeerGuardian -- most importantly, I administrate our only router to make sure everybody's connected and happy. Can be a hair raising experience when my sis barges to my room screaming "what happen to internet?!"

Enough digressing, as long as you know the basics of simple and habitual computing safety ;)

I believe you can access anywhere, probably its the bandwidth that is limited..perhaps you surf to a certain limit and you can't access anything else until the next month :giddy:

Joseph, this is really good! Better than ZoneAlarm and allows for convenient yet granular control :hungry:
