Hey bros and sis,

just curious, when u guys do your u-turns from stationery position, do u do it while holding onto your half cluthc (1st gear), or do u kick up to 2nd gear and negotiate the turn?

even thou school teaches us to turn with 2nd gear, i find the bike jerking too vigorously to be negotiating the u-turn smoothly. so i personally prefer using half clutch or sometimes even turning in 1st gear w/o holding onto the clutch.

try a slight feather touch to the cluth to smoothen out the jerk

how about u guys? am i doing anything wrong, since everything the school teaches seems to have a good reason for it.

depends on your bike, the width of the turn , road condition , etc , some kups and scooter got no 1/2 cluth so u have to get use to the turning technique that's reuire by the bike.

and 1/2 cluth control is just another technique , the 180 stopee is also another technique...(i like the last one):cheeky:

the most important of all technique is , control......:dot:

you control the bike and not let the bike control you

if the roads end ....i go off road

one leg down, shift body weight to that leg, using it as pivot point , turn handle bars and rev engine at 2nd gear and pivot bike around your leg as the tyre smokes and spins on the tarmac. note: only for scrambler riders on knobbies lol~

not true.. the e-brake technique definitely will cause more accident if we were to apply it OTR..

Depends on gearing, turning radius / cornering speed and of course, type of motorcycle.

What can work for a high-riding bike (scrambler) won't work for a Phantom.

Bigger cc bikes can't run at full throttle without wheelspin.

It also depends on individual skill. I prefer 1st gear + clutch for a minimum radius turn and change to 2nd asap to accelerate away.

Using first also gives you a safety margin in case the idiot driver in front of you decides to jam brakes in the middle of the road.

If road is clear and you're first in line then by all means attack the u turn at second.... If your bike's 2nd gear is low enough for tight maneuvers or if your engine's torque curve can accomodate that gear in u turn speeds.

Conclusion: one size does not fit all.

agree with this. the bike makes a huge difference in the technique used

For class 2 bikes, I use 1st gear open clutch. For Class 2b bike, I use 2nd gear 'cos 1st gear not enough. For Class 2A bike, I think it's possible to use 2nd gear. I can't remember 'cos it was 4 years ago and I rode it for 7 months.

U turns are routine, try something more challenging...

Spiral ramps in MS or basement CPs!

Try not to do half clutch on them for long periods of time as several storeys of this leaves you with an overheating clutch!

For those spiral ramps, I use full clutch open, so I'm going around 20-25km/h. I have to half clutch if there's a slow car in front 'cos if too slow, bike might stall

In the driving centre, the instructors ask you to kick up to 2nd gear before negotiating the U-turn is because the bike is underpowered.

I believe for more powerful bikes in the class of 2A and 2, you need to half-clutch because the bikes are too powerful.

Half-clutch is my style of doing U-turn since my Super 4 days.

Biking is something that everyone can learn and enjoy! :goodluck:

If still got space to move to second gear, might as well go for secong gear, then half clutch properly...

The instructor acknowledge me that u got the right technique... That time i was in SSDC doing Road Revision.

If there is less space to pickup speed, i just went to do U-turn in first gear while half-clutching and throttle slighty.

Ur bike may jerks means that u'r clutch realesed abit far.

All u need to know the half-clutch technique/biting point, learned in Prac 1.
