What went wrong???? ..... Why??????

Story to share at UM ..... saw 1 Black FBC P200 mileage just almost 10km yesssss P200 FBC plate mileage just near 10km !! .... the condition let the pics tells the story!! ...

In summary ENGINE OVER HEATED due to Pre Ignition and Detonation !!

http://www.dansmc.com/plugtempchart.jpg

Looking at the plug .. it's more likely a Pre Ignition problem.

http://www.ngk.com/glossaryImages/68.jpg

Looking at the Piston it's more likely detonation occured.

http://www.theultralightplace.com/images/piston3b.jpg

and because due to foreign object in the engine block like broken valve and other parts which affect the system , the piston broke apart

http://www.theultralightplace.com/images/piston7.jpg

These symtoms are not caused by EO but

it's more to AFR, engine timing, compression ratio, mixture temperature, cylinder pressure and also wrong fuel octane causes which makes the engine overheated. Over heating can also lead to piston fry from blocked/plugged catalytic converter in the exhaust system !!! ..

If there is no EO in the engine then your engine wall will KABOOOOOM!!

If your EO is not changed for long period, sludge will occur and it is known as Black Death!! ... and Black Death can also happen if you used wrong eo additives!!!

http://www.carbibles.com/images/sludge2.jpg

So guys do have a habit to check your spark plug condition regularly since at least basically the signs and symptoms can be read by looking at the spark plug condition befor hand !!

Change when necessary as it just from $5 - $7 a pc rather than to pay $$$$!!

Do change your EO at intervals period be it every 2k km or 5k km!!

check this link for nice info and pic on Pre Ignition, Detonation and what it can cause to your bike piston!! ...

just my humble thoughts only .... hehehehe

I think Pulsar's FC is over hyped. Its always a tradeoff between power and FC. I am sure light bikes with low compression ratio like YBR 125, CBF 150, FZ16 and Tiger 200 have similar FC as Pulsar but somehow pulsar enjoys the reputation of being the most fuel efficient bike in its class ;)

I beg to differ. Take a Phantom for example - sort of the same class/power class as the Pulsar, right ? Nowhere near it in terms on fuel consumption. We are talking here about a couple of hundreds of km difference on a fuel tank, or more.

And I know for researching it that the CBF 150 and the Fazer don't come close neither. The Pulsar's reputation is not a reputation, it's a simple fact.

Agree there will always be a tradeoff with power, but since we're talking 200cc and below, we can't seriously be talking power anyway.

Have a look around at other bike's FC and you'll see, and we're not even talking sports bike, but scramblers and more importantly touring bikes, even with the tradeoff in power the FC is just not matching the Pulsar.

Hard to believe, but when you look it up, and more importantly share experiences with other riders, you realize there's no hype, this bike is running more on air than fuel

Omg. I have no idea whatsoever where the spark plug even is. How to check!!!!

Relax.. your bike is like 2 weeks old. Your spark plugs are brand new.

Uncle MJ, stop scaring the kid lah, he's already freaking out when his bike is all new, now you start talking about DETONATION, he's gonna PM us all for sure asking how to prevent his bike from exploding !

Yhang, next time you meet with other Pulsarians, ask about the spark plug, they'll show you.

And relak. Your bike is fine, and brand new. Wash it, lube the chain, change the oil and enjoy the ride.

and relax ! (Maybe if I say it enough times it will actually have the desired effect..)

@mjbs64: oh btw, wanted to ask you, where did you get your spark plug tool to measure the gap ? Did i understand correctly when I was told if the gap is getting bigger, the spark plug is aging - or is it the other way around ? What's the ideal gap for left and right - they are not the same are they ?

autobacs bukit batok !! ...

acording to NGK website ...

Do I need to Gap my plugs?

Maybe, but likely not. Many plugs are pre-gapped for their most popular applications, however, the gap can be altered if the plug is dropped or mishandled in packing/shipping. Therefore even if the plugs are supposedly preset for your motor, it is always wise to check the gap on each plug prior to installing.

Proper Gapping

In most cases the factory set gap should conform to your vehicle specifications. However if it is necessary to widen the gap, do so with a tool that only pulls back on the ground electrode without touching the center electrode or the porcelain. To close the gap on a plug, gently tap the plug, electrode first on a hard surface.

Should I gap my Iridium Plugs?

The manufacturers say NO.

This is because most people do not know how to properly gap a spark plug, and the center electrodes on the ultra-fine iridium can easily snap if mishandled. There is no warranty for snapped center electrodes. The manufacturers say an iridium spark plug will run so much better than a traditional plug, even if it is not gapped for that motor, that they would prefer you just leave it rather than risk snapping the center electrode.

Personally, we at sparkplugs.com, gap our iridium plugs for our own vehicles (we’re rebels). If you insist on gapping your iridium plug, please refer to Proper Gapping for instruction.

What is the maximum I can open or close the gap?

NGK doesn't recommend adjusting the spark plug gap .008".

The reason for this is the ground electrode and center electrode won't line up properly, hindering spark plug performance.

Can old spark plugs be cleaned?

Yes, you can clean spark plugs, but in most cases its not worth it.

We do not recommend it for a number of reasons. In short, you will not get the same performance from a cleaned plug as a new plug. This is because electricity likes sharp edges to discharge from. A used plug will already have wear, and cleaning may contribute to that wear even more (depending on the cleaning method used). If you want to try it, the below cleaning procedure was supplied to us by an old motor head. Good luck!

If the firing end is wet, make sure you clean the spark plug with a quick drying cleaner. (Examples: contact cleaner or brake cleaner).

Sand blast the spark plug using low air pressure and use a dry compound.

Completely blow all the sand from the spark plug.

Using a wire brush clean the threads and re-gap.

NOTE: Insufficient cleaning of the spark plug may lead to spark plug failure in a very short period of time. Clean the spark plug thoroughly to avoid problems later. Remember, if a spark plug is fouling it's usually a result of engine side factors or incorrect heat range selection.

hmmm OR

another simple option is .. buy new spark plugs!! ... hehehehehee

New spark plug can save 5% on FC ... hehehehe

Cheers!!

Phantom is a cruiser with a big rear tyre and more weight in the rear of the bike. The FC of a new phantom is close to 40 km/ltr same as Avenger 200.

Most Phantoms that you see on the road are around 8-10 years old. Their reliablity is unquestionable. So its a complete package and not just about FC.

I am not against pulsar. All I am saying is that its all about tradeoff. FC is the most important thing for a Indian rider and hence the Indian motorcycle mfrs will sacrifice anything for FC.

They also tell you that their EO will last 10k kms. So you can imagine what their priority is; running cost or durability ;)

Here is an article about twin spark plug technology:

http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/experts-unsurehypetwin-spark-technology/371579/

If really twin spark plug technology was the reason for better FC/power, Honda, Yamaha et el would have had it in their bikes long ago. The technology is not new and not something that Bajaj invented.

Well, when I look at other 2B bikes, it's clear to me that the Pulsar has a better FC and that's without sacrificing any power or efficiency for the use I have of it.

Saying that it's efficiency is a hype doesn't make sense to me. Now if you say that it's efficiency comes at the cost of power that's another debate :)
