My suggestion for my parents was simple, you buy car, I take class 3, if not, I'm sticking to bikes, burn my bike, I report police. My paid for class 3 was half way done, didn't complete it, didn't have the will to, found driving very boring. Paid for my bike license, paid half for my first bike downpayment then settled the debt afterwards, installment all I pay.

6 months after I passed, had 2 major accidents, spent around 2K for repairs from my pocket, enough to settle the rest of my installments in repairs, for mods and maintenance, not sure, no point counting. Funny thing was the accidents were all when I was riding very the relaxed.

my case, my dad ever commented after he saw a bloke doing a very nice lean over a bend (not those 90 deg corners)

dad: wa, like that also can ah? so dangerous. if die also no one will pity

me (sitting in the passenger seat): ya lor, so dangerous, dunno why he wanna ride until like that

dad: that's why i will never allow you to take motor, even though you sold your car already

me: no la! of course i wont take motor

dad: if i ever find out you take motor, i'll take your helmet and smash both your kneecaps till you cannot change gear and press rear brake!

me: orh.

While he was talking to me all these while, my mind is on my bike which is parked at my house basement carpark, longing to go for a joy ride, plus my wife was constantly kicking the back of my seat through the conversation!

well, i'll definitely have to break the news to them, but next june, when i'll ride to their home in a Super 4, at least tell them i;ve been riding for a year plus liao..

i felt that it's only right to obtain their blessings, like that can ride with a more peaceful mind.. they should understand by now: cuz i'm friggin' 30!

i still am trying to imagine how they would react when they see my wife and I home with a motorcycle! hyuk hyuk

then again, i thought the way the dude in the GSX took the bend, damn sedap!

Simple. Dad object? Ask your mom. :D

I'm the only child/son. When I told my dad that I wanted to learn biking, he object furiously. Probably because he used to be a rider too. Then I told my mom, who then reasoned with my dad that sit at home also can get bang by aeroplane, "let the boy enjoy his life". :)

I guess I was very lucky, my dad ended up paying for my bike lessons and for my first bike. I also went to take class 3 about 1 year after my 2B.

7 years down the road, and my dad drools at what I currently ride. :p

Hi guys, first i would like to introduce myself.

I recently just really get into bikes suddenly, dont know why (maybe because of my friends having bike transport etc.)

I am still studying thou, and still pursuing into getting 2b..

Now i have a question to all of you out there, does your parents nag at you or scream at you when you wanna take a bike license? Yea mine does..

Reason why i want to ask you guys is because i want to see what you actually "argue" back. In a proper way. No violence.

This conversation happen to me between me and my father. (no i not those kind of boys that fist fight with parents lol)

Me: i want go get bike license.

Father: (give angry face in 0.01seconds) WHAT? I SAY NO BEFORE ALREADY RIGHT, YOU ASK ALL YOUR AUNTIE AND UNCLE SEE OF ALL OF THEM GO AGAINST IT.

Me: It is cheap and really very good transport for me

Father: (when long lecture comes. i still remember.) DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS RIDING A BIKE? CAR BANG YOU NOW YOU BANG CAR, YOU KNOW WHAT IS THE MEANING OF SWAY OR NOT? SEE THOSE OTHER BIKE UNDER THOSE HUGE TRUCKS? THE BIKE DONT PROTECT YOU. AND YOU BETTER LISTEN, YOU ARE ONLY MY F*CKING SON, YOU DONT KNOW HOW I FEEL.

Me: (diam diam lor lose liao)

Now current situation is.. I did not mention that i will ownself pay in the future. I already enroll myself at CDC already, working part time also.. maybe my father was thinking that i would want him to pay for me a bike and license.

Tell me how should i tell my parents when i got my 2b license or when i want to buy a bike. And i will tell you how i always got argued back..

Just go and take your 2B and buy your bike. but.

USE YOUR OWN MONEY.

So if anything happen to you. They can't feel guilty **** why i give him/her money to ride bike.

Posted

my parents objected violently. but still i went on to take my license and i got a bike.. all with my own funds.

then over the years, i worked hard, and planned my finances wisely and manage to upgrade. but clearly parents are really uncool with the upgrades.. and i told them that, bigger bikes are purpose built, and it is more stable and safer than smaller bikes. and as the years goes by, rider gets seasoned and ability to ride safely is there and they are cool with the idea.

but of course when i got home with a cl2 bike, they are also v unhappy, but of course when they are unhappy dont go and reason out or talk cock with them, let then cool down first before talking or engage into negotiation with them... in the end till today my parents are now getting ok with it... and one of the reason is told them is...

"I am gg to be 21 to 25 for this period of time only, probably when i am stable, i will get a car.. and i WILL live to the day that i buy my first car.."

yeap.. and i also ride safely la. i dont do sense-less tailgating... i do things that i deem and judge is safe at that moment. and, make sure u get into no accidents.. i am also the only son in the family.

There is no replacement for displacement, except for Ah Seng

Hmmm. I realized that most parents who object to their son/daughter riding are usually plain drivers without a bike license OR experienced a bad bike accident before (Correct me if I'm wrong). I say this simply because my mom who drives only, nags the crap out of me all the time. But my dad (who rode before) encourages me to get a bigger bike most of the time. lol

Both major to the bike, both I fly, just minor scratches, no worse then when you fall off rollerblading. If can counter won't accident already mah.

First one because I cornered half asleep, went in too fast on a tight corner, leaned more then back wobbled because monoshock quite weak already, didn't know what to do so I went up mid corner and langgar kerb.

Second one was in heavy rain, I jam braked and front wheel locked and slipped on shoulder marking at 70 to 80km/h, I went sliding till I'm 2-3 cm away beside a stationary truck, bike went under and was totalled, lorry no damage.

Taught me expensive and valuable lessons.

Hmm, maybe I'm lucky. I never had any issues with my parents even though I am the only son. They said okay when I told them I wish to take a bike license when I turn 18. All of my relatives were shocked at that fact and some even chide my mum for doing so, which I dislike a lot.

My mum encouraged me to check out if I could take BTT and RTT before 18 and she even bought me my 1st bike, a Phantom TA200. Though now she worries about me every time I ride and she expressed her opinion that she do not wish for me to upgrade to class 2, afraid that I might become reckless with that amount of power.

Fortunately for me, 5 years of riding and not even a single demerit point and 2 minor accidents (involving a Merc which rear-ended me and a taxi which side-swept me, both which I claimed damages and won).

Hmm, parents and riding. I do believe that most people with approval from their parents, will ride safely as their parents will give advice and tips. I don't advocate taking the license behind their backs or getting into a huge row because of it, most of my friends did and sometimes, things turn ugly.

Well, eventually there is a need to reason out with them. Not seeking an argument and throwing temper, that will just lower their opinion of you as well as confidence. Even if they get mad and started shouting, it will do you well to remain calm and explain to them. That difference, will definitely get you noticed as parents will consider why aren't you shouting or throwing your temper.

Talk rather than shout. Understand rather than forced upon. Ask instead of demand. As your elders and caretakers, they do have the right to advice you accordingly so, there is a responsibility for you to answer to them. It may take some time but eventually they will relent in their own ways. Most parents love their children and will protect them in their own fashion, so it is up to you to inform them and show that you are matured enough to handle yourself in school, in life and definitely on the road. Assure them of your ways and seek their input in how to improve upon it

True that some parents are insufficiently educated but they have a wealth of experiences garnered from their years of living so in either case, they will definitely bring some insights on how to keep yourself safe on the road. Make them your allies, not your enemies.

I'm a Tutor! Proud to be one!

Just do it.

Fighting or arguing over what's just a mode of transportation is just frakking stupid.

Listening to nagging fearmongers never got me anywhere....

Fear and paranoia has its place, so does being daring. Depends on situation, in some places, being too scared can get you in trouble.

Like someone said, the bike is just a mode of transport...not to everyone though heehee.

Ride within your limits.

I know how you feel, exact same situation.

first, you gotta understand his POV. you're his only son. if he were to lose you in an accident, trust me, it will hurt him much more than it hurts you. It's natural for parents to nag, even after 10-20 years. all parents nag.

second, biking is dangerous, it is a fact. what you should do first is to brush up on safety riding, stories of other bikers, experiences.

third, demonstrate to your parents you are responsible and safety oriented. Tell them nicely, debate with them, calm your old man down. Idea is to exchange the views and let him know you are responsible (that is if you really are responsible and safety oriented)

he comes from the previous generation where bike technology is not advanced yet, now we have gear like jacket glove and full face. let him know it doesnt save you in the event of serious accident but can minimise damage.

I would rather you tell your old man you are getting it, than go behind his back. For a parent to receive news his kid is involve in accident without him knowing he was riding......thats a pain no one can understand.

now i'll tell you my story. Same like you, poisoned by bikes. parents were super against bikes, typical argument, flesh cover metal. which is true.

but i didn't care, bike was the 1st thing in my 21 years of life that i cared for truly, the only thing that sets me free. So i went ahead and got 2b without them knowing. then one fine day, i appeared back home with my FF and my father saw it.

Long story short, big argument, lots of drama, cold war etc. Eventually, he was used to it and accepted the fact that his son is a biker (which is quite surprising considering i used to be mummy's boy, do whatever i'm told.) but in between those periods, alot of stress and emotional strain.

if it's something that you really like and makes you happy, i don't believe they will stop you from doing it.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)
