SBF's IT Proficiency Test (with recognition forum signatures to be given away)

Greetings all,

The IT forum has matured, with all people coming from all walks of life to be helped by others. And even others who assist those that need help in IT.

I have planned something interesting to certify those who are worthy of their knowledge, this is how I will groom them into IT hobbyists in SBF to help me assist the users.

Recognition comes as a badge (in a picture JPG format that you wear on your signature) certifying that you are IT skilled, earning the trust of those who come into ITinerary for help.

Without further ado, I shall launch our first-ever IT Proficiency Test. Here is how I plan to do it. There are 3 stages:

Stage 1

Type: Online pop quiz, delivered to users

Number of questions: 10

Question type: Multiple-choice

Requirements: Anyone from any kind of skill level can participate online here.

Passing grade: TBA

Topics that will be tested:

>> Technology and gadget terminology

>> Standard household techie things

>> "What is this?" questions

>> "What is this for?" tech questions.

>> Questions pertaining on how one uses the computer (like, how do you switch the PC on, etc…)

Stage 2a

Type: Online

Number of questions: TBA

Question type: Multiple-choice & a few "explain in your own words" questions.

Requirements: You have to had taken Stage 1, and received a passing grade

Passing grade: TBA

Topics that will be tested:

>> How to perform this/that after you logged-in to your computer (i.e. Windows XP, Windows 7…)

>> Cables, IT equipment, and how to connect them together.

>> Internet basics

>> Where can you find ___ on the computer?

Stage 2m (Apple/Mac quiz)

Type: Same set-up as Stage 2a

Number of questions: TBA

Question type: Same set-up as Stage 2a

Requirements: You have to had taken Stage 1, and received a passing grade

Passing grade: TBA

Topics that will be tested:

>> Roughly the same topics as what's listed in Stage 2a, but will be tested based on a Macintosh computer.

Participants who pass Stage 2m will earn a small Apple/Mac proficiency badge.

Stage 3

Type: TBA, will probably need to organize a meetup (eg McD) for a paper exam.

Number of questions: TBA.

Question type:

>> 1/4 of the questions: Multiple-choice

>> 1/4 of the questions: Multiple-choice, with more than one possible answer.

>> 1/2 of the questions: "Explain in your own words" questions

Requirements: You have to had taken Stages 1 and 2a, and received a passing grade for Stage 2a. Or, if you passed Stage 2m only, you can attempt Stage 3 just once.

Passing Grade: TBA

Topics that will be tested:

>> Windows OS only

>> When stuff spoils, how to troubleshoot

>> How to activate a feature

>> Software installation

>> Format and/or reinstall the operating system basics

>> Networking basics

** The topics that will be tested in every stage is non-exhaustive; topics of the same stage (skill) level may be modified or added.

Those who pass every stage of the exam will have their user nicks listed on this forum. Definitely a superb way to prove your intelligence in IT.

Folks who go through Stage 3 will be given a completion badge with your nick on it (in a picture JPG format that you wear on your signature) that signifies your expertise in IT, and recognizes the fact that you can give assistance to those who do not know how to use a computer. Based on the questions as well, you will be assessed in the area that you are strong in, and will be reflected in the forum as well.

I will post Stage 1 questions soon, so either (1) subscribe to this thread, or (2) PM me your usernick or email for me to notify you.

Good luck folks :thirsty:

The test will fail one or not? I confident of passing all except for 2m. I dunno how to use apple/mac. Linux Ubuntu/Xubuntu easier. Haha.

Send me! :D

Anyway, just asking. The questions are they like basic questions or are recent ones that are linked to computers today? During my time, OCing was done manually and there was no "auto" function in BIOS like they do now.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

  • 1 month later...
Interesting. This forum has been a great help to me ;)

Glad that you had a great experience in this forums, not to mention many encounters with members that already helped you resolve many IT issues that you had before.

And that is why I will be raising the standard of this forum. It should never always be a one-moderator-show (actually there's 3 of us but anyhoo). It's about many talented specialists wanting to help others.

=======

Somebody PM'ed me on whether the exam questions are hard. I replied as such:

Bro, I've got 3 levels. I also see a lot of enthusiastic faces wanna take also. So here's the deal:

Level 1 - Anybody who loves electronics and knows how to use computers (those savvy ones like listen mp3 burn CDs do word processing) should able to clear this one.

Level 2 and 2m - Those who aren't necessarily working in IT, but they know about computers and IT stuff, and find that they are teaching their families and/or colleagues tech stuff correctly - these group of people should be able to ace this one.

Level 3 - Those who are working in IT (or those who somehow are gifted in it), know their RAM to their ROM, basic handling of hardware, able to pinpoint problems when it arises and find a logical solution to it.

Why I decided to have a certification test is because the IT forums nowadays got a lot of people who are experienced. There are those who are not experienced. So in order to keep the IT forum standard high, I will certify people who are really good in IT and when they wear their forum badges (and maybe stickers and IT Pro badges/keychains in the future), they are immediately trusted as experts and the public will have confidence to confront these people with IT issues.

So you see the reason why Level 3 needs to have a higher standard? But not forgetting those IT savvy Level 1 and "techie guy/gal" level 2 folks too.

Will let you know about this when the certification tests are finalized. Good luck ;)

@redbeacon

I also like to add that there is many fields in the IT world. Networking, Hardware, Software, Apple Product, Google products, Open source, Operating systems, etc. Just to name a few. Some people have depths in certain areas such as apple products while others maybe have breadths in many fields but no depths.

Different areas in the IT field calls for different badges. Apple Expert, Networking Expert, just to name a few examples. :D

Past: RXZ, KR, R1 07

Present : Wave S

Thanks for the feedback.

Perhaps that would be in the future, but it's really better to start off as a basic provider first. We're a general IT forum, and our main focus is to help fellow bikers with computing issues. We're not a fully-fledged IT helpdesk and I don't envision that happening in a grand way, but who knows maybe that will change?

Best regards.
