This has been something going on for so long. Many times, when bikers get over charged, worst still, charged for something that they don't even ask for.

Example, you repair your bike at Shop A, ask to change spark plug. Went for coffee and came back, the mech tells you, i changed engine oil and wash carb for you too cause must do together. Then you've to pay an extra when you don't even ask for the service.

I find that most bikers seems to pay this amount of "overcharged" items or services. Althought not happy, many don't seem to complain to CASE but grumble.

Is it because 1) there's no standard law to control this? 2) Is it because your bike in the bike shop, don't pay them? They take away the parts replace and you've to tow your bike away to another shop + pay them the workmanship fee?

Its about time CASE do up a list to blacklist these kind of shops that's out to cheat bikers.

Comments anyone?

Another thing i noticed. Sometimes, when bikes are bought at motorshop, they claim that the bike "free from problems". After you buy, start riding, the bike starts break down and they start charging you for the repairs which can amount to a few hundreds of dollars in some cases.

my opinion is this 'overcharge' for things not asked for is precisely what CASE is for. just bring it up to them. it IS a 'standard law', just that it covers all services in general, not just bike issues.

but CASE wont be able to make a blacklist because they cover each and every kind of retail outlet, and if they start doing that for mechs then they shd also start for every other kind of shop and before long u'll have such a dam long list that it will be practically useless, not to mention the resources they need.

as for the second post, it is all a matter of whether u have warranty with ur purchase or not. if u have, then u shd not get charged (provided its not due to negligence on ur part). if u dont, then too bad. thats how things are. at most, u can ride to CASE asking to make it compulsory for shops to provide 6 months warranty. but consider that this move will push the prices of bikes up. this issue is not limited to bikes, its how the world is like. u cant win them all.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

jus had a recent experience bout tis kind of thing. to cut the story short, the mech wanted to charge me for an additional carb svc ($80+) n wanted to change my batt which i later find out tht it wasn't spolit at all (thnx to ah cheong from planet motors). so the mech in the end demanded i pay for the carb svc but i said i won't pay since u nvr inform me at all, agrue here n there so i jus told him "uncle, u know i can report to as a cheating case or not?", he give me tht black face n jus let me off without paying for the additional stuff

Uhm...

...and when they give you their list of what they need to (and also needn't to) repair, they probably ask you to pay more.

My dad's Wave125 broke down somewhere along Changi Road and he pushed it to the nearest motorshop, some shop located just down the road from Darulaman Mosque, towards Geylang Serai.

The mechanic/proprietor said he could fix it within a day, and when we returned there the next morning, the bike showed NO BLOODY SIGNS of having been opened or repaired. He just claimed it was repaired and working fine. When we tried to start the bike, it still wouldn't budge, and then the proprietor claimed he needed another day.

He took out some old parts and said these were from the bike, and said he changed the carb to a 2nd-hand one. Bullsh1t. He made us pay freakin $135 for the repairs to a Wave125? What the heck did he do? Replace the piston?

We started the bike (with much difficulty) and sent it to JB for repairs. The mechanic there got it working fine and the repair bill came up to... wow... so expensive... RM20 ONLY KNNBCCB

I'll post the address and name of this bl00dy bike shop that cheated us... hopefully everyone will boycott the bl00dy ah-pek and he will go out of business...

dear bikers

i notice my brother know how to service bike, he just doing

ir for himself

would appre your kind advice any shop looking for full term mechanic

or is it a good ideal to set up a repair bike shop, but he will be only

alone, he has this idea but he mentioned shortage of man power and

how to get sparepart etc

in that case, only service & repair, not buy/sell, perhaps this enable to

provide better service?

pls to hear or pm us if there is any proposal, thks

The best tool to prevent yourself from getting cheated, is knowledge.

Do a little research on your bike and observe what the mechanic is doing and not follow his advice to go for lunch and come back later. That is like leaving your sick semi-concious wife with a total stranger and going for lunch.

Then, armed with that knowledge, at least you wont get bull-shitted by the mechanic.

There are many stories about washing carbs must change float needle on 1 yr old super 4, change spark plug must change engine oil, change battery MUST change rectifier, etc etc. These words get spread to the newbies and soon, it becomes a norm for mechanics to do so.

But whether anything is changed or not, how would you know? Especially when you're having lunch with your bike in the safe hands of the mechanic?

(Not saying all mechaincs are so. There are many honest shops out there, but the few bad eggs spoil the whole market. Only leave your bike with a mechanic you know you can trust.)

Even if they are not SBF forumers, I'm sure they would know some biker friends and make enquiries on the servicing of their bikes. If you are a greenhorn and don't make enquiries before going to the bikeshop, then you are just like a carrot waiting to get chopped...

I tink the best thing to do is to stay with yr bike while the mech is doing the servicing.....at least you know wat he do and wat he didn't do....and always stay with a mech if u find that he's ok......the rapport will be built and then he will service yr bike properly....
