for me, offroad riding definitely improve my riding skill, know my bike better and able to control in unforseen circumstances.. like gravel on the road or wheels are sliding off on slippery surface.

so does offroad riding makes better rider out of you ? it does for me.

certainly riding off road improved my ability to handle my bike in those situations, especially when traction is limited. having said that, i think riding off road is very different from on road, especially if the bikes ridden are different (e.g. XR4 vs CB400). still, riding off road helped me understand traction a lot better and how to ensure i get that when it matters.

having said that, i think the biggest factor that contributed to my riding was falling. hahaha! if i never fell, i'd never know how to correct my mistakes and stop the falling :p

Sounds like these can be learnt from advance training or something. I can't ride scramblers due to my height deficiency.

that is why i have a scram and a cruiser. really helps in the skill .

Always ride safely and defensively.

Repair bike cheap and fast,

Repair body expensive and slow.

im a street rider, and i have got to agree with this. you're dealing much more with the elements, bumps and jumps, hard soil, gravel, clay, mud and the list goes on. and constantly have to adjust the way you ride and handle your bike. sounds like fun... i wish i could ride an offroad bike too... but im big size round type leh. like bear on a bicycle. aha

Thrash? Don't mind if i do.

each discipline has its own unique skill set, not all offroad riding techniques are transferable to the street. one thing i do agree is, offroad riders do have alot more varying conditions to deal with then street riders.

Found off road more technical and yeah, more things you have to watch out for. Road racing is alot more dangerous though, can't make mistakes here, you can't fall off and pick up the bike again, fall off the bike and its a coin toss with God.

I have to disagree with your statement.

Any form of racing comes with its associated hazards.. be it off road on dirt or on the track.

Every time you crash be it in the dirt or on the track.. its a coin toss with God.

And frankly I tell you.. I ride supermoto.. and I crash more times in the dirt than on the tarmac, so to me... road racing is safer than dirt racing.

This is over generalising, and too simplistic.

Each requires a different skillset. Just to give a few example, on trails, dirt bikers tend to lean out however roadies tend to lean in during a turn. Dirtbikes & SM riders would lose rear wheel traction intentionally but never for roadies. Dirt bikers tend to ride standing but roadies would keep their ass as close to the seat as possible but still putting their weights on the pegs.

As long as you ride, regardless of the type of bike, you will improve your skills over time.

it's good to have best of both worlds.. isint ?

not meant to leg out, counter balance on Expressway exit corner, but you wont panic when rear wheel accidently sliding out...

no need to stand all the way, but at least better control on minor "B" road conditions...

unlike someone i know on STX, cannot stand and balance the bike..
