Is it "too much" to wear a FF helmet, armour jacket and riding boots for BBDC lessons? Can anyone please recommend a good shop(s) to buy these items? Thank you very much.

It never too much. You are welcome to wear those items as you please. However I doubt you can use the full face helmet as they usually require the students to wear open face with visor up or without visor. Don't know why thou. You may consider flip up full face where I see students worn it with the helmet in flipped up position.

If u need to wear riding boots, try to get those low cut one..It will be easier for u to take it off as u will need to wear the knee guards..As for armor jacket, it might be slightly bulky with your shirt plus the reflective number tag that u got to wear..Just my opinion only..

2b basic requirement is jus long sleeve,long pants,covered shoe and glove..helmet can use theirs if u don mind the stink smell...if u kiasu u can get wat u stated above.. but if u are low in cash now.. perhaps u might wanna join ssdc or cdc, i think they will give u elbow and knee guard when u enroll , while bbdc nv ..(not sure if they are still practicing that).

I agree with that sentence, its never too much dude. When accident occurs ur the one that suffers so its better to be safe first. However they wont allow FF inside for some reasons, flipups yes.

Can you recommend some brands for the armour jacket, riding boots and gloves? I am going for the rocker cruiser look and would be using the same gear from Class 2B to Class 2. I am a working professional so have some budget. Nothing super top range but middle range and good. I intend to get the Zeus 3000 series modular helmet. Can you also point me to the shops please? Thank you.

BBDC lessons wear an open face helmet will be more ideal as it will be very hot n stuffy. Best to get a personal elbow & knee guards for hygenie reasons if you wan too.

Wearing a jacket in the circuit is too hard to bear with, you might be uncomfortable and sweating throughout the lesson.

 

Get a gd pair of leather gloves with decent protection will last you for a few yrs of daily usage.

 

Some places to recommend you to drop by and take a look are Chiap Lee Serangoon rd, Motorworld at kaki bukit or lavender St, LAB at kelantan Lane (if you are on a lower budget), JR pte ltd at ubi frontier (if you have ample cash to spare with).

If your lesson is in the afternoon, you will be baked with the start-stop 'traffic' in the circuit with a riding jacket and non flip up FF.

 

Probably you can go with a normal helmet (open or flipup), gloves and a pair of riding boots. Enough for the somewhat controlled circuit/ environment.

I find boots useful and convenient, becos it offers better grip and traction, esp when it rains sometimes during lesson/s.

 

Once you passed, get a better helmet and the riding jacket. And throw away the open face helmet.

 

(For myself, I ride everyday with FF, armoured jacket, gloves and riding boots. I've not touched open face helmets for a long time already cos to me its pointless on the real roads.)

Never ever use the centre's helmet. Man...I dont even know do they ever wash it.

If you want to wear full gear by all means, if maximum safety is your aim. Singapore weather hot and humid all I can say. People will laugh at you I can confirm plus chop. From unpleasant experience, my crap open face has saved me from losing teeth twice but try to wear shoes, long pants and sleeves and gloves.

I have leather jackets, half gloves, full gloves, full face, skull caps and bob helmets, 3 open faced helmets.

Going somewhere far and unfamilliar? Full face , full gloves and leather jacket.

 

Seriously, if you were to gear up like that, you'll be baked under the sun.

 

Gloves are a must for lessons. The padded jacket is an overkill if you ask me because you'd be wearing gloves, elbow and knee guards. Full face will be drenched in sweat and stink as its alot of waiting at lessons without wind. As a newbie, you'd prob do stupid things and drop the helmet alot too.

 

but if youre alright with them, hey, go ahead. its your opinion that matters at the end of the day.

advisable to keep yourself as cool as much as possible....in the driving centre ...pls expect to be drench with sweat towards the end of the session.

 

if you have some biking experience before

 

as for protective gears the centre have some requirement should you bring your own, but if you want to use the centre equidment, one thing for sure- your dog would not want to be near you for the next few weeks.

 

so get to know what the centre recommend and go from there.

 

 

but if you are a complete newbie ,i do advise you to wear a riding jacket for atleast the first few lesson and the ebrake secion, it could help a bit, but as far as newbie concern , anything can happen like when taking corner the rider can be flung from the 5th level and landed 2 storey down. and then wearing a jacket may helps , but i doubt to how much....

 

btw if you are wearing them full protection , you be one of the odd few that ppl will stare at ,just ignore them....

just wear some light colour, breathable, long sleeve top man. as much as safety is a concern, being baked under the sun and sweating and dehydrating is dangerous as it is. you just lose focus and cant concentrate on your lesson. BBDC 2B instructors are good. and no 2nd floors to be flung off from. so rest assure you are safe. its only when you lose focus and you panic, that's when things go abit haywire 2 cents worth

you won't be moving at high speeds while in circuit, at ubi the speed limit was 30km/h. not really advisable to wear jacket and full face, it'll be too hot and stuffy. really baking in the sun. long sleeves, long pants, proper shoes (riding boots is good), but if not, then covered shoes. you'll be required to wear elbow and knee guards, and gloves.

 

and they don't allow full face or visor down because they want to see your eye, whether got check this and that.

my 2 cts.. as all said, its up to u wat gear u wanna wear. I used to wear Flipup for my class2a b4. I dont think its a big deal. But most of the time, it will be flipped up, cos u spend alot of time waiting for your time in the circuit. hence, honestly, I also prefer open face for the class.

 

Since you got some budget, my suggestion is, u get better open face helmet. Better in terms of cushion, weight, material, and air vent. They gotta be PSB approved too. Anyway, you could use them for future too, so might as well get it now.

 

for budget and stuffs, here's my notes for the gear.

 

Flip up: u can get from Regina.

Cheaper = Zeus, Rjays ($100+)

mid range = Nolan N103, Caberg Konda ($200-300)

High end = Shoei Multitec ($550 +)

Uber range = Schuberth C3 only at Chiap Lee ($850)

 

Open Face:

Cheaper = MHR, Zeus. ($50 - $100)

Mid Range = OGK, HJC, AGV, Nolan ($200 - $300++)

High End = Shoei, Arai ($500 and above)

Nolan and AGV have half cap, PSB approved. Will be very cooling, and probably good for your future cruiser.

 

Jacket: Chong Aik have some cheap one. Around 120. It's good enough, and it is full mesh. Full mesh jackets are very cooling, and you wouldn't feel that much heat as perceived by many.

Regina's and Motoworld, are around $180 and above. Personally, the difference is just aesthetic. They serve the same purpose, and get torn will the purpose is served.

GR (dainese), $400 and above.

 

Gloves: Don't really need full leather. You can get mesh gloves with leather at contact points. They will do, and easily machine washable. Get knuckle gloves at the very least.

 

Riding shoes - 3/4 cuts will do. I will wear riding shoes will learning, cos I don't want to damage my shoes. Riding shoes have added protection at the gear lever area, and that's very helpful. ^^

Check out Regina for Puma, Alphinestars and Sidi, and Motoworld for RS Taichi one. Price range, around $200 and above.

 

Having all these gears can last you all the way, and definitely very usable when u ride. Some people don't wear alot of gears when riding, some do. It's up to individual.

Bbdc dont allow FF for 2B learners as far as I know. Those seen wearing FF are 2a and 2 learners ah. Usually what some will do is normal decent half face helmets for learning. Once passed, they switch to full face and the half face will be used for pillions

as much as i advocate all the gear all the time, its not possible during BBDC because you spend a bit of time waiting as well, and the speeds are generally slow, so you will feel quite stuffy.

 

dont have to worry though, because traffic withnin bbdc more or less controlled, so no need to be too afraid of falling or crashing.

 

once you got your license though, get yourself a nice set of gear to protect yourself.

i second that! i just passed my 2b too, and i'm shod in a FF helmet, riding jacket with protectors, gloves with knuckle protectors and a pair of riding shoes.

riding at night with these are ok, but in the afternoon soon, i'm like a baked rice. It's really very uncomfortable when i stop at junctions. Plus, i get weird stares too! given the way i dress, and with a P-plate on my bike. But heck! i'd rather my skin stay on me rather than on the asphalt.

pple can call me a poser but it's me riding my bike, and i'd like to reach my destination with a smug look and that i've conquered the journey. on a side note, i seem to be able to ride more relaxed knowing that i'm geared up..

 

i read somewhere: if it's too hot to dress up, then it's too hot to ride.

 

to TS: it's commendable to want to dress up for the occasion, but i reckon you should try on those gear at one go (at some shops) and walk around the shop to give yourself a rough feel on donning them. =)

Don't get the misconception that with full gear you're completely safe, it is still no substitute for safe riding and if bopian, defensive riding.
