Recently, my bike has been giving me problem whereby I need to throttle more in order to have a smooth ride else it will jerk until certain level of throttling is met. I just wash my carburetor back in June. And ever since December, every one month, I need to change my spark plug. Soon it's going to be third time. Mechanic told me my spark plug is "dirtied" by my engine oil.

So what's the real problem with my bike? Riding S4 PB.

Go check ur back wheel bearings first. Just leverage the back wheel up and grab the tire while rocking left and right. If it moves..the bearings gone liao. Do the same for the front wheel bearings but this time..rotate it..if can feel grinding..oso need replacement liao.

I have the same issue, my problem is my chain. Some part of my chain has harden. I replaced it and all those sound is gone.

hi guys... juz bought a version s last monday... i think theres some problem with my bike, which i found out only after purchase...

firstly, engine keeps dieing off when cold starting... increase idling or need to do setting??

2ndly, my friend's version s, when travelling at 5k rpm last gear, is 85km/hr... but my version s, when travelling at 5k rpm, is only showing 65-70km/h...

tested against a honda fit, my speedometer reads the same speed as the car, meaning when the car is at 80km/h, my speedo also is at 80km/h, only that my rpm is at around 6k+ rpm... what are the reasons that this cud be happening??

and also my version s seems too low, that even when i changed my rear shocks, i can still be scraping my belly pan against humps...

hope for some help n guidance here... thanks in advanced...

Hi everyone! First post! I bought a Version S about a year ago. I live in Korea tho, I hope you dont mind ^^

I want to ask, does anyone have an owner's manual or a service manual for CB400 version S? I CANNOT find one anywhere. Thanks!

iMustik -

Maybe you have a different sized sprocket. If your rear sprocket has more teeth you will go slower at the same RPM.

Scraping your belly pan...it's possible that your front shocks need their oil changed. This probably isn't the problem, but it's also possible that your triple clamps are mounted lower on your front forks than they could be. Easy to check and easy to fix. Hope this helps!

Hi all. A proud VerS owner for 5yrs here :cheer:. I need an advise. Which is a better choice for me in getting a full system exhaust. A fully welded hollow 4-2-1 system or a Hodaka joint 4-1 system. End can is aftermarket of coz. Riding habit is ard 90-110km/h. Seldom whack top speed coz lazy to go jb pump petrol nowdays. Travels mostly on expressway. SO which do type should i get? And is there any difference in performance between those 2 systems.

Ah pek any advice to it

Thanks Pure for ur advise... That was one possibility i had thought abt myself..

Heres a few others...

- Speedometer has been tampered with (not true - as speed was same when tested with other vehicles)

- gear ratio has been changed to improve low gear performance...

Anyone thinks that gear ratio changing is possible??

Non..if I were you..I replace with an original stock pipe complete. The original is tunened for performance related to the carbs. Unless..its for sole purpose of having and esthetic looks and sound..I have no comments.

What u mentioned is possible except for meter tampering..and the other two would be too much eo or type of eo u have in there now.

I have SCOURED the internet. I have even contacted Honda in my country, but since s4 wasn't sold there they couldn't get material for it. I tried contacting Honda in Singapore since English is spoken there, but they haven't responded to me. If you knew what forum to look in I would really appreciate it.

If anyone knows of a shop that can get/sell a manual/service manual PLEASE let me know. Thanks for the help!

I'm pretty sure that is for a bike like this.

I did find a parts catalog on this forum for the '95 NC31 and VTEC models, but no manuals.

Hmmm...my apology...that's for CB400F Super Sports not Super Four.

just managed to ride s4 on the expressway today, i feel that my bike will loose abit of power sometimes when i am maintaining the same throttle at 4th or 5th gear... and while i was riding in the rain today something weird happen to my clutch after shifting my gear up, normally immediately we will hear a "tuack" sound right? wad happen to me was, there was a delayed loud "tuack" sound after i shift up my gear and jerked a little. is there a problem with my ride? btw wen i asked about lowering exhaust to make way for side panniers, i was told by my mech that i might have problem with inspection, it tt true?

yah reagarding the "tak tak" sound i was also told by my brother that it is caused mainly due to uneven wear of the chains....i wonder wat may be the cause of it so we can avoid it ar other than just lubricating it? any ideas any 1? Btw is ist true that using engine oil to lube ur cahain is the best?

All chains need to be lubricated, even o-ring/x-ring chains. If you don't and the links get dry you'll get noise from the chain. I don't know if it's a "tak tak" sound or not. All you really need to do is periodically lubricate it. I have heard of another problem with chains though, and that is the alignment between the sprockets. If they aren't perfectly aligned it can cause problems with the chain (premature wear, kinked links, etc...) You can get shims and put them (usually I think) on the front sprocket to get them straight again. I have never run into this myself, and I'm not sure how you can tell if the sprockets aren't in alignment.

My thoughts on using engine oil, I'm sure it would work alright, but a good chain lube is designed for use on o-ring seals, designed not to fling off, and IMO way easier to apply.

You can tell when the link between the plates are unevenly shiny as they are 'grind' by the sproket teeth. The other thing is that when you row the bike backwards without load and be able to hear mild "krak..krak" sound. This call for the change to be slacken further and back alignment marks to be recheck..simply chain tension adjustment and swingarm markers be at the same marks.

It started that way from day one..eo is for lubrication. I always use it and best with SAE 80/90.yes, gear oil. The oil does not do any lubrication for any X or O rings setup..just keeping the ring rubber soft and nimble and isolating the metal plates on each side of the chain protected against road salty water..act as a film to isolate oxygen in air so the metal won't rust. The eo will only lube the needle bearings of normal heavy/standard roller chain link as the oil can get to the needle bearings inside the link. This won't do for O or X rings as the needle bearings are sealed. The important thing for oiling the chain is that so the rubber O or X ring does not get damage by dryness or trapped grits and sand that can crack and break the rubber seal. The O and X rubber ring is to sealed the factory installed greases of the needle bearings in the link from getting out..so to say..nothing gets in..as long as the rubber sealings are not damages. Chain lube etc..all the claims about "pentrating ability"..IMHO is not true..nothing gets pass the seal unless its damage. Aerosol spray chain lube does the same as eo except that its claim for stickiness grip or won't fling much and they does nothing more than just coat the chain plates suface protecting direct contact with water so it won't rust as oxygen would not get mix with the water on the surface metal. Be award though that it has the tendency of accumulating grits and sand dust that cluster up and damage the O and X ring rubber. A coat of Chain wax over the chain lube is an ideal practice..waxs is waxs and its not a lube and i don't work like chain lube.
