From my mechanic's mill, so far the internal battery I know comes with the old type of IU, which has an 'extra' cylindrical extension on the side, with a slot at the top for flat screwdrivers to go in.

I heard the internal battery is rated 6V for those old old bikes which runs on 6V batteries to make up for the 12 V it required.

New IU devices don't have this. Again, pardon me if I am wrong, please.

can i connect the IU directly to a 12v battery anot ?

Do read the voltage specs on the IU unit ! If it says 12volts then can, otherwise

better not, unless like Naz said there may be a convertor/battery inside to fit to

a 6volt - old type bikes.

Hi Guys,

Got a interesting topics going on around, Those small batteries inside the IU unit is to keep(maintain) the serial numbers in the chip memory- whenever you pass thru the gantry your serial number is reflected together with the amount deduction...you can try it on the parking lots using ERP system- If you observe the display closely - you can see the same serial number plus the deductions.

*As for portable usage ~ 2 X 9v battery and adding a 12V resistor to the IU(+) it will help the battery last much longer and adding that "On - Off" switch.... it would be an advantage...when not in use or storing it away. stuffs can get at sim lim tower.

Hope this helps.

*note:modifying is your responsible and risk you have taken.

As for myself I've fixed it permantly to the handle bar directed to bike battery, now most car parks are using ERP system- save me the trouble to mounting and dismounting most of the time. I know it is an ugly piece sticking at you. what to do for the convenience.

Hi... For those who have removed the IU from the bike, can I know where you get the Y-type screwdriver to unscrew the IU from the bracket? :cheeky:

mine is under my pillion seat too, and it works well if i dun have a pillion. if i have a pillion, then she\he has to squeeze into my seat for a moment as i go past the gantry.

troublesome actually, me was thinking of fitting some anti-slip surface or the rubber suction cups to the bottom of my IU and sticking the IU on my rear end tail if i'm going town. :cheeky:

I don't believe there is any internal battery in the IU that requires you to hook up to an external battery all the time. Even if there is, it takes a long time to drain.

My bike's previous owner didn't hook up the IU at all. Assuming he didn't do so the entire time he owned the bike, that must be for a period of 3 years. It worked when I hooked it up.

Definitely the are internal batteries (2x) in the IU.

What the purpose and function of the internal batteries is anyone guess. But here is what I know for a fact :

- If the internal batteries are flat, even with external 12v power, the IU will not work.

- The IU needs just 6v to operate.

- With working internal batteries, even without 12v power, the gantry can still detect your IU, but it will not deduct toll. You will receive a letter from LTA to bring the vehicle to get your IU inspected at a Inspection Centre. No fine.

- Leaving the IU not attached to a power supply for a prolonged period will leave you with a dead IU.

I did post the internal pics of the IU previously. As there are a few "operated" IUs still in my possession, I can always snap a few shots upon request.

actually I wanna ask if erp IUs from other bikes can be used.

For example, only use 1 erp IU for 2 different bikes?

I have the same situation as you because don't use my bike often.

Using external battery has the only advantage of portability but everytime you want to use the IU you must have fresh batteries. This is quite troublesome, especially last minute need to pass ERP, and quite expensive.

I also found out that, after two dead IUs, if the IU has been disconnected from the power supply for a prolonged period it will die. The IU is powered by two internal batteries, if these two batteries are totally drained, you will not be able recharged them subsequently.

From my experience, and for my usage, a slip-on IU is the best. The slip-on is adapted from the mountain bike cat-eye nite lite, so it's very convenient to mount and dismount the IU quickly. The power supply is from the bike, which I fixed a connector which will mate with the IU. Now I would need less than 2mins get the IU in or out of the bike.

Word of caution, cutting the IU power-cord means you void the 5 year warranty.

:bounce:

hi..cutting the power-cord wont void the warranty..it will void when the iu is crack or water go in or bar code not there or yellow seal remove..

when cutting the power-cord remember 2 remove the 'fuse'from the wire.. :)

Ah i managed to unscrew the y-type screw using a flat head screw driver. Any bro who wants to remove the bracket from your IU can try it too... IU still working fine after 2 weeks being disconnected from battery.

Now just have to see whether erp gantry can detect it under my seat with pillion on top :cheeky:

question: if the IU has to be constantly powered, how can it stay charged if my bike does not have a battery at all? planning to make it portable on my scram, use it only when necessary coz i hardly enter erp. help any1?

question: if the IU has to be constantly powered, how can it stay charged if my bike does not have a battery at all?

Bike has no battery doesn't means it has no power supply otherwise how would your lights and horn work ?

planning to make it portable on my scram, use it only when necessary coz i hardly enter erp. help any1?

By portable, it means that the IU is powered by external battery and not taking power from the bike. You can cut the IU wire and connect it to a 9V connector. So just connect the IU to a 9V battery and have the IU somewhere (on the handle bar, in your backpack) when passing ERP gantry.

By removable, it means to use bike to power the IU but the power cable is a snap-on type, so IU is mounted on the bike, and power cable mated with the bike's power cable by the snap-on connector whenever require to pass ERP gantry.

ok so wat if i leave it permanently on my scram but hardly ride my bike, does it also mean tt i have to charge it from time to time as my bike doesnt come with a batt?

No one has an official answer to this question. But from personal experience, an IU left without power for 2 years is a dead IU.

A word of caution. The IU is intended to be permanently mounted on the designated vehicle. Any deviation from the intended use or installation may constitute an illegal modification. So do so at your own risk.

The best place for an IU to reside is on a shelf collecting dust.

Anyway, I use a 2 X 4aaa battery pack to power my portable IU. I should have used AA battery pack though, cos AA batteries are cheaper. By removing the IU clear cover, the battery pack fits into the space, so the entire thing can fit into a leather IU pouch.

Whenever I need the IU i just drop it into my waist pouch or backpack, leave it on. After park bike, switch off the IU to save battery. Works for carparks too, but for some carparks gotta take out the IU and wave it at the sensor to work.

has anyone modded it with a switch and external power source?

eg. battery > wires > switch > removable IU.

currently, my IU is stored under the seat, when i wish to use it, i just velcro it to a metal support on my bars that i fabricated at seng kwang. the pek chek thing is that everytime i want to use it, must remove the seat, take out the IU, velcro to the support and tidy up the long wire running along the underside of my fuel tank before i put the seat back in place.
