[Discussion] Spending money

Most people will complain that their partners/family member/etc. always anyhow spend money on useless stuff e.g. handbags or shoes.

However, most people will also have their own weird spending habits, e.g. weird stuff that they are willing to spend large sums of money on which the people around them (family members, partners, etc.) find incomprehensible e.g. on bikes, watches, etc

For me, I tend to spend money on restoring Japanese machines from the 1980s, my Dad says I am, in his words, "walking backwards" and nobody around me really thinks it is worth it, but frankly speaking, new devices and machines don't really 'push my buttons', they're nice and convenient, but they just don't seem to have that "wow" factor when I look at them and touch them.

I'm also willing to spend money on music, and the equipment I use to play my music cause when something sounds good... wow it sounds good. :p

I'm less willing to spend money on clothes and handphones, i find that since i will be changing handphones every few years, there's no point splashing out big money on one (and anyway i end up not using half the features on the thing and then dropping it in a mud puddle). As for clothes, all that having to mix and match the clothes just gets on my nerves.

What are some of the things that you are willing to spend money on which other people around you consider a waste of money?

And what the things are you not willing to spend money on but somehow everyone comes around and says "why don't you get a better one", etc?

I guess every1 has different opinions about stuff. Some people are more thrifty den others. Some don't mind spending huge sums of money buying/doing what they love.

For me personally, I will not let anyone stop me from getting what I want. Especially if I work hard to earn that money and that gives me every right to spend it the way I want it.

But parents being parents, they will tend to want to advise their children I guess. So yeah don't take it as a negative thing. sometimes they just want to remind you to save up. As long as u urself rmb ur spending habits and don't go overboard, I think its perfectly fine =)

I like to buy kitchen appliances. :D Oven, food processor, mixer etc. I go crazy at CK Tang's kitchen section. Always feel like buying more pots and pans after watching the live demos.

Fortunately, I do use these appliances and not just buy them for show only lah.

I also spend money on clothes - local designer clothes, not those cheap $10 This Fashion clothes. I just like to support local talent.

I read a lot but don't usually buy books. For these, I go to the library to borrow :)

I share the same for this too. But i have not enough $ to spend on restoring it. I admire old machines more than new machines. Its like WOW you dun get to see that bike often do you. And i notice you bike is a legend too. hahaha. I use to own a Honda Super Magna. But i have no choice to sell it off. When im on that bike i feel the eyes looking at the bike makes me feel wonderful hahaha...

As for me i spend more on food and movies. Traveling mabbe can consider also a kinna spendthrift to others. But well i dun gamble so i guess its already very good. Hahaha.

And yes i have the same tot as you. No doubt you find some ppl very thrifty but there are definately SOMETHING that they will be willing to spend something on. Lets say Life Insurance and other insurance. Well can be kinna investment but some ppl just spend too much till they cannot live without a job.

:D i have the same kinna likings as you too. even thou i have all the appliances at home i will still shop for nothing. but i have learn some ways to safe. That is take watever i like first. Then when reaching the counter to pay, slowly minus those that i dun need. Have to really be sure wat is a WANT and a NEED.

One place that i hate going is Home Fix, Ikea, Giant, Courts, Mustafa (the killer). Cos i usually spend alot of time there and i really mean alot of time. 80% of the time picking the likings, then 20% putting back all the wants. End up i usually having only 1 cheap thing at the counter. HAHAHAHHA

my mother had a friend who is like that too, she will buy pots and pans like nobody's business. but in the end she can't finish using them and will give them away to my mother

swiftee urs a hobby, such project does consume lots of ur time n money. But satisfaction is there.

At times I would like to doll up my bike, but can't find the logic to change it as the old stuff still work.

bike is a machine without soul, rider would inject new life and character to this machine

I always thought that Men and Women have different shopping styles.

Men aims for 1 thing and saves $500 for it.

Women aims for $500 to buy the whole Orchard Road home.

I spend about 2k+ on my bicycles already.. and people always say, you not pro then you buy so expensive for what?

Sigh.

it's good not to change it unnecessarily. stock is better, esp in terms of resale.

I spend a lot on cheapo stuff.

Most expensive items I bought recently is for the office, so can still claim. $79 for a A3 laminator.

Others are on food. Tolietries, Perfumes, Cosmetics, Essential oils & some cheapo jewellery.

I hardly buys clothes nowadays, cos I dont really fit into them. And my shoes nowadays are like hardly worn. Gave most of the clothes away already.

Motorcycles, Gaming and guitars...

motorbike:

Am owning two bikes now. Half of my room looks like a garage with spare parts, rims + tyre, suspensions, EO oil bottles etc lying all over the place. I am considering purchasing a kr that has its COE dying soon, play it around and scrap it... but dad is gonna kill me with 3 bikes la.

Gaming:

I have PSP, PSX, PS2, PS3, Wii and a gaming worthy PC. Shelves full of games. My steam account has more games then most of my friends. Lucky I am not into those MMORPG or whatever they are called. Thinking of getting an Xbox360 too >__>..

Guitars:

A kapok acoustic, yamaha acoustic, yamaha classical. There was a point of time when I was owning 5 guitars -_- but sold em off. Am giving the kapok away and maybe let go either the yammie acoustic or classical.. love them both >___

And the funny thing is.. most of those stuff here are bought from my NS pay. And most are 2nd hand. I scouted high and low for those, for example, my PSP3000 cost me $150 onli as oppose to $300+. But it is still alot of $ lah. Now I ord already, getting a job soon. I don't know what I am going to fill in my room next.

i spend money on my biking hobby... i spend on clothes or gadgets only when i really need them. Budget is tight for me now as I need to pay school fee every 6 month. If I really can't afford to repair my bike, then I don't. i watch what i spend on, keeping track of expenses with my iPhone app, setting limit on my expenses every week. Sometimes it becomes an obsession for me on how much i spend each day. I would challenge myself how long i can go without spending a single cent. And if I unintentionally spend too much in a day, like on junk food, i would get upset. haha

mum would always reprimand me and persuade me to sell one of my bikes. hmm... I would tell her, since she can spend money on facial and jewellery to pamper herself, i can spend money to pamper myself too. the way i pamper myself is different from hers, that's all.

yup 2nd hand yields a lot of good bargains :)

i got my aego m at a steal on the internet. outlook sucks, but it works beautifully.

i also obtained a few 2nd hand camera lenses and a film camera foc, fixed them up rather cheaply and they work beautifully now

but must understand what you are buying well la... otherwise might accidently buy defective stuff that is beyond economical repair

i tell my dad that my 2nd bike is for rebuilding purposes (e.g. hobby). he approves of the friends that i work on the bike together with, so that's one good thing, at least im spending my weekends with "good influences", and i will be spending more time not riding the bike then :p

U need suggestions? Can go into hi-fi. Will fill your room+empty your pocket like nobody business

I had the option of getting yet another netbook earlier this year or a pillow.

I decided on the pillow because it's $2 and will last longer than the netbook... which I would end up selling in 6 months due to its uselessness.

Yep, it's the Little Red Pillow ™. Inspired by the book of similar name from Communist China.

Little Red Pillows keep the workplace happy. And they save me over $600 Redpillow.jpg
