Hi all,

 

I heard that if you do not ride your bike frequently there will be some problems with the tires? Like once or twice a week.

 

Is it true? Or will there be some other issues?

Heard stories about it too. For me, i will bring the bike out to malaysia once a week. The longer distance covered and higher RPM is good enough to get the alternator going and charge the battery better.

Heard of the saying "straw breaks the camel's back"?

 

Bikes are pretty tough things, at least in today's safety-oriented whist generally high performance engineering.

 

"High performance" comes at a price - complexity. Big bikes with multiple cylinders and high RPM capability should be revved at least occasionally, otherwise top end lubrication may be lacking. Won't do a Blackbird a favour by riding at 3000rpm. That thing is designed to run, and run fast.

 

If left on a sidestand for extended periods without running, a bike with multiple cylinders may start developing valve issues on the right side cylinder(s) as the oil film protecting those parts drains away leaving them vulnerable to metal-metal contact when the bike is run.

 

Oil also degrades over time, especially when exposed to moisture, condensation etc that's why you should change out the oil after a period of time even though the mileage were minimal.

 

It all has to do with lubrication and whacking the engine may also help keep it free from carbon fouling (rumor). Note whacking doesn't involve 0-10000rpm - you got to warm up the engine before the lubricating oil protects the entire engine, before it can survive abuse. Build the revs gradually and enjoy the full power.

 

Some say that riding "in a way the bike is not designed for" leads to premature overhauls but logically, take a look at the manufacturers' perspective. These are very high revving little rockets designed for X number of RPM. While redlining and constant high temperature abuse will destroy the engine eventually, these engines indeed are meant to be run, not sit still in a garage.

 

Had a fun little kupkia once that I rode full throttle since 2003, since anything below 5000rpm on that bike is a waste of fuel (2 stroke). At year seven, the engine didn't give me any trouble, is as fast as it was when I bought it (perhaps, even faster due to rider familiarity), and ultimately the chassis degraded way faster than the poor little motor running at 6-7k rpm all day.

i realise kalyan is damn knowlegeable regarding bikes man.

 

 

anyway, not riding frequently the most common problem will be a drained battery. thats probably 90 percent of all issues. so even if you do not ride it frequently, take it for a 10km trip or leave the engine running for a few minutes? to charge the alternator once a while.

 

of course, if you leave it in the open, exposed to rain and such, there might be other issues. but thats for anotehr day.

of course what... 2200 posts and teepee ranking....

 

my colleague told me when you ride your bike during rainy season you will encounter more problems because more water gets into your engine and battery.... is this so?

Cheap + fast = no good

I heard about tire cracks you don't ride it for a often.

 

@CSV You mean that if I don't ride it, I can just on the bike for a few minutes also can?

If water can gets into your engine just due to rain, your engine seriously need to throw away liao. :cheeky:

Anyone can ride a bike. Being a biker, is a state of mind.

it happens. fuel tank cap leak. then water goes into your tank, then water is heavier than petrol. so your engine ingests water and dies off. water in engine. common problem for old bikes i think with shady petrol tank cap design.

Oh! i see, I was thinking more of water ingression from the engine's body. Then this is plausible, had complaints from my friend's CBR150 after every heavy downpour. Some lao jiao recommend those road tax vinyl decal for cars, to paste over the fuel cap if your tank's smooth enough.

 

also been told that water seep into the spark plug cap might also be a cause.... but should be fuel tank issue...

If ride like twice per week, should be fine right.

Ok. Thanks everyone for their comments/advices.

 

So it should not be a problem not riding often lah. Just that need whack in once in a while. Tire, oil all those not problems also lah :)
