Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a car and came across some articles about CNG powered vehicles. I find it very attractive as the cost of running the car is very cheap, with gas prices being more than 1/2 of petrol.

Cons of running a CNG car would include the lack of refueling facilities (2 in SG at last count) and the fact that one would need to go through a conversion process which costs about S$2-3K, adds about 70kg to the car's weight.

Has anyone driven a CNG car and would like to share his/her views? Are there also any car distributors (authorised or parallel) who bring in manufacturer built CNG cars?

For private cars, all are retro-fitted.

With the petrol prices sky-rocketing, it does make economic sense to retro-fit one.

It was announced that by end of next year, there will be more CNG refill stations in Singapore at Jln Buroh, Serangoon Road. There will even be one in JB.

I, for one will be keeping track of this development. Can you imagine, having a total of 60 litre of petrol, and 50 litre of CNG in a car. From Singapore to Hatyai, direct, no fuel stop.

i like the idea of cng too... i have ask a few taxi driver in jb who are now using the cng and petrol for their car.... max tank (im not sure how many liters) according to those cab driver is about 15 ringgit... and according to him can go about 200 klik or a lil more... i guess it depends on how you drive your car... also check with him on the performance wise, he was saying it the same.... jus imaagine 1 full tank 15 ringgit versus 1 full tank petrol 100 ringgit.... i might go to jb for the conversion if i have car... but the problem is im not sure if the lta will approve it... anyone got idea?

I think the taxis there are LPG, not CNG. Can anybody confirm?

They are CNG. As a matter of fact, M'sia already has many CNG stations, while S'pore now only has 1

CNG conversion is legal. CNG top up station limited. No known side effects as yet. Conversion costs $2-3k. In car switch allows instant switch to petrol induction mode. I would probably consider a hybrid car running on electricity at this point.

If you are on the move alot, that few thousands dollars will break-even fast.

you can get a cheap big car with a huge boot to fit the CNG tank. no need to worry about fuel consumption. (petrol)

or if you are lazy to top up often, get a MPV and convert the last row to hold 2 CNG tanks.

iirc there are 60L and 80L tanks.

SGI kit from Melchers (OMVL from Italy) = $3.5k

Mixer kit (Galileo from Argentina) = $2k.

Slow down abit, smell the air and enjoy the scenery.

Caught the touring bug once again!

The taxis here are all CNG. I only know that some taxis in Bangkok are running LPG.

:)

thats not right. MANY of the taxis are still diesel powered.

Presently, the only CNG refuelling station is in Jurong Island, and need special permission to required to refuel there.

By Jan 2008, a new CNG refuelling station on Mandai Road, just off the Woodlands Road junction will be ready.

By end Dec 2008, two more CNG refuelling at Jalan Buroh, and Serangoon North will be ready.

:)

Does it really matter how many such stations are in Singapore when JB has 4 stations, selling at one-third the price, and there is no three-quarter tank rule for CNG

But some are saying the authority might impose a special tax on all CNG vehicles at the end of 2009...

Steps to do a proper KNNBCCB with middle finger.

1. Bow down slightly, looking intensely at objective

2. Like a raging bull, hop and jog slowly towards objective

3. Take your left palm and slap it hard on the right mid-arm with a SLAP!

4. With charisma, raise right arm, whilst showing middle finger (with left palm trapped in bend right arm)

5. Shout! KNNBCCB
