BTW does anyone here ride with gear without topbox/panniers? How do you carry all the gear around when let's say you go to work?

before i set up my panniers on my Spec III

I'd used to just leave my full face and jacket in my office.

When going out, just put helmet in helmet sling bag and stuff my gloves, head buff etc insude the helmet.

Armour jacket i handcarry.

rain gear squash under my seat in the compartment

This MOTGATT/ATGATT thing got me wondering, would it be more irresponsible to be laxed about safety wear or lax about the safety of your ride i.e. [a bigass dude riding a cub or those mat rempits with sotong tyres. somewhere in those lines.]

unfortunately i dont wear any shin guards.

the problem is they're very bulky and if i wear them under my formal pants or jeans, they'll bunch up.

most of the time i just ride wearing my formal pants or jeans. thinking of upgrading to kevlar jeans but wonder will it be hot or stuffy.

i thought mesh jacket would be hot at first but surprisingly, after riding in them, it's not at all. only when stationary will feel warm, on the move, its pretty cooling actually.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

been thinking of getting kevlar jeans and possibly knee/shin guards

but been putting it off... haiz...

so basically upper body protected, feet protected

in between like toufu -_-''

Question:

other than the regular gear we have been discussing

i've been thinking about lower back protection

reason i am asking is when i did a self slide couple of years back

all the rest of my gear helped me 101%

problem is when i was sliding, my ass hit the kerb and i fractured my tail bone

yeah, i know it's gonna really uncomfortable to have any padding / armour there

and if its a direct impact may not be of any purpose anyhow, but would there be anything we could do to help reduce damage?

i have shin guards, carry them in my top box. I use them when it rains (slippery roads, skids). Must say i felt 'uncool' wearing them the first few times, wonder abt what others wld think. i don't think anyone cares..

i did consider kevlar jeans, but found it to be not very practical. per jeans cost is maybe $300-$400, kind of need a few pairs to be able to wear them all the time. can only wear them for casual rides, not riding to work. and the protection they offer is mostly against abrasion, not impact. knees are prone to both abrasion and impact injury due to the way we fall, possibly more on the impact side actually.

heh, i saw a phantom rider yesterday. rode behind him from traffic light junction to PIE. He really ATGATT; jacket, ff helmet, gloves, boots. and rides safely, without weaving, signal, give way, etc. wah. power!

Which kevlar jeans did you try? I bought a Komine jeans from Motoworld for $180 or so and it came with kevlar overlays around the hip, bum and knee areas, plus it had armour in the knees as well. Incredible value for money. They didn't have stock of it when I last visited two weeks ago and it looks like it's no longer on their website, but they do have an alternative (http://motoworld.com.sg/detail.php?pid=608), pic below.

http://motoworld.com.sg/products/608/large.jpg

The jeans are heavier and hotter than regular jeans, but it gives me real peace of mind about landing hard on my knee in a fall. Alternatives to the jeans are mesh armoured pants and knee armour strapped directly to your knee underneath your regular pants, both of which Motoworld stocks.

As for shin protection, one alternative is to get full height riding boots. For example, when I wear my jeans with my Alpinestars Supertech Rs underneath, there is no gap of armour from my knee down to my feet (i.e. the end of the knee armour just about meets the top of the boot). Wearing a full boot with ankle support also reduces the chances that you'll snap your ankles in a fall.

Added a pair of Caterpillar boots to my inventory of redneck style industrial grade armour protection.

Market price $172

Purchased at $70.

I told the salesperson that I needed it "for work". He swapped the $172 barcode on the shoe for a $70 one and the cashier didn't ask any questions.

Considering my appearance is "like that", I wonder what kind of "work" he thinks I'm doing that requires steel toe boots that are impervious to rain, oil slicks, etc.

The grip on these Cats are seriously phenomenal - rain and slippery painted surfaces are no longer a danger.

Wow, surprised to see that many people wearing gear, never expected... Then again I was thinking about gearing up.

CBR150

Purpose: Commuting

ATT:

1. Helmet (Soon to be full-face)

2. Gloves

3. Shoes

4. Jeans

Looking into getting a full mesh jacket i saw by Knox. But thinking like, where to store it, cuz i think hard to put in box also. Feels funny imagining myself wearing the jacket with all that armor walking around town or neighbourhoods =B... any jacket with padding to recommend that can store in box?

hi,

Glad to see many riders gearing up... Just wondering, no one mentioned anything about rain-gear... :cheeky:

Myself on a normal day would wear riding jacket, but if it rains then I would opt for my rain jacket which has no protection... :(

So what would be good to wear over our riding jackets for the rain?

Just wear your rain coat over your riding jacket.

Thats wat I did (and probably the majority of those with riding jacket) when it rains.

There's the option of buying a waterproof riding jacket, but it doesnt rain everyday, does it. :D

And on days it does not rain, a normal mesh riding jacket is much cooler than a waterproof one (even with all its air inlet slits for non-rainy day) to me.

Storage might be a problem, those with a box should have no problem. But those without a box, like myself :cheeky:, would not want to carry around two jacket...

I agree that those Gortex jacket are too warm for singapore weather... Mesh is the way to go locally. One way for riders like me would be to get the RS Taichi drymaster compact... But I think the price is more then half my riding jacket price... :faint:

Mesh Jacket with CE Level 1 Armour.

Jeans

High cut Shoes

Getting a knee guard this weekend!

Any good and affordable ones to recommend?

where you intending to get from? saw a set at motorworld in lavender. But found that buy online cheaper.

got mine for abt $35-40 online, shop was selling abt $60+,and only 1 choice.

after looking around online, realise that can find more knee guards at places which cater more to motorcross riders.

oh yeah, knee guards also got diff lenghts and bulkiness.
