I have a thought... (Quite a lengthy one at that too...)

Exhaust headers are made of thermally highly conductive materials. After the bike's engine is killed, after about 10 minutes, while the engine is still too hot to touch, the exhaust headers, which can glow red hot under full load, are cool to touch.

This demonstrates the very good thermal conductive and heat dissipation qualities of the exhaust header/downpipes. But because of this, in static situations where theres no airflow past the engine/exhaust headers, the area around it can become very warm, again due to the efficiency at which heat is conducted away from the headers. But our inner legs and family jewels certainly don't appreciate this do they?

When wrapping up the headers with insulating tape, we're effectively going against the designed heat dissipation qualities of the exhaust header itself. What effect does this have on the performance of the engine, I have no idea. But if the headers are designed with such good heat dissipation properties, surely there must be a reason??

Food for thought.

Designed for heat dissipation? or is it that metal is the only material that can withstand that amount of heat?

Food for thought.

Think the primary reason why steel is used is cos it can tahan the heat.

Alum will melt, titanium headers abit expensive.

From what I read, the thermotec wrap will disperse heat equally along the entire wrapped tubing and insulate but will not over insulate? There won't be any hotspot as such. (Ie.... the region just after the exhaust port is usually the hottest.)

And I reckon the region furthest away will be the coolest.

Somehow I supposed the wrapping will kind of distribute the heat along the

wrapped area.

Anyway, so far my balls and thighs and left calf(near the rear header) are comfortably cool on a hot sunny day wearing shorts.

No adverse effect so far as I can tell. Used to get scorched red hot skin on the left leg due to the heat.... Now? Woohooo....

hi guys...currently taking my 2A now..tot of getting a ducati monster after i pass..

guess it has been asked over and over again by newbies like me...

just wanna check with u guys few questions hope u can clear my doubts

- how much is one monster for 1st / 2nd hand respectively?

-maintainance wise (scaled 1-10 - 1 cheap ----10 exp)?

- top speed ?

thanks....looking forward to ur facvourable replies. monster is definately a cool bike.

- how much is one monster for 1st / 2nd hand respectively?

$14-16k, depending on model. Monster dark is cheaper than the standard, and M400S comes with double disc brakes !!! (In japan only I think, unless you ask minerva to import)

-maintainance wise (scaled 1-10 - 1 cheap ----10 exp)?

3 bottles engine oil every 5000km $36

Change/Clean air filter, change oil filter, engine oil, spark plugs, adjust valves every 10,000km ($250-$400 depending on difficulty)

Change belts every 20,000-30,000km ($70)

Tyres, chain, bulbs, brakes etc are standard.

- top speed ?

Many people say 140, mine hit 170 before, but I often cruise at 110-120max because theres no fairing. You want speed, get a ZX4 or RVF.

wow seems like a new monster cost quite abit huh...

for me i'll be looking into 2nd hands monsters...guess there isnt much nowadays.

neo care to share with me wat kind of 400ccs monsters are there?

seems like there is duke or dark or something?

seeems like maintainence wise its ard the same as normal 2A sport bikes or S4...

i've seen ur bike tru the gallery and i must say that ur bike seems like a good buy. damn if i've noe it i wud have rushed my 2A license. due to work gotta take it slowly.

well well nice bike u got. damn... how i wish i am the one owning it. but why sell?

Posted

You can buy my bike ma, its not sold yet :D

I'm selling it for financial reasons, but I'm quite reluctant to sell it mainly because I want to see it in good hands.

The first few models are basically the same, but the newer model (2001 and newer) ones comes in Dark and standard version. The Dark version comes with matt black finish, and some cheaper parts (suspension, covers etc), but honestly, I can't tell the difference, except the matt finish looks damn nice!

The thermo wrap will last you... the problem is will your pipes last you. If it rains or if some reason the thermo wrap gets wet it'll cause your pipes to rust. You must run the engine to force the pipes to heat up to get rid of the moisture. There is this water proof spay on...but how well it does its job is anyone's guess.

However, it definately reduce the engine heat and also minimise the power loss due to overheating.

Think twice before you decide to put it on.

Well.....will it rust or not, I dunno.....but the exhaust system seems to be quite corrosion resistance......Honestly, I suspect it's stainless steel in fact.....correct me if I'm wrong.

If it's stainless steel, I'll be worry free about corrosion.....

My main worry was the wrap would deterioate under rain and shine. I'll be putting it to the test.

Considering that the exhaust is so damn hot.... Any water/moisture will get evapourated straight away.

Careful not to let oil onto the wrap when u change engine oil.

It will SMOKE like hell!!!!

hi all duke riders... have some qns to ask.

1. anyone knows which shops curently selling 916/996? was thinking of trading in my old r1 for one.

2. any common problems regarding the 2 models? (esp electrical problems)

3. read earlier on that the 10k servicing cost 800 bucks. anyone can break down the costs for me?

4. does the insurance costs more than an r1?

Posted

1) Great choice!

2) The newer 996 will have lesser problems compared to the 916

3) I don't have experience with Ducati superbike engines, but I think the 10k service is oil change, oil filter change, air filter change, adjust valves (4 valves per cylinder for superbikes).

4) Insurance should cost about the same as an R1 (Yamaha and Ducati are in the same price range)

and, I like your member number!!!!

$800 also include belt change.

The insurance is slightly cheaper than Jap's bike. Go to minevra for ur insurance.

Good luck and see u soon on the road. :cheer:

most probably aimming for a 916 cos, to be honest, due to price factor.

It's not that the belt last only 10k. Just that it's advice to change because if the belt snap, the result will lead to piston jam. Be safe, not sorry.

I have never rode a 916 or 996, I think they are the same. Sorry that I might not help much with ur question. :cheer:
