The tach and digital console is just a display, the main computer is deep within the bike. I think. Tomorrow I try starting the bike without the display connected.

Anyway, I usually wait for the fuel pump to prime first, and the key logo to go off before pressing the start button. It can be started when the 999 words are displayed though.

yea, i always wait for the fuel pump to prime first and when im in a rush, i prod the starter after the fuel pump is done. but its always best to wait for the bike to finish its diagnostic run (which is after the 999 logo disappears.)

your friends problem could be rain, the 999 has its problems with rain (like all other ducatis) but then again, my tacho was replaced at the first intermediate servicing (5k). the software went haywire as the servicing logo couldnt be removed. it could be the tacho degrading furthur over time. mine is the 2003 model, u could ask him whether it was replaced before coz ive never had problems ever since.

oh! i remember before it was changed, it was pretty susceptible to weather as it misted up before.

A fresh battery really does wonders. Now my bike starts within two cranks, even in cold mornings! But its difficult to start when warm, sometimes just refuses to catch... Wierd....

Hmm... could be the weather too I guess.

We rode thru the rain quite a lot, but there were spaces where the erratic weather got super hot. Not to mention the stops where the bikes basically emitted lotsa steam and vapor from the water evaporating off the wet engines and internals..

Our run was Cameron, Gua Musang, and thru Grik Highway... lotsa moments at high altitudes thru clouds and fog too. Moisture, basically. I'm guessing they also played a part.

So back to my question. Assuming that opening up the head and spraying the connectors don't work... where can he take it for servicing, besides Minerva??

He got something against Minerva izzit?

I don't think any other shops have the equiptment to properly diagnose the CAN engine management system, unless you go try BMW. Same system.

Nothing against Minerva.

There's such a thing as "looking at all possible avenues/options before committing to one".

Anyway, quite good stuff, this CAN electrical system. Only downside is that a single point of failure along the bus potentially takes out everything.

there kallang cycle, opposite the duke workshop in kallang.

why not do some self diagnostics. get someone who has the same tacho to swap and test to see whether its a defective tacho. if thats the case and i assume in your case that the bikes not underwarranty, get a replacement from eugene (not much choice there). eugenes not really a bad guy. u gotta sweet talk him, u might get a deal ;) (FYI, heard its at least 1k.)

u could be adventurous, open the whole tacho and get contact cleaner (yea it works for everything, haha) into it. dry thoroughly and give it a go. look out edge seals/gaskets. dont want water seeping inside.

when dealing with 999 electrics, only minerva has all the equipment to do a full diagnostic test on the CAN system. believe me, u wouldnt want anyone else fiddling with yer dukes electrics. eugene is techinically sound, u wouldnt want anyone else touching yer bike

It actually simplifies troubleshooting, because it will give an error code when one of the sensors on the bus fails.

But I think in this case its a display problem. Like I said, I "think" the tacho/digital display is just a readout, not a computer. The bike might work with it disconnected.

I think for Ducati's especially the 999s (made "worse" by the CAN system),

Minerva is the place to go. (That's how a workshop should look like!)

The fact is they do it day in and day out, that's when the experience

comes in. (even though electrical problem's a ######)

The charge is not too exhorbitant. (It's offset by the cheaper parts that you order there as well)

yea its just a readout, the computer would be the ecu, near the battery.

A viewing is worth a thousand pics, hehe. Sorry, no pics yet.

I'm viewing another 996 SPS and yours.

Let's see if we can strike up a deal.

It probably simplifies troubleshooting... but in this case, the LED display is showing blank, well.. except that the backlight is still working.

But what if the bus wire snaps, or is broken somewhere. That's gonna a b1tch...

So I guess if cleaning the contacts via Obitrok's method doesn't work, it's gonna be a trip to Minerva... seeing as only they and they alone have the CAN diagnostics equipment.

Wow... Do not pass go, Do not collect $200. ;)

Where is the ad in the 'sales' section for the 996SPS mentioned a few posts back yesterday?

Had a good look in the classifieds but can't find it.

Can someone post the URL for me please?

Cheers

Robbo.

Thanks to all the 3-4 guys who PMed me. I'm sorry I've been busy adjusting to my work today after being away for a week.

To make things simple for all, how about this:

I'll ride the 996 to work on this Wed and Thu (my workplace is at 1179 Serangoon Road, Mah Pte Ltd) and those who are interested to view can come down between 9am to 7pm either days.

Sighhhh.... Think I won't be getting my 996 after all....

Stuck with the ST4, 996 doesn't have box.....

Until I rid off my ST4.....

Any ideas?

Can I get Minerva to buy in my ST4, then get the other party's bike?

All done via Minerva?
